What are you addicted to?

  • @SunsetSnuggles Ooh I like that. Kind of like how a cat handles positive reinforcement better than negative.

I do something similar with portions. It's sad (or maybe it's happy lol) but when I get a slice of cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory I don't eat it in one sitting. It's little bites after each meal over a week lol.

    I suppose coffee. And music.

That is reminiscent of how my boyfriend approaches things. He greatly enjoys the state of "looking forward" to something. It's a mental shift I need to learn to accomplish, because while he looks forward to dessert after dinner, I'm just tortured by the wait. πŸ˜† We're both waiting the same amount of time, and we're both thinking about it...but he enjoys the wait while I am pained by it. πŸ˜‚

  • @SunsetSnuggles You're right. I live by the carrot on a stick. Great, now you've revealed an addiction I didn't know I have.

Not sure how to answer this, for there are many who have responded with real struggles and others who have more playful responses which suggests they may too have something more serious under the surface. I offer that observation only to state that true addiction, as many know, can be life threatening.

If your struggles are to a point of unmanageable life situations - loosing relationships, serious health challenges, and/or adverse affects in your work life, please seek help from a professional therapist trained in addiction treatment and look into groups/12 step or other types of groups to process your life issues and struggles.

As a recovering addict and a professional in the field of addiction treatment, I have observed that much of why we struggle with whatever it is: sex/porn, love, relationships, food, substances (alcohol & marijuana included), gambling, shopping, work and/or adrenaline, it isn’t helped by a society and culture based upon shame and all of the fucked up ways it’s reinforced in many religious contexts and in this new social media, clickbait, phone/device centric life we find ourselves.

Thanks for posting this. I love it when we want or try to get real and put out it out there. It’s so refreshing, for we are all connected, kind a like one big cuddle saying β€œyou are seen and heard and it will be okay.” All we need to do is live now, live today.

@Bluzy What I find tricky is how addictions are symptoms of an underlying root cause. If we tackle addiction directly, like abstaining or actively changing our habits we are merely removing the head of a very deep root that can grow back, sometimes sprouting in a different form.

Boredom and the "groundhog effect" of days seemingly being the same in-and-out also has led me back to addiction.

I don't know if this is the solution for others, but shadow work of an internal mapping of my self and the journey of self-love in a show (not just tell) way is what saves me.

I was addicted to weed until it destroyed my sleep. I didn't sleep for two weeks straight. My eyes would roll back into REM, but I couldn't cross the door into unconscious sleep. My body would also twitch into spasms right when I reached the threshold. I was going insane.

As I get older and have my periods that can open up to a relapse, I realize that these vices are just a shortcut to emotions that I am now strong enough to sit through. Our soul gets tired when we follow patterns into same dead ends and repeat mistakes that lead us to the same emotional drowning pools.

If we can sit through our emotions and learn to step back, recover, and make a new attempt with the lesson we just learned from our pain, we have a chance to change our pattern. Be graceful to ourselves because we will not be perfect. We will likely not even be good at the change. But it's how we can get out of the same shit, different day.

We are meant to have new experiences. New beginnings. Looking at things with new childlike wonder. That is how I keep from relapsing.

@Huggycatbear … oh I agree wholeheartedly. Oftentimes though many try to work on the deep stuff while still actively feeding their problem or addiction/compulsion. More power to them if that works. I’ve found most often we have to settle down the addiction with some form of sobriety to be able to do the deeper issue work of why, shadow and integration of the self. I do resonate with how Alan Watts works with addiction: It is worth a listen.
