So I clung to my IPhone 8 Plus forever because I loved the phone and its simplicity, efficiency, and the enjoyment it gave me. A few months ago Apple announced they would no longer support it and within the week the phone slowed, bugged, and it was obvious that Apple was forcing my hand.

So I got the new 16 with Apple Intelligence (basically their first foray into AI) and I really dislike it so far. I know it’s first gen and there will be things to iron out but so far the phone makes it feel as if the AI is running the phone and not me. I feel like it is working against me and not with me. And if you thought autocorrect was annoying, the AI autocorrect is downright obnoxious. I might write 100 words, look back at it, and realize 20 words were changed that make the message unintelligible.

Those who have the 16–what are your impressions? This phone is making me feel like I am having a “get off my lawn” moment as I wax nostalgic over my 8 Plus.

    Apple Intelligence is really bad. I’m annoyed by the way it tries to sum up and reword multiple notifications. If someone sends me 3 texts it tries to summarize them into one notification. And it does not understand life or people or communication.

    Apple Intelligence is no where near is good as ChatGPT. Use the voice features in ChatGPT and ask it the same questions you ask to Apple Intelligence. You can see how useless Apple’s AI is.

    @ShaneSchrute Thank you. That makes me feel better that I am not being a progress resistant old guy. The performance of the AI is severely lacking and I can’t believe that Apple thought it sufficient enough to sell to their long time customers.

    I hope this isn’t a dumb question but with the iPhone 16, can you bypass the AI features or not install upgrades? I have the 13 and I don’t know how long I can keep this because I don’t really want to upgrade.
    Autocorrect is bad enough with the 13. Apple “intelligence” is a misnomer because it’s not.

    Some tings you can turn off but AI is baked into other operations whether you like it or not.

    I will say that Face ID has come a long ways. You just need to glance at the phone and it is instantaneous and seamless.

    I chuckle because even as I pay it a compliment the phone changed everything.

    I find it interesting that from your perspective apple broke your functional phone and you rewarded them buy giving them money.

    Anyways I've only used three smart phones but I've disliked them all. Apple, samsung, and LG. Both apple and samsung have problems with the idea of consent and LG just designed their phones poorly hardware wise. My LG phone cooked itself to death I am pretty sure.

    My current awful samsung phone changed some terms of service and the page has an agree button but no disagree button. You can dismiss it but it pops up like once a week to try to get you to mistakenly pocket agree. At least I can use it like an external hard drive instead of apple's hideous insanity.

    And yes autoincorrect is awful. It will take something you type like automovile and change it to rabbit. It goes from something simple to figure out to random gibberish.

    I don't think I would buy another expensive phone. If a phone is going to be trash it needs to be cheap and that's what I will be getting when my current one dies.

    Just FYI when comparing Apple Intelligence to ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence is built in partnership with OpenAI.

    Apple Intelligence was announced prematurely because they need to satisfy the shareholders and so on when it comes to AI game. It should be on par with ChatGPT’s latest models this time around next year.

    @JasonCuddles They didn’t break the phone, they stopped supporting it which means no more bug fixes, patches etc. I need the phone because when I travel—which is 32 weeks of the year—the phone becomes my de facto office. I already have an iPhone 14 and I still preferred the 8. But I need efficiency so when the 8 started glitching and running slow, even with a new battery, I needed to change.

    If this was just a thing to enhance my life then no, I wouldn’t buy it. But I also had an Android and despised it. I will live with the 16 but fixes better be forthcoming.

    Wow. Thanks for sharing @TheFunCartel . My iPhone is on its last legs. And as others have shared autocorrect is bad enough. Having it mess with me as an “ai” would drive me batty.

    Software as service is basically an excuse/scam to rush products out to funded beta testing. That is, the consumers.

    Every update causes numerous problems, and even removes features I used or liked sometimes. I’ve seen able to delay them from updating (until after a notice comes out correcting the newly introduced bugs) but not avoid them. That has reduced the difficulties, but it’s still an irritant.

    @g_w_t_w I’m not sure if this is still the case, but when it was first released you had to apply for Apple Intelligence. It wasn’t just on your phone. That’s because they didn’t want to overwhelm the servers. From my experience the servers aren’t doing much of anything. :)

    @CuddlerDunedain I just love decisions like this. I hope the shareholders are satisfied by garbage and coming in last. :)

    Those who have the 16–what are your impressions?

    I upgraded my iPhone 13 Pro Max for a 16 Pro Max.
    I use AI every day in my work and I was really looking forward to Apple Intelligence but so far it has been disappointing. I’ve turned a lot of it off in the settings (the pieces that they let you turn off).

    There are a few features I like related to photos and searching emails but I do not want it “helping” me write.
