Affection in messages (before meeting)

How do most people feel about kisses ("xxx") in messages? I know everyone has their own comfort level with chat "style", emojis etc, same as everyone has their comfort zone for physical touch, or what feels like standing "too close", or eye contact etc.

For myself I don't tend to use kisses, by which I mean xxx, to people I don't have a personal connection with. Writing a letter or card, I do put them. In chat with family and friends rarely do, unless we're chatting about something difficult or emotional. or, say, I'm thanking them for something that really touched me.

But some people throw xxx around much more freely and I'm fine with that, it's like some people call everyone "darling", I don't take it as personally meaningful.

But from a complete stranger I do find it odd and don't much like it. I've said so sometimes and they've said sorry, and they meant no harm - so that's fine. Intention is everything. One person told me they'd feel they was being unfriendly without it, it felt cold not to add "xx", which gave me a different perspective.

What's prompted this question: I've been chatting with a guy on here for a day or two, just the opening stages of conversation really,. Seems like a nice guy and I was thinking we'll get along. But we're only a few messages in. He does tend to use "xxx" a lot. Not just to end a message but on most sentences. In my last message, I replied to what we were chatting about (cuddling, massage, bring tactile in general, how healthy touch is etc etc) - agreeing with what he'd said about how pleasurable it is - and I ended that reply with "Just saying, I'm not comfortable with all these "xx", we don't know each other at all."

Next I know, he's blocked me.

Was it a harsh way of wording it? Could/should I have put it more gently? How would you say this? If you received that reply would you find it unkind or aggressive, or some other version of negative? Does" Just saying "come across passive aggressive or something like that? (I meant literally just saying because I wasn't annoyed, just letting him know.)

Or do I just conclude that he's unreasonable and I'm well rid of him? Does this tell me he was thinking non-platonic and I made myself easy to rule out as a possibility?

Alternatively, if you're chatting with someone and finding their tone over-familiar, how would you ask them to change that? Some may drop them without trying to tell them, but I tend to the benefit of the doubt and assume they meant no harm, so especially if all else is good, it's worth communicating first - not by the third or fourth time, but at least once.

Curious to get different perspectives.

  • Not harsh, and I question his motives. If he just said sorry and stopped using xxx or even ghosted out of embarrassment would be one thing, but the block makes me think there were "other" motives.

  • Does this tell me he was thinking non-platonic and I made myself easy to rule out as a possibility?

@muddlemand ^^^This 99.9% of the time. You are doing nothing wrong and if xxx offends you or is weird from a total stranger, then that should be your absolute line in the sand. Making this your boundary or anything your boundary is your choice and is never wrong except to the person that demands you ignore your boundaries—and for people like that who demand you ignore your boundaries…well, that’s why the boundaries are there in the first place. Good luck in your pursuit of cuddlers.

  • It's one thing to be verbally affectionate with someone you're familiar with and have that kind of rapport. From strangers, not so much

  • [Deleted User]LadyLapCat (deleted user)

I’m 100% certain you dodged a non-platonic bullet. I either block out do not respond to messages with xxx because kissing is a violation of the TOS, and strangers who send them in their messages (whether intentionally or not) are forcing affection into a dynamic that is platonic.

Friends sending kisses is a different thing - but that’s not the way it was framed here, so don’t come at me 😂😂😂😂

  • Thank you all for validation!

@Mr_Cuddle_Bear that's my instinct, actually blocking is the giveaway.

@TheFunCartel you put it well! Being told "Please, no" must be one of his boundaries :)

@pmvines Yes that's my feeling. But one person's normal is another's way over the top, and it's never easy to tell especially online.

  • I don’t think much about it when I get affectionate emojis from females. Sometimes yes it’s a sign of affection but most of the time I take it as it’s just kind of a default signature. All of that being said, sounds like he was over doing it and being overtly flirty. I don’t think you were being harsh at all. You have every right to set your boundaries.

