Decentralizing the Opening Ceremony was cool---having it spread out across Paris instead of just inside a stadium.

The mysterious torchbearer was cool. 'Twas an amalgamation of different characters, as I understand it.

A couple of performances were quite Frenchy, Lady Gag, the Titanic lady, and the French National Anthem lady atop the Grand-Palais. Very good. The rest of the performances were quite forgettable, or downright horrendous.

I like the Winter Olympics better.

Nevertheless, Go Team USA.

    one thing my step dad told me about the Olympics when i asked him about his time at the 88 one in Seoul Korea, " Olympics mean nothing the world games are what matter" , was awesome to finally see an awesome band performing \m/ GOJIRAAAA. I always loved the swimming and cycling events, as well as weight lifting. But winter holds a special place in my heart :).

    I love it when artists shake things up. These performances usually come off like K-Tel Presents. This time they brought the opening ceremony into this century, decade and into the present moment. Serge Gainsbourg is smiling from above.

    Yeeshkabob, I haven't watched the Olympics since I was a kid! We don't have a TV, so I won't be catching any of this, but I'm with those of you who were fond of the Winter Olympics...I always watched the ice skating with my mom and grandma. ⛸️

    I've never seen any Summer Olympics. I guess there would be horse events, so maybe I should do some YouTubing... 🐎

    I always loved Olympic time in my math classroom. We always did the metric system
    Olympics and recreated events and practiced using the metric system to measure. It was really just an excuse to have class outside and run around. The cotton ball shotput and the Q-Tip javelin were two of our events. WOW I haven’t thought about those days in a long time!

    I am really enjoying seeing the parents of all the athletes supporting their kids. Can’t wait to see some more of the surfing and skateboarding and breakdancing!!

    I remember watching the summer Olympics as a kid, and have watched a fair bit of most of them since. It's a pretty nostalgic, enjoyable thing for me. 🙂

    I went to a bunch of the events during the Atlanta games in 1996. Couldn’t afford the gymnastics so we went to the open gym practices on the days before. Saw some baseball, dream team Basketball, a bombing, swimming, and while we were excited to see track and field, we arrived and it was marathon day! So we ended up sitting in the stadium and watching the runners on the big screen. 2.5 hours later we saw them come in and run the final lap and finish! Let’s see what else…boxing was intense and so was just walking around worlds fair park and people watching! So glad I got to experience the Olympics firsthand and I would love to be in Paris right now!

    The only thing that has really stood out to me so far is that the women gymnasts appear to be older (on average) than most previous year Olympics that I can remember. The first Games that I really remember paying attention to was 1984 with Mary Lou Retton ... she was, what, 16? And most of the other gymnasts then were in their teens as well.

    This year, I was seeing ages more around 20-21. Probably a good thing for the health of the competitors.

    @Jubal Whoa…I was impressed by the French swimmer who won two individual gold medals in 118 minutes. No one has ever done that. Not even Michael Phelps.

    Ok, this guy is amazing. No special equipment, no special training, just good old-school hand-eye coordination.

    Silver medal to Turkey! Congrats!!

    My heart goes out to 25-year old female Italian boxer, Angela Carini, who was paired unjustly in her competition.

    She quit just 45 seconds into her match. She said she had never been punched so hard in her career. "It's not right," she told her coach.

    The Olympics isn't "about us", Americans. It began in Ancient Greece.

    The original Olympics began in 776 B.C. in ancient Greece. They occurred every four years until 395 A.D.

    The Olympic Games returned in 1896, the Games of the I Olympiad, and marked the beginning of the modern day Olympic Games in Greece.

    The five rings represent the five inhabited continents: Africa, the Americas (North and South), Asia, Europe, and Oceania (the various islands in the south and central Pacific Ocean).

    So, no, it's not at all just "about us."

    The whole thing about the italian woman boxer who had to try to box the ex-male boxer made me feel sad for her. Her dreams were broken. I'm 1,000% for LBTBQ rights and all that but safety is a totally different issue.

    Olympics are nothing but a publicity stunt at the expense of the athletes, there's a reason I stopped watching them years ago. Just not what it used to be and it's a damn shame. Not even gonna comment on that joke of a boxing match. Well I guess I kinda just did.

    @RockRollCuddle Yes I did know all that and it’s not that much of a deep dive. They cover it at every Olympics before and during the opening ceremony. It’s also in sports books and the first time I heard about it was in 1968 watching the Mexico City Olympics. If you study Ancient Greece at all you will read about it too. This is Sports 101.

    But the main point was I tagged someone else regarding something completely different. The history is immaterial to what I was discussing with someone else. And if you must know, there is a history of said Captain being disingenuous. But you are right, @RockRollCuddle I probably shouldn’t have said it. But I meant it and I own it.
