Thanks for acknowledging that Independence Day in America's history does " hit differently" and I was ignorant to this day until I moved to Texas where Juneteenth is widely celebrated!

Definitely one of the most important days in American history. I’m glad the government made it an official holiday a few years ago making it easier for people to celebrate and to honor the date.

Still a red headed stepchild of a holiday. Barely any acknowledgement, will take some years imo.
Doesn't help that it's in the middle of the week this year. I know the exact date is important to some, but honestly it would do better if they had it be the final 'teen' Monday of the month of June.

I agree. We should do something like that for Independence Day, too. Maybe the first Monday of July.
I was so glad when it was made a Federal Holiday. I know some areas do an observed holiday on the Monday before if it lands mid-week, but it'd be nice if it were standardized. I was kinda mad to find out I'd already missed a local celebration because they held it the first Saturday of June - coinciding with the city Pride event no less, but in a different part of town it's like they were making us choose between which event to attend/support, which sucks, and I didn't even see advertising for the Juneteenth event til the day before. Not super surprising for an area that is so heavily white, but still very disappointing and I'm hoping they do better next year.
I actually first even heard about Juneteenth when I lived in rural NC near where the War of the Regulators started (the precursor to the Revolutionary war that we also don't hear about a lot) - not far from @Will564 😁
I definitely wish history classes covered more of these diverse culturally-tied events - to me at least they're a lot more memorable and meaningful than a lot of the stuff I had to memorize for tests.

I have in my room a frame of an official proclamation from the Governor of New Jersey declaring Juneteenth an official State and Federal holiday and a dedication to Miss Opal Lee for her tireless efforts in making the holiday official in America.
Here's something that's been tickling at my brain recently - when I was a kid (elementary school through high school), Juneteenth would get mentioned once every few years. Even in my early years of college, it wasn't in the curriculum but once that I could recall. But the times that it was mentioned, it was always "Emancipation day", which made sense given the historical events of 1865. So I'm puzzled as to how it's become "independence day" instead.
Not terribly important, this is just the sort of thing that goes through my head sometimes

@DaSuTro I'm not sure what framed document you have regarding Juneteenth, but I can assure you the Governor of NJ, or any state governor, declared it a federal holiday. That's thunder the purview of the President of the US. In this case, former POTUS, Joe Biden (2021).

@cuddlefaery As an instructor of U.S. History, I think I can offer a couple reasons why you didn't hear of Juneteenth when you were in school (k-12). First, it wasn't a federal holiday yet. Along with that, it's a relatively newer day of recognition in our society as a whole. Second, and perhaps more practically, most teachers will address holidays/celebrations when they occur on our calendar. Most school let out for the summer prior to the Juneteenth celebrations.

Take this as a day to educate yourself and the people around you about American history! Most of what was done to enslaved people is never acknowledged by the masses, which is a failure of our education system's whitewashing.