  • The constant “xxx” is a red flag to me

I will add that personally, bringing up massage is also a red flag because pretty much no one wants a real massage with clothing on. I will do a light massage over a t shirt but they always want more. I know offering massage here is very common but for me it’s become a problem.

  • @muddlemand Lol! 😆 Oh, that BLOCK is a definite sign that he was expecting "more than cuddling". Lol 😆

I have been blocked for similar reasons as what you have described. 😁👍

Take that block as a good sign, and NO you were not harsh in your response of not being comfortable with "💋💋💋", I have only used them when communicating with romantically/sexually partners and nobody else. ☺️

Not open to that anymore. 😏

Others will just get hugs 🤗🤗🤗 and handshakes 🤝🤝🤝 as far emojis and nothing more. ☺️

@muddlemand please Report him if you haven't already. This is a standard pattern which we have seen many times before. He knows exactly what he's doing, and it isn't what this site is for. He has now moved on to somebody else.

    If in doubt - Report.
    The Moderators, many times

The Mods have a number of possible sanctions available to them. Even if the perpetrator has not technically broken the terms of service, still Report. This allows the Mods to spot patterns of behaviour, and intervene early where necessary.

If you state a boundary, and somebody is disrespectful of that boundary, then Report them. It's indicative of future problems. Respectful, genuine people may enter into a constructive conversation about the boundary, or politely end the connection if your boundary isn't compatible with what they are looking for, but that's all fine.

bringing up massage is also a red flag

    👍👍👍

@g_w_t_w Yep, I have been blocked for rejecting "massage offers" too. 😆😆😆

No thanks Dude, I got my pick of excellent massage therapists here in town that knows what I want and more importantly HOW TO CONDUCT THEMSELVES while doing it! ☺️👍

I know the difference between massaging and molesting, no thank you Dudebro! 😑🤚

    @Katota
💯 my thoughts exactly. I always wonder how Pros who offer it manage the expectations.

  • @LadyLapCat I missed your reply earlier - I do think some would be astonished (and horrified) that others see anything wrong with it, as in some "dialects" (for want of a better word) in chat it doesn't mean actual kisses. And cuddling is affectionate... It's all about definitions IMHO. But yes absolutely , it's how we react when told that says it all.

  • @Morpheus This wasn't female, and some men are just as likely to be free with their xxx, but on the whole men messaging women are more cautious with that kind of thing unless they think both are thinking more than platonic.

I looked back - every message ends "xx" or "xxx" including the very first introducing himself. But one or two other sentences also and those were the ones about massage etc.

  • @g_w_t_w He didn't exactly bring massage up, I could have made this clearer. I'd asked how he found CC. He said he used to be on a site called Massage Exchange and I'm on one too - not exactly the same URL but I think mine used to have the address he gave. I haven't looked at the one he linked to so don't know what it's like or its values/mission statement, but the one I'm on is as strong as CC is on protecting members who want platonic only. (from what I've seen by just belonging. Disclaimer, I haven't connected with anyone on there so I can't vouch for how well it works but the setup is very like CuddleComfort.)

  • @Katota Oh, I should be clear it wasn't the lips emoji 💋 only the letter x "xxx"

🤣 But yes, it was pretty much every sentence. Simply signing off xx wouldn't alarm me - although personally I still think it's too much to a stranger in message #1.

  • So overall, by blocking me he saved me the trouble :D

  • @CuddleDuncan That's a good point about spotting patterns. I always shrink from getting people in trouble needlessly, but you've made me see why it's better to err on the other side. Thank you for putting it that way.

  • I enjoy terms of endearment.

While I don't use them, myself, I've had many cuddlers use them when addressing me. The various words used were not meant to be taken in a sexual context, nor did I interpret them in that way.

No, I did not report these cuddlers.

  • Excessively affectionate language over text could be love bombing.

