please share cute pet pics and memes, I'm going through it

Hey all,

I know I haven't been very active on here in a while, but I could really use the support of some friends. On top of all the financial, physical, and mental stress I'm going through with moving, I'm now facing an impossibly difficult decision.

CW: pet euthanasia

My eldest cat, a former feral foster fail I've had for 10 years, has been dealing with a number of health and behavioral issues. Due to low income and my own health issues, I've been trying to rehome him since the pandemic, but no one wants to adopt an elderly cat with so many expensive issues. It's now being recommended that I euthanize him, and I'm completely broken feeling like I've utterly failed him and the added strain of further costs. I'm making the appointment now, but I'm struggling so hard. I've not had a pet put down since I was a teen, and this feels so much worse than the death of my last cat as I feel so responsible for the whole situation.

I hate sharing something so heavy, but I just really need all the emotional support I can get right now. I know no one can fix this and yet things will work out somehow, but I'm just so heartbroken and grieving. I'll be ok, I have mental health support and a few friends around, but I'm reaching out where I can to try to get through the next several days.

Please, if y'all could share some cute pet videos, pics, funny memes... Just anything to distract me. I truly appreciate our little community and all the friends I've made here <3

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. It's such a tough thing to go through. I've gone through it four times. I'm sure you did your best for him, but if he has a lot of health issues . . . Anyway, my heart goes out to you.

This is my 10 year old Layla. She's been with me for 7 years.

@cuddlefaery What are your cat’s health issues? Is it something that could be treated if you had a certain amount of funds? Would your cat have a good quality of life if treated? Love cats ❤️

  • Awwwwww @cuddlefaery so sorry to hear this. I can relate to needing a distraction.
So many things here but you’ve asked for a diversion with a teence bit of kindness and a big hug from my part of the world.

  • And side note @cuddlefaery I love the blue Inside Out costume on Monday… “Sadness” seems a good fit for this week.

I know having animals are such a loving and essential part of our being… kudos to you for doing hard things because you have so much love in your heart. We’re with you… in heart spirit …

  • Ugh @cuddlefaery , sending hugs your way. Whatever the outcome - because of you, your foster cat has had 10 years that it wouldn't have otherwise had!

@BlueIris OMG, what an absolute FLOOF. Why am I getting the sense that your cat is going to send me on an epic side quest?

Here's my cat, making some sort of Feline Eye of Horus....

  • Hope these help!!

@SweetCuddler33 unfortunately it's been a growing list of chronic issues without easy fixes. Kidney damage, urinary blockages, a skin tumor (unknown if benign), difficulty grooming and doesn't tolerate it so he keeps getting matted, super high anxiety and stressed by changes and outdoor cats so he's been spraying (which is probably not helping the urinary issues), a few problematic teeth, overweight and not losing on a restricted diet.

It's unlikely even if I had the thousands of dollars needed to get all the tests and procedures done that his quality of life would improve much. I'm definitely asking the vet those questions, but it's unlikely to change the outcome. He's 13 years old and had a really rough first 3 years before I got him. It's just so sad because he can be so sweet and affectionate in his own way, but essentially he has PTSD that causes him to get overstimulated on a hair trigger and lash out at anyone around him. He's made a ton of progress with me over the years, but he still doesn't tolerate being picked up and held, groomed, nails trimmed, etc. so extensive vet care is a nightmare for him.

Edit to add: thank you for rephrasing your comment/question. I was definitely getting triggered by it. I can appreciate the sentiment now 🫂

@MeltWithMiles Thanks! Layla is ridiculously floofy. She's a retired show cat. Here's a glamour shot I grabbed of her posing on the kitchen counter.

  • I don’t currently have a pet, but I am complete sucker because they are so tender. My friend just got a new puppy. She’s calling her Cher. ♥️ So tender. Up on her shoulder. Just wanting her to know she is loved when she is sick.

Thinking of you out there in CA. 🩵

@cuddlefaery Sister Skinny is a naughty girl, and she's also Poly. look at her with the boys! When she found out about your cat, she wanted to hug you and wish you well and all the best and thank you for the great 10 years you gave him. She is the only cat in the household with a genuine good and kind heart that never wishes harm on anyone. All the others are selfish self-serving manipulating pricks, but she still loves them.

We also had a 60% attendance for dinner last night. not bad.

@cuddlefaery will you show us a picture of your sweet boy? 🐈‍⬛ I am praying for him 🙏 ❤️ and for you ..

  • Thank you all 💖

    When it rains, it pours.

I reached out yesterday to my ex who has had our cat Duke for the last 10 years since our breakup. I hadn't heard any updates in awhile and was hoping to hear some of his shenanigans as a farm-dog-cat out in rural NC. Well.... My ex told me that not only had Duke passed, but it'd been a year and a half. Neither he nor any of his family I'm still in contact with bothered to let me know. He'd even shared pics since then and basically was in denial so avoided telling me. While I still care for my ex a lot, and I empathize with his grief... I'm so freaking mad at him and now grieving another fur baby on top of everything else.

I'll share some pics of my sweet boys in separate comments.

But truly, thank you all for reaching back with so much warmth.

  • This is Jasper, aka Sasspurr, aka Jabbers - the original subject of the post.

  • And this is J. W. Duke (short for John Wayne). He was 13 also, and 21 lbs of dog-cat chaos. When I moved back to CA, he didn't adapt well to city living, so I took him back to live in rural NC with my ex's family. He was our baby 🖤 At least he got 10 full years of chasing gophers, chilling with goats, guarding chickens, bullying dogs, and so much love from a large family.
