@sophiasnuggles Please take Maria Louise Cruz's (aka Sacheen Littlefeather) picture down. As someone who IS of native American heritage, it is a disgrace and a slap in the face. She fabricated the whole thing, as testified by her family and others (including a Navajo journalist/activist). Yes, she did a lot of work as an activist for indigenous peoples, but she should have done so as Maria Cruz.
The attached picture is of my great, great grandmother.

On behalf of my ancestors, I would like to publicly apologize to any Native Americans who might be here on the board.
Living near a reservation for the past few years and seeing you rep your tribes has been very touching.

Never talked to one myself except long distance though I did "hunt" them with a camera back in the 80s, or to the black bears native to my home state, though me and the family German Shepherd and later my terrier-husky mix howled with the coyotes a lot when I was growing up. I used to look forward to it as the highlight of my day.
I have to agree with @jimmylee—people like Littlefield and Elizabeth Warren are no better than people who engage in stolen valor with false military claims. I bet at @sophiasnuggles judt didn’t know, but it is true, Littlefeather is not found on any tribal ledgers.
@SunsetSnuggles Such sweet words. I do not believe you, or anyone alive, needs to apologize for your ancestors (though I appreciate the sentiment behind it). We should not be expected, nor are we able, to pay for the sins of our fathers. What you do give, a heart that sees even the pain inflicted now, is stirring. There is still much healing and changes that needs to occur.
@HarleyGirlKate I "shoot" animals with my camera, as well. My boyfriend and I are the only vegans in an area entirely populated by hunters and cattle ranchers. 🤭 Thankfully, they have all been wonderfully polite in regards to our lifestyle.
I've not seen coyotes here, but as for the grizzly thing...three adults (a mama and her very grown "cubs") walked right by the door to one of my boyfriend's work locations, last summer. 😬
@jimmylee There is certainly nothing we can do about the actions of others who came long ago, but it still makes my soul shake, even as someone who grew up watching countless John Wayne movies with my grandma.

@gem7 Yes, I have told my students the same thing. That said, it's more like me sending a picture to my buddy of my "new truck." Sure, it's a used truck, but it's new to me. It was the "New World" in that it was unknown to the Europeans at that time.

I agree with your comment about keeping the two “sides” of this issue in their own threads to cut down on unproductive arguments. FWIW - What you posted above was true at the time you posted it but the “neutral zone” has since been violated with people who prefer this thread posting on the other one.
Questioning whether we should still celebrate Columbus Day, (given, you know, the genocide) seems appropriate on a “Columbus Day” thread.
But coming on a thread celebrating Indigenous Peoples to say, “Happy Columbus Day,” indicates remarkable insensitivity.
Celebrating Columbus Day vs Indigenous People’s Day is a polarizing topic. A moderator made a decision (that I support) to keep the two sides apart in their own threads rather than having them starting arguments with each other.
As someone who frequently complains about the tone of the discourse on the forums, I would have expected you to support @JoyfulHeart and his approach. It seems hypocritical and disingenuous to complain about all the arguing on the forums AND supporting just one side poking the other side on this issue.
