Any musicians on the site? (just ignore...I want no more haters, thanks.)

Labelz hoe different is the 8 vs the 12? I am contemplating building or having built an octave bass with a low B so either a 15 string or a 10 (maybe a 6 x 2) but i have never got my hands on a ln 8 to compare them to the 12.
  • Well a 12 is 4x3.. but 2 of the 3 are the same. An 8 is 4x2..so just a single octave. Listen to Pearl Jam's "Jeremy".. Ament's using an 8 on that one. And the dude in King's X uses an 8 string pretty exclusively. More similar to a 12string guitar as far as dynamic. The problem I ran into with my 12 was if I was playing fast, it'd just get too muddy in the mix.
  • I'm actually putting a new nut on my 5 string to string it up E A D G C. Current project, the guitars fill in enough rhythm, i get to be more melodic in my lines. Decided that higher end to compliment the chords was more useful than the low B

Actually both Ament and Pinnick used 12s but Pinnick rarely uses his 12 anymore. I have a 12 so I know what it sounds like i eas trying to figure out how much is lossed in the 8.

I have seen Pinnick with King's X close to a dozen times. 2x this past year great shows
  • To me, the 8 just breathes a lil more. I do love 12's, but in a full band mix, i just found it too heavy and stepping on the spectrum of the other instruments and vocals. I'm all about sonic spectrum in writing and enjoy lil gaps

Interesting. That is kind of what I was thinking. Leading me to a 5 or 6x2 for my next electric. Local luthier is looking into bridges to start the design process.
  • The toughest thing with that, in my opinion, will be using enough wood in the neck, and probably a double truss rod- for longevity of the neck
  • [Deleted User]navyvet76 (deleted user)
Both my 6 strings and my 12 have 2 truss rods.
  • For sure. They better! haha

Dean made a 10 string 5 x 2, but i have very specific ideas i want for pickups and controls I figure building one would be better.
  • I do like Dean's, but agree.. might as well custom build

I plan on if i do a 6x2 using an interesting pickup situation where the bottom 3 sets and top 3 sets have different pickups. Possibly adding a piezo to catch some of all.
  • I used to have a Cort Curbow 6 that had a piezo in the neck. Had a nice sound and great tonal control

Labelz nice idea. I am going to take my time aquiring ideas for pickups and options before the wood is cut. Hardware will come first.
  • Yep. Hardware and type of wood are always my first thoughts

Problem I noticed on 12vers is balancing. The headstock wanting to dive
  • Longer top horn on the body.. should go to 12th fret or so
  • Dear All, I have read through all of the threads and do not understand why Patch interpreted in any way haters in the threads or the site, all of the conversations were about the love of music.
Is there something to be learned from this happening, did he quit because of the blog or was there private messages we can not see.
A shame to loose a talented and loving person who tried to open a interesting conversation.

  • I think it's common for musicians and artists to presume and be swallowed by self doubt. Chances are he's put his music a few places and dealt with the horrible trolls, so jumped to that same conclusion here ahead of the matter.
  • @labetz. Dear Lab. very good point, it is nice to see members joining in and put good idea's forward.
Love to all John. Auckland NZ.
