I recall back in the 5th grade, growing up on Long Island, NY, we had "International Day" where all the students talked about some culture (usually connected with their family) and brought food to share for lunch that reflected that culture. One of my favorite days of 5th grade.

@justwanthugs celebrating Columbus in 1792 in the U.S. makes a lot of sense. In the years following the American Revolution the young nation struggled with identity. They wanted to stop honoring the King and British royalty. Columbus having little to do with the English was appealing to the new Americans.
I forgot today was a holiday until I tried to call adult protective services to report neglect of a patient.
Today did feel like a holiday at work since most of our clients ts were closed.
I happened to be in Genoa in the summer of 1992 (unrelated to the observance). Parades and banners ornately decorated with "500" marching down the winding, hillside streets.
@ShaneSchrute i know that’s a popular opinion to hold today, but the DNA study was not determinate as to origin. Only that his DNA was “compatible” with a Jewish origin. There is no proof he was from Spain, only from a general region.

Sooooooo Colombus originally thought he discovered another part of the east lands but it was Amerigo Vespucci who discovered it was an entirely different continent. Which is why we’re called Americans… it comes from Amerigo…. But being a Vespuccian would’ve been rad. Alas… maybe another lifetime 😞
