@IronLemon has a valid point. It might not be relatable to everyone, but she is doing nothing wrong by offering a different truth and perspective and opinion to the topic. Saying that she is happy to be miserable because she has a different opinion to OP is disrespectful and dismissive to the reality that not everyone shares the same reality. It comes across as judgmental and that she is doing something wrong when she is not.

  • Ha e a great night and I hope you can find a reason to smile

  • Also, if you think that a lack of a smile means unhappy, you've never seen an AuDHD person hyperfocused on their special interest.

  • Personal opinion coming…

An honest and genuine smile is an expression of internal satisfaction, happiness, joy. It’s welcome and I, even in my darkest moods, recognize it and am happy for that person. When I’m the right frame of mind it does make me smile and I’m grateful for the interaction.

It’s a gift to the world, and to anyone you choose to share it with.

What it should not be is a burden imposed on yourself, or others, or a tool for managing or modifying their response.

Don’t force it, or ask for it. Just welcome it when it comes.

@pmvines 💯 Judging people for not smiling are people you can never trust. That has been my experience.

Im always amazed when a relatively ppsitive post can be twisted into something hateful..I guess it takes talent..until the next time goodnight

  • @Katota I have to say, you have a wonderful smile. 😄

...... and your frowning face kind of looks like a kissy face to me 😅

  • Dennis, I suggest next time you include "danger" signs in the thread title as a fair warning to--and in anticipation of--those who will find something toxic about your positive thread.

    For example:

    🛑⚠️☣️☢️☠️ - Puppies! Ice Cream!

  • ... just some examples of different smiles ...

  • @TxTom At first I thought you were saying he should make every title about puppies and ice cream. My brain kicked in eventually...

(I think I have decided that I will end each post in this thread with a different smiling gif ... that feels fun and appropriate)

  • I'm just confused as to why the idea of understanding why someone isn't smiling is seen as such a bad thing.

Would you go to a funeral and tell everyone to just smile? (I think some people here would)

    @dennis22554

Nobody said anything about being hateful im not sure where you're getting that from.

  • Tom...the same group of people will respond to anything I post within 6 seconds of posting
..critical analyzed it..and condemned me to hell within seconds of reading it
....if it wssnt so pathetic it would actually be funny

    ..

  • Including puppies..kitt e ns..and the Easter bunny

  • Thank you for the suggestion
    .
Not sure it will work but it's worth b a try I

  • You'd probably have better luck if you relied less on exaggerations, binary thinking, selective reading, and creative interpretations. :)

If you post and someone else ends up not necessarily agreeing with you about something or having a different opinion or perspective, it doesn't mean it's personal or an afront to you. I see only different opinions being offered. I see no personal attacks being made to you.

    I assume that's your belief..who am I to argue
...I just hope people find real joy in smiling at people passing by on occasions
...you are free to agree or not..im not arguing what's a core va m ue in.my soul..you are free to have hi our own b eliefs

  • I forgot "oversimplifications" above.

But rest assured, I do smile. If I'm cuddling with a cute girl, there will be smiles a-plenty. But if I'm fighting for my existence, not so much with the smiles. But there are certainly times when I smile. It's not true that I don't smile. So you can be assured that I'm not a miserable person.

  • those who will find something toxic about your positive thread.

Yeah I have seen something positive turn toxic. That happened on the Happy Earth Day thread. Someone crapped on that because well they thought Earth Day and what it represents was bs. And based that on a comedian’s political rant they posted.

  • I hope b both of you encounter happier days..but I'm done argingabout

  • I have seen something positive turn toxic... the Happy Earth Day thread. Someone crapped on that... And based that on a comedian’s political rant they posted.

You conveniently forgot my comment after that was about toxic baby poop and fungi positively eating plastic.

So, actually, I uncrapped on the thread.

  • So, actually, I uncrapped on the thread.

It has to be crapped on by you for you to uncrap it. Which means you perpetrated toxicity on a positive thread.

I suggest you stay off the stand if you are ever arrested.

Political posts, which includes the climate change conspiracy of it being a hoax, falls under the Stricter Enforcement on Political & Drama-Driven Posts forum rules. See you in 3 months [netrunner]

  • @IronLemon
I'm not sure why pessimism was brought into this thread.

Smiles don't hurt people. I'm a very smiley person when I'm out in public. It can make someone's day! The amount of people I've met who were going through unimaginable hardships and had their day turned around just by me smiling at them and striking up a conversation is substantial! I've had someone tell me that I saved their life by just talking to them and helping them unpack their groceries. I won't go into too much detail of their situation because we ended up becoming friends.

Smiling is not "toxic positivity". Telling people the benefits of smiling is not "toxic positivity".

Toxic positivity is a RESPONSE to someone's grief, depression, or general sadness. Being positive to others without knowing their lives is NOT toxic.

I reread the post and there was nothing about expecting others to smile back.

  • @KuddlyKoala I suppose the main problem was with the sentence "People on my daily walk to a DC office seem to be less happy than In the past and I wonder why that is?" Without that, it would have been a positive post. But with that shoved into the middle of a post supposedly on the benefits of smiling, it comes across as dismissive. An empty "smile and everything will be better" platitude. A dismissiveness compounded by "I wish people would smile more often". Or maybe I was just annoyed at the willful ignorance behind that, which is not atypical for him.

And then, of course, all suggestions of understanding why someone isn't smiling were ignored or rejected.

If instead of striking up conversations, you told people to just smile more, how do you think that would go?

  • ... I dont know. It feels like there is a lot of forced optimism and pessimism at the same time and it is having a very bitter (and acidic) effect on this thread.

Does happy and smile equal each other? If I am smiling, does that mean I should be happy? If I am happy, do I need to smile? If I am not happy, is smiling bad? If I happen to be walking down the street, should I be smiling or not?

  • @KuddlyKoala ...simple thank you
.all solid points in line with original posting..unfortunately some people will never find happiness

  • @dennis22554 How come you aren’t smiling in your picture? You should smile more often. You must be unhappy.

@TheFunCartel That ......... is actually a fair point.

@dennis22554 You should fix that. Sometimes it is easier to show them than to tell them.
