TikTok Ban!

With the impending TikTok ban (at least for us Americans) just a week away, I'm curious to know people's thoughts on it! Do you think it will change anything? Do you not care at all? Will you miss it? Do you have plans of switching to a different app? Do people here even use TikTok? Let me know!

For me, I'm pretty sure the first time I ever heard of CC was on TikTok, so I probably wouldn't even be on here without it. Also, I am worried about a lot of small businesses that use TikTok for advertising, hope they are able to survive 🙏

    I have never used TikTok and I am not a fan of it for several reasons but I did not agree with the ban that was passed. If I were a gambling man, I would put $500 on SCOTUS overturning the ban this week before it goes into effect (and I have a decent track track record on predicting SCOTUS decisions).

    I was planning on using it to boost traffic to some digital products I’m developing. I’m upset because I kept dragging my feet getting it all set up, so by the time it is all finished, I won’t be able to use TikTok as a traffic source.

    I don’t know the intricate details as to why it is being banned. But I surmise that the U.S saw all of the money that TikTok was bringing to private vendors, and wanted more control over it (for taxation reasons, of course). Banning it from all American servers seems as if they’re just making good on a threat towards the foreign owners. All speculation.

    Have never used it myself, but my daughter is intrigued by it. So I'm having to educate myself on the site. As a parent, the negatives of TikTok appear to outweigh potential positives, but then I tend to view most internet sites, apps, and such with an eye towards how predators might use such tools to get to my kid and her classmates.

    Get rid of it if they don’t sell. China doesn’t play fair. Tic Toc is not a net positive

    All for it. Feel it's made us dumber as a society. So many times I've seen some jackass or jackasses dancing around or doing something obnoxious trying to make the next viral clip.

    I like turning off my brain to it there's definitely some really funny as well as interesting stuff there. But even if I weren't a fan I wouldn't want to do away with it and take away other people's source of entertainment like a Scrooge McDuck

    I find the whole thing amusing because the issue is it's owned by a Chinese based company and we don't want them getting out personal data. Sorry to burst some people's bubbles, but anything they'd get from TikTok, they already have.

    But then you have people like my sister who's up in arms about it because that is legitimately her only source of news

    I’ve learned soooo much on TikTok and my husband and I enjoy watching it together. We have what’s called “TikTok and snuggle” time. We send each other videos we think the other will enjoy and then watch all of them together snuggles in bed. I will definitely miss it if it goes. I was going to make a quick lip sync video of my first single I put out but I’ll wait and see what happens with the app.

    Concur with the above comment that the ban will be stopped by SCOTUS.
    TikTok can be an impressive marketing platform for many industries. There are a few business-savvy cuddlers who are also on this site that understand how to professionally market and advertise their service. The video fakery by pro cuddlers on TikTok is almost nil compared to the filtered sexy photos and sly offerings many profiles show on this site.

    If tik tok was sold to a non adversarial country and the algorithms fixed I would have no problem with it. But it’s a CCP spy tool and also turning the beats brains into mush. Tik tok in China is fixed so only positive news of China and the military and math and science. Meanwhile In the west it purposefully pushed dangerous challenges, nuisance influences, people playing dangerous planes and spreading propaganda and causing divisions between people based on race, gender and class.
    When you read the user agreement it allows tik tok to record your keystrokes others keystrokes who are around you, passwords, etc! The same way we don’t allow huawa phones to be sold here, another spy tool by the CCP.

    If it is banned there it would likely be a net positive. I would like to see it go further and have YouTube banned as well since they run disinformation campaigns.

    @JasonCuddles - You are describing the proverbial “slippery slope”. I agree with the comments above about the CCP doesn’t play fair and that TikTok has MANY negatives associated with it from location tracking of individuals (the federal government and several states banned TikTok on government owned phones, tablets and computers back in 2023).

    TikTok has also spread dangerous “challenges” that have resulted in deaths of minors and it is a propaganda tool for the CCP based on what their algorithm promotes and what it censors to a mass audience of Americans.

    But in spite of all the negatives, I still don’t like the ban because it gives the President the ability to ban any platform (regardless of who owns it) if he or she decides the platform threatens “national security”.

    I don’t care who the President is, that is too much power to put in one person’s hands. That is why I am 90+ percent sure SCOTUS will strike down the law that banned TikTok.

    I know it’s very popular and great for the reach as a marketing platform but for the sake of the kids (without parental supervision) who are getting their education and the news from it - being banned sounds like a positive to me.
    But won’t something similar pop up immediately to replace it and seriously would it really be completely banned and inaccessible?
    (I’m really not that knowledgeable about TikTok so please correct me if I’m misunderstanding something.)

    As a member of Gen Z- AND AS A NANNY- I CAN NOT STAND IT. Kids waste ENTIRELY TOO MUCH time on a phone or a tablet these days! I met a now 15 year old when he was 4 and he'll ask for an encyclopedia or a dictionary before saying something like, "Hey Google!" or "Alexa?".

    A lack of parenting has allowed Tik Tok to become the detriment that it is and I HOPE that if it goes away, parents will have to do a better job of being parents again. Accountability among parents/adults/caregivers also needs to become "a thing" again.

    Are the comments more about whether people care either way?
    I don’t actually have a TikTok account so when someone sends me a link I can’t open it 😉

    I believe tiktok had an option to stay in the U.S. if the company with close ties to the CCP sells to a different company

    Tiktok is under consideration for being banned because it thought to be an intelligence gathering channel and/or potential cyberwarfare tool for the Chinese government. Concerns have been raised about its ability, for example, to gather passwords for other apps, possibly including banking and financial apps.

    If this is indeed the case, it would enable the Chinese government to collapse the US banking system in a few hours by initiating mass transfers of funds. By 'collapse' I mean all banks and ATMs closed, all debit and credit cards non-functional. (If they have the server capacity they could do the same thing to all social media and the mobile phone operators.) If and when the banking system reopened, you would likely find that your money had all been transferred to who knows where: certainly nothing so crude as the Central Bank of China.

    If it is banned in the US, and the ban is effective, then it will probably be replaced quite quickly by something similar. (Anybody remember Vine?) In other words the implications for social media are modest to negligible in the medium term.

    The implications for national security are potentially significant.

    Most Chinese apps and businesses are just ordinary commercial enterprises. But a few ... aren't.

    I love tiktok and my friends and I share so many videos back and forth. I have a ton of videos favorited so I can get back to them about places I wanna visit, information about different programs, DIY instructions, things I'm interested in, etc.

    I'm sad to see it go.

    It is only being banned because of racism. If it were a Russian app, there wouldn't be this much bipartisan support for banning it. It is a damn shame that the Democrats have become just as racist as the Republicans towards both Palestinians and China.
