If kids use A.I. to do their research, their essays, homework; If we become dependant on A.I. to do our thinking, wont that atrophy the brain in the evolutionary timeline? The teachers wouldn't let us use graphing calculators in school so we would use our brains...
There are already studies published that show people who use AI a lot have decreased brain function in certain areas. Here is one of them, but there are others too:

I doubt that any of what is described is permanent. I bet your brain could bounce right back if you stopped using ai as much.
Ai could be a tool that helps us cognitively, to help us evolve and do more. But that would require taxing your brain in other ways. If you use AI to do less thinking overall, your brain will atrophy. It you use it to do work that you then build upon with your own thinking, then it could be great.
