  • Looks like there is an empty seat behind. Though the front seats are less bumpy. Thus, more suitable for the baby and caregiver. So, I'd give mine up if I am more able. Or, request one of those before me free one or more up.

  • I went with “none”. My reasoning is as follows:

A is responsible for hastening the demise of our species in an altogether boring way. Besides, the child could be used as a seat, or as a flotation device (if the bus careens off a bridge and is plunged into a river or lake).

B is likely to die at any moment. Given their advanced age, this would entail a sort of inward collapse, and a crumbling into dust. This would render the seat unusable by anyone.

    C has a fascist haircut.

D reeks, as is conveyed by the swarm of flies around them. Their getting off the bus would take slightly longer if they had to rise from a seated position.

Well, first we have to consider the concept of "desert." Who deserves what, and why? To deserve something, you have to do something or possess qualities worthy of whatever it is. Who decides what's worth reward or punishment?

Eh... in this particular case, I guess it'd be whoever's reading the cartoon.

So how do you assign worth? The first thing you're going to need is a basic value system: you know, that set of ideas in your head that goes, "These things are 'good'—these things are 'bad'."

Next you're going to have to decide whether "sitting in this seat" is a 'good' thing or a 'bad' thing.

Then you'll need to use your value system on each of the five people in the problem and assign them positive or negative value. Maybe use a scale of -10 to +10 so you can compare values more easily.

After all that, you'll finally be able to decide which person's value most closely matches the value of "sitting in this seat."

The end decision will be purely subjective, though. Every different value system will produce a different person who "deserves" the seat, and the reasoning will be different too. Objectively, nobody deserves the seat. Nobody deserves to stand, either. These are just things that happen.

On an unrelated note, I would get off the train. This is obviously the beginning of the zombie apocalypse and I don't want to be in an enclosed space with Patient Zero.

  • D. Because D is the only one out of the bunch that could threaten to eat my face.

Barring that; no one. Anyone who glares at me for having a seat because I happened to get on a bus first is not getting my damn seat. Either let me choose to get up for you of my own accord or ask me nicely.

(I already do plenty for society, including the elderly, the injured, the disabled, the mentally ill, and the next generation—and though I can’t recall doing any good deeds for the undead lately, I should like to add that there are three other empty seats!)

  • What I would actually do:

Me (to the guy beside me): "Dude! Look a Zombie!"

    Guy (frightened): "A what!"

Me (points towards the zombie): "A FREAKING ZOMBIE! GET UP OR HE'LL FEAST ON YOU!"

The guy bolts up and starts running stumbling over other people.

Me (to B and C): "Mam! Sir! I think we have two empty seats here. Make yourself comfortable."

Get up and go towards the pregnant woman.

    Me: "It’s your turn lady!"

Go to the guy behind my seat.

Me: "According to Rules of Social Ettiquette - You should always give your seat to a pregnant woman."
Stand there and glare at him... Continue staring till he gets up and pregnant lady sits

Three down, one more to go.

Go towards the zombie. Stand beside him with my hands leaning on his shoulder.

Me: "I was dying to meet you."

    Zombie ignores me.

    Wait for the apocalypse.

  • The elderly lady. And that would be my answer even if there weren't usually signs saying it's required. (elderly and handicapped I believe is what I noticed last time I rode our metro)

Hmmm , let’s take a look at these folks:

    A. ? She’s not pregnant that’s not a baby .
She disguised herself with a pillow under her clothes and the baby is a dummy .
Anyone see the old “ I Love Lucy “ episode where she was traveling and disguised a 25# lump of cheese as a baby on a plane ?

    B. An ol battle wagon , doesn’t look mobility impaired even with the cane .

    C. ? That’s the oldest trick in the book . Will you be a defendant in a lawsuit ? Show up limping with crutches . ( ugh ..the idea of suing an injured person !!). “CASE DISMISSED!”

    D. See “c” above . That’s just make-up

Anyhow , I would gladly give up my seat for any cartoon character who came near . They will have to help me up I just had surgery on my knee ,and my heart is not functioning right I’m a little slow , and it would be nice if they held my oxygen bottle for me . Maybe they would like to see my chest tattoo . It says “D N R “
    ( do not resuscitate)

It's a pretty sexist cartoon. It has to be a male businessman occupying the seat. Why not a female businesswoman? And why not a man carrying a baby? There are plenty of single fathers. It's the law on the trains where I live, you have to give up your seat for disabled people or seniors. Even so, in my experience, hardly anyone ever does. Even worse are the people who put their bag on the seat next to them and refuse to move it even when other passengers are standing.

I would give it to the dude with the mask. Reasons are obvious you never know what’s going on in his head. He may end up getting every seat if people aren’t nice.

The Zombie. Then everybody can make a run for it!

I would count to 3, jump up, and watch them fight it out.

  • I have one of those personality types where I try to find a fair compromise. I would consider giving up the seat to the old woman, have her hold the baby, then stand next to and help prop up the injured guy to make sure he doesn't fall over.

  • It depends on who actually wants the seat, honestly. We're purely going off of visually gathered information, and ignoring the possibility of invisible disabilities.

  • @CuddlesInParis - That's not a zombie, that's just someone who had to run for the train in the Phoenix heat. I see them all the time.

I would have them perform different feats of strength and dance to a jaunty tune to see who really wants it the most . Then just as the train is about to stop allow the winner to claim their prize
