Solitary Solstice! Anyone else the same?

edited December 2024 in General

I didn’t grow up with Christmas because I grew up in a christian evangelical cult that didn’t believe in it. So I can’t relate with the Holiday cheer and typically spend it alone. I am finding that I prefer to spend the holiday alone. Anyone soending the jolidays alone? What are you doing this Christmas ☺️

@IronLemon 🥳 i like to rewatch nightmare before Christmas

  • @theCuddleDrgn My annual tradition is watching Hogfather with friends. Especially friends who have never seen it before.

  • @IronLemon i have never herd of that movie 😭🥲

  • @theCuddleDrgn It's a fantasy satire of Christmas, with heavy philosophical overtones. Or maybe it's the other way around. It's based on the book of the same name, part of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I highly recommend it.

  • I usually spend holidays alone because my children want to be with their mothers when they do whatever they do for holidays. I don't get into that so they know me so everyone is happy. Wel except me because I'd rather have them with me all the time but you know mom wants them.

  • I'm with family this Christmas as I usually am, but I've had a quite a few Christmasses on my own. None of these have been miserable occasions, in fact several of them have been very happy. In most cases there was at least a degree of choice on my part, which did help.

When on my own and able to do so, I celebrate the day fully as if with other people. I always have a real tree anyway, and do pretty much all of the rest as per my family's habits and traditions. A turkey is a little too much for one, I find, so I have partidge or pheasant or something instead. Videocall with family, sometimes phone or text with friends. You really can have a party with just yourself: balloons, lovely food, music, dancing, just a little too much to drink .... followed the next day by a hangover and a grim quantity of clearing up.

If you're facing Christmas on your own and you are not too thrilled about it, a useful tip is to tell absolutely everybody you meet, starting in November. Every acquaintance, every work colleague, the works: don't pretend to be happy about it, but keep the tone positive. The chances of this producing either an invitation (which you are not obliged to accept) or a small band of singletons like you to celebrate with is surprisingly high.

  • @CuddleDuncan i love hearing about your plans whether spending them alone or with family.

I agree, the chances of invitations are really high when you mention that you don’t have plans early on. I used to spend Christmas with other families, but it always felt empty, so I prefer to celebrate my day off the way I want too. When I tried celebrating with other people, I always get a pity gift, and its always a candle. Very cringe for me. I would rather have nothing than a pity gift. I personally wanted to share my relationship to the holiday because I wanted to remind people that they are not alone, and they can still make the day special for themselves. Sometimes hearing about someone else’s a experiences with the holiday can be helpful. This time of year is not always the happiest for everyone.

  • @ReltvlyCanshes thank you for being vulnerable again. Are there other ways to try to celebrate?

  • lovely...
no kids no family no headache..
    plenty of chocs and booze

    peace and quiet is priceless

  • I just picked something to binge. So that's what I'll be doing the rest of the night

I have my daughter for half of Christmas Day and then she is gone until New Years' Day, which neither of us is happy about. Just the way the calendar worked out this year.

@ReltvlyCanshes Which streaming platform? I don’t have any, but it would be nice to know for anyone else lmfao

  • I'm watching on AMC through Amazon Prime

  • I'm in the middle of a Babylon 5 rewatch.

  • I'm spending the holidays alone but don't mind the company of others. At a minimum I believe the holidays are a time to celebrate life..even if alone
A movie I enjoy every year is it's a wonderful life
.it's labeled as an xmas movie bit it's really a celebration of life
    .family..and friends..the core messages are solid......,have a great night

  • That's unfortunate. I didn't grow up in a christian household, actually quite different but we (the kids) still celebrated the non religious parts of christmas. Just a fun time that most of the family is off of work so we get together, do the christmas tree thing and handout presents.

Household was fairly religious though, but as us kids grew up we started to step away from it for the most part, although we do still hold on to the core principles (which hardcore religious people often ignore lol).

  • Wish I had people to hang out with tomorrow. I'll probably just play games.

  • Sometimes plans sneak up on you. Tomorrow I'm getting together with a few people from the local trans group. A lot better for me than staying home alone.

  • I'm in the middle of a Babylon 5 rewatch.

    @IronLemon You can't beat that ... 😄

Gonna attend AA and bought some food that is not part of meal prep. I usually travel but getting back from Hawaii and getting ready for the next race is my focus. Lost my mom early September this year so no tree in solidarity. Peace is priceless and I'm okay with that.
