More and more people are dismissive of traditional values and it's sad given the value some could bring in divisive times. I just watched "it's wonderful life for the hundredth time, my appx age, and always take away a new life affirming message everytime. I am not to proud to say the movie always brings tears because of it's life affirming. messages. Its not really an xmas movie but the background is a perfect setting.I wish there more .movies like it. Merry xmas everyone!

    I made a reference to “It’s a Wonderful Life” in the Merry Christmas thread this morning (I quoted the inscription Clarence wrote to George).

    I am with you about the incredible message contained in that movie. It is 78 years old and it is aging like fine wine. When it first came out, right after WWII, it was not a financial success and the reviews were not very positive. That probably had a lot to do with the mood of the nation following WWII. But over the decades it’s message has become much more appreciated.

    Today I heard an old recording of a Paul Harvey, “the rest of the story” broadcast about the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

    The movie today consistently ranks in the top ten movies of all time in many different movie industry publications. However, when the story was first written, the author could not find a publisher (book or magazine) who would publish it. He then tried selling it to movie studios where it was repeatedly rejected. Finally a studio bought the rights to the story and made the movie.

    It barely broke even when it was released in 1946 and didn’t really start becoming popular until the 1970s when the company that owned the copyright to the movie forgot to renew it and the movie became public domain. TV stations started playing the movie heavily because it was free content they could play over and over through out the holidays.

    The “mistake” of not paying a $4 fee to renew the copyright turned a 30 year old, essentially forgotten movie into one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time.

    The answer is no because it's simply fact lookkķ all around us there are simply 100s of examples.........I have no desire to argue during the holidays or for that matter...the intent of the post was to watch the movie..if you can't find one positive away..then i feel sorry for you

    @dennis22554 I have to agree that yes, it is a wonderful movie, yes, it has so many positive messages, and yes, it does showcase positive traditional values.

    I think that one of the things that makes it a really great story is that the villain in this movie doesn't get beaten in the traditional sense - Potter still has his property, his wealth, his control, and so on. But just as in real life, individuals like George Bailey can still have those defining moments of joy and happiness even though the villain is still out there.

    Yes, I somtimes do ring a bell and say "hey, did you hear that? An angel just got his wings!!"

    I just watched it too. I love how George tells his mom he’s going to go out and do some “serious necking. “And when George and Mary are first flirting and the old guy yells out “Youth is wasted on the Wrong People!” We hold this movie up as traditional values but I see so Many parallels with today…with Vi and Potter and uncle Billy…even when George was yelling at Zuzu’s teacher and her husband takes up for her…And I still get SO MAD when Potter takes the money then swears out a warrant. So many themes common to today. Greed and hypocrisy and struggle and morality and duty…And a bit of a history lesson for the depression and a housing crisis that mirrors today in many ways. But people
    Banded together and helped one another. (People are still doing this for one another if you’ve ever seen GoFundMe)Of course it is a product of its time but I end up
    Watching it every year.

    .9the prelude of the movie often it's cut ot given the movie is so long. Dr. Seuess wrote several obrilliant children's stories staying on along the same theme.Horton Hears a Hoot is another life time classic ...thank you for the post

    @Jubal good Point about Potter. It just struck me last night that while the whole town was celebrating at the Bailey house he was alone with only people who were on his payroll and he has no joy at all.

    Thank you for sharing those observations.

    To me great art (particularly paintings and movies) tell a story AND have a richness to them where different people can pick up on different details. We all watch the same movie but from slightly different perspectives based on age, childhood experiences, life experiences, etc. I enjoyed reading the big takeaways you got from the movie, especially the points about Potter.

    It is always satisfying to see the bad guy “get it” at the end of the movie (Hans Gruber from Die Hard is the first example that comes to mind). But as you pointed out, that usually doesn’t happen in real life. Sometimes the bad guy “wins” with respect to short term gains but the good people win in the long run.

    @dennis22554 its a wonderful life is an amazing movie starring one of America’s all time greats Jimmy Stewart, his mere presence on the screen and the sound of his voice gives great comfort to many. Don’t worry about people dismissing it, there’s one or two that will always take offense to everything and yuck your yum and get away with it because some are treated with kid gloves. This is gonna get me in trouble I’m sure because we must protect feelings

    Have you bot noticed all the traditional values that have been sliding away..respect for the flag, country , pledge of allegiance. Chrisas.religion. etc. Respect for communty...its a differnttime..the past isn't perfect but there are a lot of great take aways. the focus of the topic wss the recommendation to watch a heart warming movie where one could d learn alot

    @dennis22554 Almost all of those seem like false values. A sense of community is good, but that's different from "respect for community". For the rest, I'd rather see good values like respect and decency towards people, being caring and compassionate, helping those who need help, and letting people get on with their lives if they're not hurting anyone.

    If the focus of the topic was to get people to watch a movie, you shouldn't have mentioned "traditional values". Your explanation has convinced me that there's nothing good in the movie for me. Particularly since watching it would yuck my christmas-free yum, to put it in @supadupa's terms.
