I do not like to be referred to as "girl." I know the intent behind it and I do not respond to anyone referring to me as that.

Searching for content on the Internet this pretty much sums up what I learned about 26 years ago and why I stopped using the term.
Infantilization and Power Dynamics: Calling adult women "girls" can be a way to diminish their professional authority, competence, or maturity, particularly in workplace settings
From my understanding, this was done on purpose to diminish power, and some women view it very personally. Yet some don’t even know about it. I’ll usually find out someone’s personal pronouns as well as preferences and such in regards to how they want to be addressed.

There's a line somewhere between standing up for, and speaking for... I think when generalizations are included, maybe that's where it becomes problematic. Had you said, "A lot of females over 18 prefer to be called women, not girls", that wouldn't have hit the same way as "please refer to them as women". It felt off coming from a guy, but I think you were genuinely surprised by OP's usage and had totally pure intentions.
