I'm not smart enough

edited August 2025 in General

Sorry to say i am on the high functioning side of ASD and I'm not smart enough. I mean well and I do my best. I've noticed I'm not the only one with ASD or potentially with it but intellect varies with each person.

Comments

  • @Rocket_Man, what is it you believe you’re not smart enough to do or be?

  • @Rocket_Man You are smart enough to recognize something you feel inadequate about and vulnerable enough to admit it. That is a mighty high emotional IQ act.

Intelligence is multi-faceted. Give yourself credit where credit is due.

  • I'm sure you're just fine in intelligence , there are so many variations when it comes to smarts. I also feel it's not fair that there are people who believe folks on the spectrum have some kind of super powers and are on another intellectual level. All that does is set up a false sense of realistic expectations.

  • @Rocket_Man smart enough for what ?

  • @Bear than a sixth grader. Sadly none of us are.

  • @TheFunCartel my dad didn’t get an education higher than 6th grade. He did alright by me. Most people act emotionally like 8 yr olds I’ve noticed.

    @Rocket_Man yours fine.

  • 😕I'm high functioning AuADHD and I don't feel high functioning. I struggle A LOT. I actually spent the afternoon in bed beating myself up about it as well. Everyone is a genius but you can't judge a fish by its ability to ride a bike. We aren't all cut out for the same things.

  • Also AuDHD. It's generally regarded that I'm a genius and an idiot. All depends on the context.

That was a problem for me too from a young age. Everyone always telling me how intelligent I was and it felt like a lot of pressure I couldn't live up to.

I was in a narrow way. I was reading by 3 years old and usually a top 2 in spelling in school but I couldn't keep up with the kids in school in all the other ways I had too. It's ok though I'm getting help and I wish everyone the best

  • Does it ever upset you when people tell you you're smart? It makes me want to cry.

  • Former Gifted Kid costume: dress in ordinary clothes. When people ask "What are you supposed to be?" you reply "I was supposed to be a lot of things."

@ladybug7 ooof, right in the feels 😞

I am quantitatively pretty far beyond most people's threshold for 'smart'

I'm also ASD and hyperaware of every shortcoming, miniscule or gigantic

I wanna come back with "yeah, and I make really crappy choices, and struggle with basic life necessities, and am underutilized in a blue collar job. Smart only makes me more aware of everywhere I'm failing, everything I could have been"

Just... sad and powerless and frustrated

@IronLemon we were ALL supposed to be a lot of things. Why was it that happy never made that list ...?

@Rocket_Man it's all very well to say that, but what if you're wrong?

Time and time and time again I've seen people say, "I can't do that" and then with the lightest and most loving boot up their arse they do it just fine. Almost everybody I've ever encountered who has said "I'm not smart enough" has been stone dead wrong. (The one or two exceptions were in specific circumstances.)

This is unsurprising, since as a matter of logic if you say "I'm not smart enough" and you really aren't smart enough, then you have made a correct observation and deduction which means you are smart enough, at least for that. And if you're wrong, well then by definition you are smart enough.

Maybe you are and maybe you aren't smart enough, but being smart is overrated. All the smart people got the world where it is today with climate change and wars and pollution. Being kind and loving and willing to learn is far more important in my book.

not cool. keep those comments to yourself. - Stormy

  • @CuddleMeister00 ((NAILED IT!!)) We take NOTHING "of earth" with us when we die, therefore things of this earth don't matter. What DOES matter is who we are, how we treat others, and the lasting effect that has after we're gone. SMART people recognize that!

  • Learned long ago every single person I meet could teach me something. Even if it's only their favorite food, I still learned something.

Some of the most educated people I know are dumb as shit street/life wise. Some of the richest people I know dropped out of grade school.

    Intelligence is wild.

  • @CuddleDuncan with people who are neurodivergent and struggle... They literally don't have dopamine to complete the task they are telling you they can't do. You say a boot in the arse is the remedy but I'm going to tell you it's 1. Believe them. 2. Accommodate what they ask for to help complete said task. That's the loving boot. Simple as that. We don't function with negative reinforcement, we shut down. Encouragement is massive.

@jintx well at least we aren't alone. I feel isolated because people act like I'm snobby because I'm "smart". I really love learning everything from new people and the FURTHEST thing from a snob. I don't feel smart ever but I also know that most people around me might not be able to keep up with me in some subjects... that's okay that's why we need each other. everything you said was so totally spot on. Definitely in the feels. 🫶
