You asked why. You won't like it but the reason is there are going to be people who do not value you or your time. Now why is this... Because cuddling is not seen as a valid/proper profession/service to them. Therefore it is acceptable to waste your time without recompense.
What can you do? If you feel you can vet through them better, take those steps. If you feel you are doing everything you can, consider taking deposits in advance, the time wasters will wither fast when they know funds have to leave their account in advance. You may lose genuine clients who don't like to pay deposits but hey nothing is perfect.
