I didn't know who Arlo was until I saw him in concert circa 2005. He sang this among other things. Unforgettable. While I think his views of the draft are still funny to a generation that's never experienced it, I hope his view of vets has matured.

  • It is truly a Thanksgiving song for so many.
I've almost memorized this song by listening to it over the last few decades. haha!
I can almost say-along the entire song.
A friend recently asked me this question, about something TOTALLY unrelated. He said: "What did you get?" and for some reason, I replied, "I didn't get nothin'. I had to pay 50 bucks and pick up the garbage." HAHA!
    He said, WTF?
    He didn't get the reference.
It really takes someone special to get that reference.

  • I didn't even know Thanksgiving had a song ...

  • The most quotable part for me these days is "Let me tell you about the town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts" being as how that's where I live. It's grown a bit since then, though.

I was in Stockbridge recently. Stopped by Norman Rockwell’s and Officer Obie’s graves. They’re right across the road from one another.

  • @SonoraSam DId you stop at the Norman Rockwell museum too?

@IronLemon I did. I saw the MAD Magazine exhibit, though I’ve been to the museum before too.

  • I have a friend who hasn't been there yet. Clearly I have to drag him there soon.

Alice Brock, the woman who inspired Arlo Guthrie's Thanksgiving classic "Alice's Restaurant," has died, Guthrie confirmed on Friday.

  • I didn't know about this one growing up, but I've made it a personal Thanksgiving tradition in recent years. Coincidentally, "The City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie was my first favorite song that I can remember, when I was a very small boy.

  • I remember a high school music exchange with the regional school district (GBHS) and a few of us were housed at a house across from the church that was the commune. The grandfather who lived there had mentioned it, and only because I had seen the movie in the art house theater in town the year before was I familiar with the story. A couple of us thought it was cool, we made an apple bowl and sparked one up while we took a walk along the grounds..

  • My dad used to play this!
