Do Opposites Still Attract?

  • @btc13 Yes, in Florida, where I could get arrested for using a public restroom.

  • I used a public restroom in Florida recently and wasn't arrested.

Your comment breaks the forum rules. See you in a few days [netrunner]

  • My comment was simply a statement of fact.
    I was not arrested.

What is the threat of your arrest for, in regards to using a public restroom?

  • says cisgender person...

    Sidebar:

I was conceived as a male. My gender doesn't need any modifiers.

  • @TxTom Your statement was completely irrelevant and unwarranted, and as with many of your other "statements" almost certainly rooted in transphobia.

But just in case you really are that ignorant, https://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps/nondiscrimination/bathroom_bans

  • I think I am way too much of an optimist for this world..the motivation for this post was simply that if we just stopped putting general labels on people always assuming the worst and really took the time to get to know some people who we may have some general differences with..we might be pleased and surprised from what we discover

  • No, my statement wasn't "rooted" in anything.

But you seem to repeatedly interject this topic in unrelated threads in order to levy accusations.

  • Sorry your thread got derailed, @dennis22554

  • Sequence of events:

@dennis22554 Says wouldn't it be nice if people weren't judged by labels

I agree, citing increasing anti-LGBT discrimination - that is, people who are discriminated against due to the LGBT label. There was a label involved here.

@btc13 claims that anti-LGBT legislation is not increasing.

    I cite Florida.

TxTom gets offended, possibly because I dared bring up anti-LGBT discrimination, and does his best (as always) to try to discredit it. And of course lies about his reasons.

Sidebar: TxTom apparently also does not know what cisgender means.

  • In fairness..Tom seemed only to try to insert humor...please correct me if wrong...

  • If there is problem...why not ask the person directly instead of making an assumption

  • No, he was trying to say that if a bad thing didn't happen to him even though it doesn't apply to him, it doesn't happen at all. Nothing unusual for him.

  • If it was a joke, he would have found what I said funny, instead of getting all defensive.

  • Surely there's a public restroom somewhere in the State of Florida that IronLemon could use without being arrested.

  • Surely there's a public restroom somewhere in the State of Florida that IronLemon could use without being arrested.

I knew you were going to use that deflection. Since it's not all of them, it's not any of them, right? Just following the transphobe playbook, I guess.

  • Refocusing the topic to its original focus..are there not examples where one has met a person with a pre.perceived opinion on their character formed by assumptions...only to recognize you were wrong..and the person was someone you enjoyed spending time with despite minor differences?

  • Since it's not all of them,

So, you could use a public restroom in Florida without being arrested?

  • So, you could use a public restroom in Florida without being arrested?

Why are you so desperate to deny that there are restrooms in Florida that I could get arrested just for using them?

  • @dennis22554 Of course. Sports/jock types that aren't just about sports. People belonging to certain religions who don't uphold the less appealing stereotypes. Things like that.

  • Back on topic...

To answer your question, OP, yes.

  • Florida has a large lbgt community..most of them seem to be able to go to the bathroom successfully...but that's an assumption on my part..something to be avoided

  • @ironloko Your statement is that anti-LGBT is increasing. I pointed out in a couple of ways that the general environment for LGBT people has been gradually improving over several years. Just because you cherry pick a specific example of a way in which you don't feel you have all of the rights that you want, does not change the fact that there is much more freedom to be yourself now than in the decades prior. It's like saying, wow it's cold out today so therefore there is no global warming. I go back to my Alan Turing comment. If you brought him to Florida today, and he could see the freedoms the LGBT community has today compared with in his time, he would disagree with your statement that anti-LGBT is increasing.

This thread did not have anything to do with anti-LGBT, nor did the thread about It's a Wonderful Life, but yet somehow you dragged those topics in. Believe it or not, there are discussions that should be able to be had that do not revolve around you or your lifestyle.

I will tap out of the conversation at this point because you will ignore the point that I am making and bring up something else to attempt to discredit my point, so please enjoy getting the last word in.

  • Sometimes I open a thread to read and expect objective conversation. But eventually it turns to a personal complaint or agenda.
(trying to not be guilty of this).
But can’t we all just be less self absorbed and more objective?
(but then what would everyone argue about?)

Re: Opposites/attraction, I guess some opposing factors are deal breakers, others are not. We probably place more value on some qualities for compatibility than others.

  • I'd agree that it depends on what kind of opposites. If it's something inconsequential like pineapple in pizza, maybe. I'd also say that the literature shows that in general, people who are similar in world view and stuff are more compatible and have more sustainable relationships in the long run. "Opposite attract" has kind of always been a myth.

"Despite the old notion that opposites attract, Indianapolis-based social psychologist Justin Lehmiller, who is a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute and author of Tell Me What You Want, says people naturally gravitate toward people who are familiar, even though the whole process is likely subconscious. There are some traits that work best in a relationship when they’re balanced out by an opposing partner — like dominance and submissiveness — but, by and large, “what is familiar to us tends to be what we like and are drawn to,” even if we’re not explicitly aware of it, Lehmiller says."

I'll also say it's pretty rude to tell someone who's feeling unsafe that they're wrong when you're not the one at risk.

  • @zalea
I especially agree with that last statement.

  • @dennis22554 If you focus on the LGB part and ignore the T part, as @btc13 did, you won't see many problems (yet - they've promised that gay marriage is next on the chopping block). And it is currently true that it's not illegal for a gay person to use any public restrooms. And it's also true that it's nowhere near as easy to tell if someone is transgender as people think. Most of the women caught by the bathroom police have been cisgender women.

However, the fact remains that if I use any gendered restroom in any government building or in an indeterminate number of private businesses, I risk being arrested for using the correct restroom. Or if I use the one that's correct as defined by law, I risk being assaulted.

But even at that, I'm not the primary target. The bathroom laws are meant primarily to hurt transgender youth. They apply to all K-12 schools. Any transgender student is forced to use the wrong restroom, subjecting them to dysphoria, harassment, assault, and even death (for example, Nex Benedict). The fact that I could be arrested is a bonus to them.

If you want facts, you're welcome to ask me. You'll get nothing of value from cisgender people who insist there is no problem because it doesn't affect them.

  • Isn't the proper venue lawmakers with you acting as an advocate..just wondering..this post is focused on the inaccuracy of assumptions and labels and talking to people directly before using them

  • When the lawmakers are opposed to your existence, they are not the right venue. If you look at their rhetoric, it is full of assumptions which have nothing to do with reality.

  • That sounds like your making assumptions and not proactively advocating for change
