Were you a cuddly kid?

edited July 2018 in General

Did you show any symptoms being a cuddler when you were a child?

My mother told me that when I was 3 or 4 I used to run up to her and say "I love you mummy" with a hug. I also had a little purple silk blanket that I would carry around for comfort, and slept with it on my pillow.

All I was told, I was a very sensitive and “emotional” as a kid!

  • Only with my little sister. She was the only person I ever really felt close enough with to want to touch.

I also had a silk blanket I called my "silky" when I was very young. I gave it up when I was around four or five.

There were a few girls I had crushes on over the years whom I'd have been happy to hug and hold hands with, but none of them ever wanted anything to do with me. It wasn't until I was 27 that I finally found a girlfriend and discovered how much of a touchy person I really am after she opened my heart. I've still never had any inclination towards cuddling with other guys, though.

  • My family was not incredibly touchie-feely. As a toddler I sat on my grandfather’s lap as he read the funny papers, and explained them to me. I can’t remember a hug from my mother....I mean therevmust have been a few but certainly not much. My dad was okay with physical stuff, games on his lap or wrestling on the floor, but not after I was too old for that. My older sister married into a much more touch-friendly family. She has 4 kids and 11 grown grandkids and because we share a great love for each other, I’ve learned to hug them freely, but it took time. Cuddling has only been a dating experience for the most part, and I’ve not been terribly successful with that.

  • I'd scare my mom by hugging random strangers when I was young

  • @Wolf_Woman that's so cute! i know i was a very emotional kid and growing up, I didn't have emotionally available parents and family. the closest thing i had was a best friend who eventually stopped being my friend in 6th grade (my first platonic love heart break) but with everyone i was close to, i very much wanted to be physically close to, whether by hugging or hand holding. i even loved holding babies as a tiny kid (i was pretty small) because babies generally prefer being held. lol

  • Weirdly, I just wrote a really long blog post about this. Tl;dr No, I wasn’t. Abusive environment growing up. Lots of therapy and then cuddly friends as an adult.

  • Oh god no. I think I avoided everyone until about idk.. my early twenties lol. Now at 28, I find myself seeking out the loving comfort of another individual. It’s just soothing. As long as I can get my Criminal Minds on, I’m good to go.

    @ComradeKiwi I love Criminal Minds! <3

I was never super affectionate as a kid. I craved affection but was convinced it was a bad thing or that I didn't need it bc I was taught it was, 'seeking attention' and that I was being needy. Now that I'm older, my views have changed so I seek out hugs and whatnot when I'm feeling brave :p I'm shy.

  • I couldn't handle being touched as a child, my dad actually would try to make me sit and be hugged because he was afraid I would grow up not being able to handle love and attention lol. I still have sensory issues but like to give and get affection now

pre-damage, yes. post-damage, no. working on refinding those things of my youth and reincorporating them. Mixed success, but the community of this site has made it easier and I have met and cuddled and although it takes some getting-used-to, I love it!

@pmvines , I have a friend of mine who does not like to be touched at all.,she does not like to even shake hands. I have never asked her why but it seems she has gone through therapy to get past her situation.. Lately max I have seen her doing is do quick shake hands.,still not a hugger..

  • I just hated the way things felt, hated how clothes felt, hated how water felt, hated how the wind felt. I recall shrieking loudly when getting a haircut , the way the scissors felt rubbing across the back of my neck and the way the wet hair felt as it stuck to me. I had issues lol what can I say

    Wow.. I hear you..

Nope. I was very touch-averse growing up. Occasionally me & my sister would lay on her bed with the soles of our bare feet touching. But the more my teenage hormones intensified my autism issues, the more touch-averse I became. Dad pinning me down on the floor with his more than 180 lbs of body weight certainly didn't help; especially on 12/20/1998 when he did it for a very stupid reason: I was cussing more than I ever had before.

So between autistic sensory issues and my father's abuse of me growing up, I didn't lose my touch aversion until I met a real DeafBlind person who is (hopefully) still alive & well today. At least communicating with him was somewhat simple for those who know American Sign Language: just sign as you normally would and he'll follow your hands with his to 'feel the signs'. Just make sure you actually sign 'no' and 'not' instead of letting a headshake take their place as he won't see that.
