I'm just tired with the world right now.
The preview ads for movies have been that long for decades 🤷🏻♀️ I just use that time to chat with whomever I'm with, take a preemptive bathroom break, or look up stuff about the movie on my phone lol
I don't begrudge movie theaters needing to supplement income with advertising - especially given the hit they've taken due to streaming. It's a small price to pay for the experience of getting to see the movie on a large screen and the fuller immersion of senses, imo.
I know, but they have plenty of time before the scheduled start time.
For new releases, it’s about 30 minutes. I think if it’s been around a while it’s about 15 minutes. I just show up after the start time so it’s not so bad.
Homie first time going to the theaters
With $15 for a matinee ticket, $20 for a small popcorn and $12 for a cheap soda it's hardly worth it anymore plus some theaters are so insanely loud it's just not worth the experience anymore
Unpopular opinion but I actually like seeing the previews for other movies 🍿 🤷
Just show up 30 minutes after the posted show time. It's not that big of a deal. Most theaters is all assigned seating now..
My wife and I go to the movies often. We go to AMC and it actually says on the app when you order your tickets that there are 20 minutes of ads and previews before the movie so the movie will start 20 minutes after the start time that’s listed. We don’t care to watch all theaters ads and previews so we base our arrival time 20 minutes after what is listed as the start time.
@Morpheus I didn't know that about the AMC app. Very good to know, thanks!
See the top middle. I think it used to say 20 minutes. It now says 25-30 minutes. We still give it a 20 minute window.
Imagine not being patient enough to sit through trailers for a move and getting so MAD you were about to yell at some teenager working the film room for no reason other than him doing his job.
Yes please stay at home with that behavior. I say this as someone who loves the theater experience.
While I understand yelling at someone won't help, I'm just tired of ads everywhere. It used to be 5 minutes of previews then the movie, at least how I remember it
Unfortunately, invasive advertising is one of the hallmarks of a capitalistic society. It's not going away any time soon without a major societal shift and regulations put in place. There's a reason why a lot of futuristic fiction where capitalism is maintained make a point of excessive advertising as a social commentary. 🤷🏻♀️ I get the fatigue, but on an individual level all we can do is try to tune it out. Heck, even paid streaming which used to pride itself on providing ad-free viewing/listening now includes ads unless you pay even more to remove them.
Movie theaters I don’t mind as much. I do remember when it was just previews but sometime in the 90s they started adding things like ads for Sprite and Nike, etc. I pay premium on YouTube so I won’t get ads especially since a lot of them are obnoxious and you can’t always skip them and they pop up in multiple places throughout the video. I heard car companies like Ford want to start playing ads in your car now.
I agree, I still love previews though. I don’t know why. Sometimes I’ll go down rabbit holes if previews of movies coming out.
But the growing presence of ads in our world has been increasing steadily over the years. And it’s a lot. Even at the gas station (and why are they so loud🙄).
But I just use the time to continue chatting with whoever I’m with, scroll through my phone (and make sure it’s on silent when the time comes).
I don’t get to go to the movies that much due to the cost and time and other life variables. So I try to save it for “big screen events” that make it all worth being there.
An I really the only one who actually enjoys the previews? I always thought it was part of the theater experience. I truly would be upset it they did away with the previews.
I find they’re just really corny and eh
@Huggablesoup I love previews too. But I think the OP talking more about the ads for products before the previews. And sometimes mixed in with them.
I do miss the days when ads were done more as product placements.
@Huggablesoup Yeah, I believe OP was referring to the pre-roll ads, not the previews of upcoming movies. I think the majority of movie theater goers probably enjoy the previews - it's part of the whole experience.
For a while, I have been hesitant to take in a movie at a theatre, but reading this may well have put the nail in the coffin for me. It isn’t just because I’m blind, although that is a contributing factor. As I get older, I’ve become more focused and more sensitive to quality and loudness of sound. The last time I went, 10 years ago, I got impatient with the length of adds, and the sound was just a little overwhelming, not to mention the issues I detected in the balance of frequencies. To give this a fair perspective, I call myself a walking oscilloscope, meaning I can tell fairly precisely which frequencies there are too much or little of. In theatres, this is usually too much upper mid, [2 to 3 khz], too little lower mid, [500 Hz to 1.5 Khz] and too much what people these days call sub bass, [30 to 50 Hz].
@hifigeorge that's understandable. One of my good friends is blind, and she's had better luck with smaller local independent theaters and drive-ins.
I get overstimulated and motion sick in most movie theaters, so I don't go very often anymore, but when I do it's not usually to see a new release. I much prefer watching movies at home where I can control the volume, turn on the closed captions, and not have to worry about shaking cameras.
@hifigeorge I can totally get that. I have had similar, although I’m sure not as intense, experiences in movie theatres. As have my kids cause we’re all a little sensory sensitive. If it’s gonna be a loud on we all just sit in a row alol wearing our giant noise cancelling headsets. 😂
This is actually a point of contention?
My fiancé loves the previews so much we arrive early on purpose so he can watch them. He's so cute LOL
