  • I won’t post the link to the CNN story because I don’t want to derail this thread, but the President of TikTok U.S. Operations is attending Monday’s inauguration here in DC.

Our incoming President has said that he will “most likely” give a 90 day reprieve to TikTok on Monday or Tuesday so they can continue operating while looking for a U.S. buyer.

NOT trying to be political - just sharing an update on the likely future of TikTok.

  • I think this thread turned political a long time ago.

  • Wow they actually did it

  • Rip tik tok lol how am I gonna scroll myself to sleep now 🙃

  • Back in my day, this was a tick tock.

  • YouTube shorts are ok but just not same level silliness

  • @pmvines i know a lot of people enjoyed it and benefited from it. I truly hope they can come to an agreement!

  • Glorious day

  • Realizing I’m addicted to tik tok because I am so genuinely saddened by this 😭😭😭 I was in denial!

  • You already give all your private data to Facebook, Instagram and Amazon. Just go to rednote. It’s the original TikTok. I’m Canadian so I can still use TikTok but rednote is my back up

  • Never used it have no need for it waste of time and brain use of kids I actively avoid things online that are usually so called “trending”

  • I mean, if it's not your thing cool but celebrating itd demise is kinda excessive to me

  • Celebrating is appropriate when it's one of the primary reasons gen alpha is as messed up as they are

  • Good riddance to bad rubbish.. but I have a feeling it'll be back.

@Sheena123 What if I don't use Facebook, Instagram or Amazon? Am I safe? Lol

I literally just started growing on TikTok, so I am a bit sad. Granted our government should protect us if they see something we don’t. However, TikTok has pros and cons. I’m sad for the people who make money, and are having to figure out next steps. I’m happy that kids no longer have access. I’m sad I no longer have free cooking classes. Information on TikTok was endless. I hope it come back.

    @Mike403 What about these?

Serious question: Can TikTok still be accessed in the U.S. by using a VPN in Canada or any other country?

I don’t use TikTok so I am not sure how they actually implemented the ban. Could a Canadian visiting the U.S. (or a person who created their Apple/Android account in Canada) still access TikTok?

As I understand VPNs, they should be able to allow you to bypass the ban. I don't know that ALL VPNs work.

From what I understand, some of the people in China have been circumventing their banned websites through VPNs. The government there has been spending a lot to try and block those. Apparently some VPNs were able to be blocked while other VPNs still continued to work. (I don't know which ones were the tougher VPNs)

Edit: I just did a quick search and apparently the way the tik tok accounts are setup, vpns do NOT work. There are stories of edge cases where they got it to work for a little while. But it sounds like it is too much trouble to keep it going long term.

Edit:, VPN works in app so long as you clear all previous data. Website with cookies cleared gives a strange error, tried to screenshot it but it appears to block screenshots, giving me nothing but black.

Edit edit: tried signing up/in with a throwaway Google account and it wouldn't let me get past this screen.

    Edit edit edit:

Tried signing up using a throwaway non Google email, despite canadian VPN got this.

Theyve probably got it setup to block well know VPN services, not hard to do. I guess if you're using one that is obscure enough you might be able to get in.

Tbh this is actually kind of brilliant on tiktoks, especially if they know they are gonna get a 90 day reprieve. Give the addicts 24+ hours of withdrawals and when they are back people are going to go HARD on tiktok usage.

@wilderdude 😆 ... I saw your post and edited my post and then saw you edited your post and we both kind of went opposite what we orignally said. On the screenshot comment, did you use the print screen button? For me, I have a snip and clip app that I always use in my desktop to screenshot things. I don't know if you have a similar app you could use.