  • On my first day at university in Bristol, I went to the student union canteen for lunch. The dinner lady behind the counter said, in a thick Bristolian accent, "What can I get you, my lover?".

My innocent 18 year old self replied, "I'm terribly sorry, I'm not sure we've met."

Anyway it turns out - as you have already guessed - that it's just the way of speaking in those parts.

  • but on the whole men messaging women are more cautious with that kind of thing unless they think both are thinking more than platonic

@muddlemand You are correct. Men equating their experience with these things to what a woman experiences is common in the forums. The “I didn’t take it sexually” take from a man is because most women are not sexually predatory. It is an easy thing for a man to say because men are generally not navigating tricky sexual waters where they are a potential victim of sexual assault or worse. Predatory men are far more common, and there are different levels to it—from those who are overt to those who are much more subtle. Men who are self aware and listen to what women perceive as creepy or inappropriate tend to avoid such signs and language and would never say their experience is the same as a woman’s. If it makes you uncomfortable, then do whatever you need to do—chastise the person, block them, or report them. It is your prerogative what you choose to do…full stop.

Regarding the use of emojis, I know I have a tendency to over use them when the conversation is somewhat casual. I can't help feeling like I'm coming across as too serious or even mad if I don't use them to express my intent. I'm just not naturally a cold person.
When I say emojis I mostly mean smiles and laughing ones. Anything with hearts is only for the much more casual and personal messages.

  • @muddlemand Count your blessings, he did you a favor.. You should have Blocked him first! 😊 The kissy face 😘, hearts 🥰, X’s and O’s.. 🤮 he was fishing 🎣 to see if you would take the bait .. He was testing your limits.. good for you that you stood your ground and let him know the xxx’s made you feel uncomfortable .. He had unsavory intentions, ( in my opinion) ,otherwise, he would have apologized and respected your feelings.. Your feelings are valid.. I report them and Block them when they send me inappropriate emoji’s or the X’s and O’s.. It’s disrespectful and they know it.. I hope you find an enthusiast like yourself who is kind and understands that the kissy face emoji’s , xxx’s send the wrong message on a Platonic site..

  • Seems like there’s a consensus here that if “Mr. XXX” can’t respect your boundaries via chat, you’re better off cuddling a cactus.

As someone who has been here for a while, let me add that we do not come to a consensus all that often.

  • @TxTom but do you mean on day 1 or 2 of chat before knowing each other at all?

  • A couple, yes.

  • I looked back - saying it isn't easy to get contacts on here:
"sent a few messages out but only 2 replies ATM including yourself xx."
I took it as just a smile, sort of thanks for replying.

After finding out that we'd both been on Massage Exchange, then it was
"Wow how weird is that maybe we could become massage and cuddle partners xx 😘"

And after that pretty much every sentence.

Didn't feel like love bombing exactly, but being fine with a long drive (2-3 hours) "if you gel with someone" - did feel more like that. I said I never cuddle the first time we meet....

I've seen this before, talking as if I'm someone who matters before we've spent any time getting to know each other. I think some find it mildly insulting not to talk as if you're that important.

  • @CuddleDuncan 🤣🤣 yes! I moved to Wiltshire from further east - first time I was called "me lover" took me by surprise to say the least!

    ... More accurately, "loverr" 🤣

  • I have encountered, many times, where I am chatting with someone and they start addressing me as "honey", "baby", "sweetie", etc. and it annoys me. If you can't remember my name because you have too many conversations going, I don't need to chat with you. I find the use of pet names in this environment to be demeaning and disrespectful.
I have asked people to withhold from using such terms, and they do, for 2 or 3 messages, then they go right back to it. I only ask nicely twice, and then I discontinue communication.

@muddlemand, I don't think your response was harsh or unfounded. We all have our comfort zones, and we need to always remember that those feelings we get inside are there to protect us and should not be ignored.

@MonkeyNeedsAHug Yes!, I haven't interacted much but I've lurked enough to to have noticed that about consensus 🙂
