Touch Hungry?

An interesting discussion. It sits alongside a couple of other threads underway at the moment....

So, regardless of gender, orientation, ethnicity, a-sexuality or sexual interest, perhaps the common denominator is whether we are "touch hungry" or not? Thoughts?

There are very few opportunities to touch anyone or be touched by anyone unless you go get a massage. What else is there? Women can probably do it more by visiting the beauty salon and getting their hands, feet and hair touched. And I'm sure women friends tend to hold hands and hug more than male friends do. Men have very limited opportunities, and that is reflected in the membership numbers on this site. Other than if you are in a romantic relationship there are virtually no opportunies for touching another person.

  • They wrote an article and didn't consult me? That's how I wound up here. I was crawling out of my skin from having no skin on my skin.

Yeah, it's a real need. I snuggle up with at least three of my nine younger siblings once a week, and I still feel "hungry" mere days later. Living alone's great in some ways (a lot quieter, for one thing), but I do sometimes miss piling onto a couch with eleven other people and watching movies. Even if they were kid's movies I'd already seen three times that day.

  • Skin hunger and touch starvation are very real and important things. I know if you don't get held/affection enough as a baby, you can develop serious mental/detachment issues. I'm pretty sure I got plenty affection as a child, but I am always needing soothing and comforting because of my severe chronic pain and such. The mighty skin hungerrrr! Most beings truly need to be touched. Cuddles have definitely been scientifically proven to be good for one's mental and physical health.
