Obsession and a lesson in boundaries

You may or may not have atleast heard the name of a certain horror movie making the rounds lately. In fact, it's so popular that hundreds of people have already beaten me to the "people are obsessed with this movie" joke. Having seen the movie for myself, I understand the hype. The real horror of Obssession doesn't lie solely in the scares themselves but the mental anguish of understanding the larger implications of what's actually going on as the movie progresses. So this is you're spoiler warning. Skip past the tag if you haven't seen the movie or care about going in blind.

This movie has a tendency to subvert alot of tropes throughout its runtime, one being the classic "be careful what you wish for." However... this is so much worse than a wish gone wrong. It becomes a loss in autonomy for one poor soul in particular. Bear, our "protagonist" takes an item he's led to believe is just a silly novelty toy and uses it to wish his best friend he has a crush on loved him more than "anyone in the f'ing world." Turns out the One Wish Willow works and it's best to pick your words carefully, because ohhh does it give you exactly what you asked for. Problem is for Bear, in order for his friend to love him back in that way, Nikki had to be taken over by something that would love him more than anyone. Horrifyingly, she becomes a passenger in her own body while this wish entity takes her place to spend its every thought on Bear. Now, there's alot of debate at which point specifically he learned what was happening to Nikki. What can't be argued is by a certain point... he definitely knows. By then, his desires matter more to him than doing everything in his power to find a way out for her. Fulfilling his needs are more important than the boundaries of his friend he supposedly cared so much about. In sacrificing her boundaries for himself, he destroyed the lives of four people at minimum. Which brings me to the point of this post.

Unlike the movie, we're not here on this site for romance(hopefully, and if you are, wrong site buddy lol) but many of us came here to fulfill a need. Our reasons will vary, yet, we all are yearning to be touched. The thing to keep in mind is your cuddle buddy isn't some hollow hug machine in devotion to you, they're a person. You may take that at face value or laugh it off as corny, but it's true. Respecting boundaries is so important. Ignoring those boundaries just adds more toxic fumes to the air that suffocate the atmosphere of this community. It brings down the person you were trying to cuddle and ultimately yourself, because in the end, you could be missing out on some amazing connections.

Way may not have magic or the ability to make our wishes come true. Still. The entitlement on display still reigns true in real life. There's nothing inhuman about feeling lonely or wanting more out of life than you have. This isn't to talk down on anyone or shame them for having these feelings. Hopefully that's not the take away here. How those feelings get used, when it becomes an excuse to cross a line, that's where this becomes an issue. A crossed boundary against a caring soul can become their side eye to the next person because, unfortunately, alot of these cases come from someone who also seemed sweet. Someone that seemed harmless until they weren't. It actually makes me worried how many of the guy's I've seen pass through here would use that One Wish Willow on someone if they had the chance. Like I said, this isn't intended to be a lecture. If anything, let it serve as a cautionary tale. How we interact with each other... the actions that we take... are a domino effect. It's important to mindful of how we allow those pieces to fall.

Anyways. Maybe some of you can articulate where I'm coming from here better than I did 😅 or maybe you got a different opinion altogether. Have you seen the movie, and if so, what were your thoughts? Did it live up to the hype it's getting for you? Curious to see what people have to say.

  • I saw it. I had to laugh a little bit of the age old trope be careful what you wish for. Not to mention words have power. I’ve done some work in the past with affirmations. You really have to be careful what you say because your subconscious is at the age of a five-year-old approximately. You can’t say I wanna quit smoking because it’ll pick up on smoking versus what you don’t want. This goes along with My personality in general. I’m very particular with the words I use. Some people do a generalization when they say certain words and then get upset when I question what they mean.

When cuddling with new people, I’m very particular what I say as well so that there’s no confusion when I ask about someone’s boundaries or if I may cut off or move my hand from one part of the body to the other.

The movie was not a big eye opener to me. Been there done that. It was just general entertainment. I guess you could say.

    ….infatuation can be scary.

  • I saw the movie and it was disturbing. And I think being careful what you wish for is relevant in any age. You are right about boundaries though, and for this site to work it needs people willing to have a strong moral compass.

  • The best thing to say is.... "Im smart enough, I'm good enough and doggone it , people like me." Stuart Smalley

  • @Shake Some of the words you used really stood out to me, especially "they're a person" and "entitlement." It's so important for people who become fixated on someone else to remember that we are human beings, and no one is entitled to another person's body, time, or attention.

And yes, I agree that it's a domino effect because many of us become more cautious and guarded after experiences like that. It changes how we move through the world and interact with others.
