Cuddle Comfort....in The 1990s??

Cuddle Comfort is a 21st century endeavor, no?

But.......what if it was created during The early 1990s as a late 20th Century website? Where would it be featured? Which musical artists would name drop it? Which celebrities would be tied to CC?

IMO, I'd think it'd be brought up after the Columbine massacre--somebody would mention it could've helped somehow.

I don't know which talk show would mention it first: Oprah, Richard Bey, Rikki Lake, Donohue, Sally Jesse, Jerry Springer, People's Court lol

I don't know which popular TV sitcom would mention it first: Seinfeld, Friends, Martin, Living Single

Chime in...what if Cuddle Comfort had been around since the early 1990s...!

I tend to doubt the Columbine thing. Mass shootings happen all the time in the US and I have never seen anyone cite CC as a solution to that problem. Pretty sure the average mass shooter needs more than a hug to fix their problems.

  • It would have been popular on the BBS's. And the website for some reason would have dancing hamsters.

As for which show, I think Buffy would have had an episode about it.

  • I tend to doubt the Columbine thing

I disagree. During my first official cuddle, this was my first thought--(not Columbine, per se), but that this thing, CC, could 'generally' help prevent mass shootings. I think. Especially if it were more known, more popular, IMO. I can think of 2 mass shootings off the top of my head that CC *maybe could've prevented tragedy: (1) August 2009, lone gunman, George Sodini, murdered 3, wounding 9; gym aerobics class outside Pittsburgh. Even though CC existed in 2009, it's not clear G.S. was aware nor participated. (This is a very debatable example). And (2) The 2019 Valentine's Day mass shootings of Parkland Florida via Nikolas Cruz. Now mental illness can't be solved or repaired with hugs, but, I'm hoping it could quell an urge, or at least help stall an insanity, until a better resolution comes along. It feels like there's not enough temporary stalling, temporary quelling these mass tragedies.

And I'm arguing that if CC was available since the 90s and generally known by the masses in the early 2000s, who knows what would be different today--especially if those who needed help, got some help from CC? I'm not saying CC is a perfect answer, I'm saying CC offers hope and a different perspective. What I've taken from CC is that a complete stranger can show me empathy and compassion, if I really need it; that a 'more affordable', 'casually available', 'random fellow peer' could attempt to level with me and attempt to reach me in a way that a passing psychiatrist or passing counselor or passing family member cannot.

I feel like today in 2025, the general population isn't fully aware CC and others like it, exists. And I'm saying if CC and others existed since the 90s and had a fair or larger reputation by now, would some things be different? I'm hoping so.

And I believe if CC was around since the 1990s, I would've sought it out as soon as I heard about it. I'm very certain of that.

@89cadillac We'll have to agree to disagree. Mass shooters need, at the least, serious therapy for their mental issues. CC does not provide that. It is not therapy and very few cuddlers have any training to deal with deep-seated emotional issues.

  • If CC came out in the early 90’s, most likely only students would most likely know about it. Mostly schools and affluent families only had computers. There wasn’t much of a World Wide Web. Mental health was not talked about in open public like it is today. It was still heavily stigmatized. Chat rooms and similar didn’t get popular until the late 90’s early 2000’s I believe.

I dont think it would have been accepted as a healing modality on any level like it is now. Complimentary Health care was pretty much unheard of. Except eastern ones like Acupuncture & Aruvedya possibly and those were not common yet.

  • Hey the pet rock was popular in the 70s so I am sure cuddling could have been popular in the 90s.

  • I gotcha, @WriterGF

Interesting take, @Bear I hadn't thought about access to computers; and now that you brought it up, how would the payment system work lol

Yes, @IronLemon I can also see it come up on Buffy

    lol @FunCartel_

  • @TheFunCartel by the 90’s We could have pet rock cuddles.

I have a pet rock listen under my profile.

  • @bear - Before the internet, there was the BBS (Bulletin Board System) that started in the late '70s. Some of them had chat rooms and nearly all of them had message boards/forums. Most conversation was local as people dialed into local computers and communicated with other users who also connected to that same computer.

  • @Mike403 was that the average person ? Wasn’t that mostly schools and more affluent families who had a computer.

I remember in 82 when top load VCR’s were like over $1000 and not many had them. Computers were even more expensive.

The first computer I had access to was the size of a refrigerator and worked with magnetic tape. We learned punch cards. They was 1982. No one I knew owned a PC.

  • @Bear - There were more affordable computers such as those from Atari. Atari 400 and 800 computers came out in 1979 with them being $550 and $1,000 respectively. Kind of expensive for those times but not out of reach for some families.

  • @Mike403 you just proved my point
Not out of reach for some families. Only about 8.4 % of families had a computer by 1984.
    So schools and affluent families.

  • In the mid-90s, I think a lot of families had a computer with a modem. Compuserve and AOL were big. I was in school, but not someplace that provided internet. I had a computer and a publication with a listing of a ton of BBS's, all of which had "networks" which were shared between systems. I miss those days, actually. I met quite a few people through that.

  • @Bear - In the early '80s, my dad got me an Atari 800 for video games because it was able to do arcade level graphics. Something the Atari 2600 couldn't match or even come close.

  • Cuddlecore music emerged in the early 1990s as a subgenre of indie pop and punk music. It gained popularity particularly within the DIY (do-it-yourself) music scene during that time. The term "cuddlecore" was coined by members of bands like Tiger Trap, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Mirah, and The Softies, who emphasized a cute, sweet, and often whimsical aesthetic in their music. The movement emphasized intimacy, friendship, and positivity, contrasting with the more aggressive and angsty themes of other punk and indie genres of the era. While it never reached mainstream popularity, cuddlecore had a dedicated following within indie music circles during the early to mid-1990s.

  • I don’t think that Cuddle Comfort in the 1990s would have helped prevent such shootings mentioned. I mean, there are now a lot more school shootings than before and we have the website Cuddle Comfort now. Cuddle Comfort really isn’t like too well known but way before I heard about Cuddle Comfort and cuddle parties, I think I might have heard about Cuddlr or Spoonr but never made an account in that platform, and later on when I have read about those platforms after creating an account here, I heard that those accounts were shut down due to many women having terrible experiences with men, and even here I hear that there are many terrible experiences or just too many messages that most female enthusiasts just end up abandoning their account or deleting their account, and even a good amount of new professionals do that soon after switching to Pro. So I don’t see Cuddle Comfort becoming popular or mainstream like Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat. That might happen with cuddle parties, that becoming mainstream and popular somewhere down the line, as they have facilitators supervising it, but most definitely not with Cuddle Comfort.

  • It is very silly and preposterous to think that an interwebs cuddle site would prevent school shootings. I have never heard a more naive understanding of mental health.

  • A cuddle site doesn’t even stop sexual assault.

    @TheFunCartel

Exactly ! Bad people do bad things regardless of any niche barely known about site that lends itself to a shared interest/hobby

  • I can believe a cuddle site would help prevent shootings that are the result of someone being bullied (although a quiet suicide away from other people is more common). But I've also seen shootings that are the result of people disagreeing with the lifestyles of people around him. No amount of cuddling would have prevented that.
