This can be from any age. What Horror movie or stories did you like growing up?

Mine was the whole Phantasm series.

There was a nice old mortician that tried to find a solution to death so he created dimensional gates and crossed through them. What came back was something else. The Tall Man.

He had these floating spheres that would attach itself to people's head and drill, streaming blood out the back lol.

There was an ice cream driver named Reggie and a friend that the Tall Man was after who made weapons like a flamethrower and a quad shotgun by putting two together, all waging to save a world that was getting increasingly post-apocalyptic.

I showed it to my younger generation friend and he was like, "Damn! You guys didn't even care back then."

    I remember liking the original alien when I was little, also enjoyed one of the alien games I got on PC.

    I remember the original Halloween I saw it when I was 10. Nightmare in Elm Street was new in original as well. Just recently I saw the substance in really enjoyed that as well as the bride. Saw was a pretty good new idea for horror as well.

    Growing up some of my favorites were The Exorcist. The Omen. The Shining. Halloween.

    There have been some good recent releases. Here are some I liked that were released in the last year or so. Weapons. Shelby Oaks. Companion. Undertone. Primate. 28 Years Later.

    “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” and the monstrous illustrations were very formative for me in my childhood.

    Horror movies are my ~favorite~ and there have been so many great stories I could never pick just one as the best. I love the classics, but there have been tons of great new ones in the last five years…

    Sinners, Weapons, Bring Her Back, Terrifier series, Long Legs, Infinity Pool, Black Phone, Nope, Barbarian, Speak No Evil, The Menu…

    I could go on for a while 😂

    I think I started watching A Nightmare on Elm Street when I was like 3–4 years old. I was fascinated with Freddy Krueger. The first horror books I ever read were Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Goosebumps. I remember thinking the endings in Goosebumps books and the show were so corny. I used to sneak out of my bedroom at midnight to watch Tales from the Crypt on TV not really for the stories, but just to see the skeleton pop up and laugh hysterically. I still smile and laugh when I picture him. Elvira was mostly for the aesthetics, too. The Silence of the Lambs is still a classic favorite of mine. I still remember watching those alien clown movies, leprechauns, exorcist and the doll ones(Chucky, Annabelle ext). There was one doll movie in Spanish(Vacaciones de Terror) that actually creeped me out. The best part of being bilingual is the exposure I got from both sides. It was pretty normal in Mexican culture back then to scare the lights out of kids so they wouldn’t misbehave or wander off, but it did the opposite for me it sparked my curiosity about the unknown. I grew up with tales of Las Comanches, La Llorona, the chupacabras, duendes, and chanecos. The funny part is my family didn't tell me most of those tells it came from friends or the school taking us to other highschool/college plays to show our heritage lol I use to like watching soft horror shows/movies too like the ones with witches, ghosts, X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I can go on and on 👻

    The original Nightmare on Elm Street is peak scariness. Watching Tina get slashed and rolling on the walls by an invisible Freddy while he cackles... damn! I, too, had a Freddy obsession @Bear and @BellaAine

    I can watch The Menu over and over @TichantoP. Prob one of my all-time favorites. Go into it knowing nothing.

    Iron Lung by youtuber Markiplier. Great for most of it being a submarine in an ocean of blood. Recommend: If you like body horror, cosmic horror, thalassophobia

    True Detective Night Country. First season is still the best. But this one is creepier given it's in all night Alaska.

    Weapons. So good. Come into it knowing nothing.

    Black Phone 2. What did you think of this one? I liked it but I can see some might like the original better.

    Ohh and I really enjoyed Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities, it's nice to see shorter unrelated stories packaged like that, some of them were great, I wished they did more with this format.

    Growing up ****Scary stories to tell in the dark and the sequels**** were a repeat read. Me and my mother constantly made up horror stories together and I’ll never forget one she made up of this guy who would sharpen his pet rats teeth my licking them 😧

    DeathProof by Quentin Tarantino is my all time favorite horror I’ll never forget

    The Skin I’m In, by Pedro Almodovar, is one I’ll also never forget

    Back when I worked for Netflix and DVDs were being rented. I saw so many crazy good movies I can’t remember the titles of.

    The human centipede had me in a chokehold as well 🫢

    @TheDave90 - Tucker and Dale is SO good.

    My favorite horror movies are 'Silent Hill', 'The Conjuring', and 'Th1rt3en Ghosts'. Honorable mentions to 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' if horror comedies count.

    'American Horror Story' if we wanna throw in TV. I'm behind by three seasons, but of the first nine I watched, there wasn't a season I didn't like.

    @Bear Omg all the Reanimators with Herbert West were amazing B-movies.

    My favorite off all time is Donnie Darko. Not straight horror but creepy in parts nontheless.

    Speaking of Lovecraft, Color Out of Space with Nicholas Cage was really fun. Sounds like I need to checkout Reanimator and a few others. Lots of great stuff being recommended here, great post @Huggycatbear

    @WarmChillFella Thank you. Ironically, horror movies is my safe space. I remember being so scared when I was young I had to have a parent come upstairs when I went to the bathroom.

    The Jason and Freddy movies rescued me from taking my imagination so seriously.

    Oh and we can't forget the Poltergeist movies!

    @Huggycatbear haven't watched those Poltergeist movies (that I can recall), more to check out.
    Yep, I don't know what is it about horror movies, I can never watch enough of them, but I find it hard to find ones which are great from start to end, often times I feel they start with a great cast of characters and mystery, but as things unravel, they tend to fall apart, but there's always the classics like the ones mentioned here and other hidden gems. A director I really like recently is Robert Eggers, have yet to watch a bad one from him, I liked a lot the new Nosferatu one he made. I'm also obsessed with the Alien franchise, some are not as good as others, but still enjoyed them on repeat.

    @WarmChillFella I was not familiar with Robert Eggers until you mentioned the new Nosferatu. I absolutely loved that movie in a way where it remains unsettling to me. But also the artistry in sound and cinematography is masterful.

    I found Prince of Darkness to have been the first horror movie to actually scare me. Part of the John Carpenter trilogy, this one exudes a vibe I have never experienced before. While it has cheesy elements, it was a bold take on religion with quantum physics. The two elements worked well together and it is still a cult favorite.

    Unfortunately, if we're doing comfort over normal horror? I'm not gonna go the classic route. Not Aliens. Not Halloween. Not Evil Dead. I cannot decide, so you get three.

    Attack of the Giant Killer Shrews is a good one to mock, honestly. It's nice and hokey. Hell, we have a young James Best (Roscoe P. Coltrane of Dukes of Hazard fame). You will want to start an extremely ill-advised drinking game based off of Best's interesting pronunciation of "Hurricane".

    The classic The Brain That Wouldn't Die but, personally the pervy body ogling/hunting scenes are always so boring for me. So, I will want to fast-forward or talk through those bits. We will be having peanutbutter sandwiches (or alternatives for allergies). We will be calling the head and the lead doctor entitled by the end of the film.

    But, if you're against black and white cheesier than a charcuterie board horror. We'll go with only slightly cheesy horror comedy: Tremors Features: Creatures. Bisexual confusion. And, some neat puppetry.
