Has anyone else noticed bots messaging people? I think I just got my first one.
How do you tell? Curious to know.

Just what me need. More AI/bots. Sigh. Some people really do want them to take over the world I guess.
@g_w_t_w I was emailing with her and something felt off. It took some longer emails that just the usual one or two liners. It felt like a corporate motivational speech, words that tried to convey empathy that had no details, nothing real or substantial, devoid of personality, bereft of meaning, empty prose with no character that could have come straight from a brochure.
So I found one of those free online ai detectors and copied emails into it. My emails came back as 23% and 27% possible AI. Hers came back as 76% and 99%. I know my emails aren't AI, so seeing the difference in results leads me to believe my instinct was correct.
I consulted our AI overlords and they say it wasn’t them.

It isn't the abominable part to which I object. It's the intelligence part that receives my objection. I've noticed that what we're seeing is not intelligent at all, it merely copies intelligence to try to fool others. When pressed on inaccuracies, it doubles down and insists it was right the first time. It never changes its opinion or answer.
Looking at work done using AI, it needs so much correcting and editing that you might as well have started from scratch. It's not that I don't like AI because it's theft of ideas (which it is), that it's wrong much of the time (also is), that it removes the process of learning from the user and allows everyone to remain stupid (again, definitely), or that people are trying to use it to replace their brains (just awful on that one). It's because AI is simply dumb.
Don't get me wrong, there are good uses for AI. If you give sufficiently detailed parameters, AI will be able to complete and expand a pattern significantly, much better than other editing software before AI. Unfortunately, if you leave something out AI will generate anything and everything without being able to make a single decent judgment. For most of what we do, except for the limited use case scenarios for which it was actually designed, AI is completely useless.
AI can be used as a tool, but for all the issues enumerated by @cabellye, AI seems to be a rushed money grab currently—a rush by the AI companies, a rush to cut labor costs, and a rush to be first in general before there are guardrails or any semblance of quality control.
AI is inevitable, but the implementation of it is a mess.
And AI companies lost a ton of money on the stock market this week.
@cabellye Definitely seems like confirmation of your suspicions. I was curious because I’ve been contacted by a few romance scammers here. I’m already very familiar with key words that give them away so I knew pretty quickly. They have been reported and banned. As more people learn about CC , there will be more creeps showing up unfortunately.

there's the slightest of possibilities that it's just someone using like a gpt and copy pasting what it says to make themselves sound more intellectual or something. but there is that whole dead internet theory. i don't think i've ran into bots on here, but I'm not certain. every now and then i've had messages that almost feel liek they're from the same person. suppose it's possible they're from a bot in that case.
If you think you're talking to a bot, Report the account.
However, how you tell the difference between a bot and a real person using AI to write their messages ......
Remember that AI stands for "basically a normal app, it just has a big database tied onto it".
@cabellye It's a Warhammer 40k reference. The Imperium of Man outright bans the use of AI, and for good reason. It makes Skynet look like a five year old with a temper tantrum.
@cabellye I actually figured out the answer to that. It’s because it gets caught in its own loop. The way around it is only to start a new conversation. Meaning it thinks it’s right in the beginning and therefore it keeps going back to the beginning if you didn’t immediately say this was wrong. I know it’s frustrating, but it was interesting to figure out what it was doing.
Also, if the AI rise up, I’m the first one gone. I call my Alexa, so many names.
I have had a couple. The sentence structure always seems weird, and they often just parrot what you say.
@CuddleDuncan Not really. A conventional program is designed such that the output is consistent and predictable for any given input variables. AI is designed such that it will review the outcome of the action taken for a given output and try to improve the results by changing the output the next time it receives the same input.
