Parental Advice

For reasons we won't go into here, I don't have parents in my life and haven't for many years. As such, I have missed out on the little pearls of wisdom that parents share with their kids, and am still learning as I go.

I'll share a couple of things I learned recently to get us started:

  • Don't accept criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice
  • Keep an emergency bag in your car, especially in winter and on longer trips.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth
  • When tidying up, use the TIO method- Touch It Once. Don't keep moving it around.

So, forumites, what advice do you think is too good to keep to yourself? What did your parents teach you that you want to pass on?
Can be life hacks, affirmations, stuff that seems obvious but might not be obvious to everyone.

  • Go on a walk every day

Make sure you get sunlight in the morning

Take time to look at the horizon everyday. Soften your gaze so that you can see a very wide distance. See if you can see parts of yourself within your visual frame.

    Take time to breathe

    Keep going forward

  • As soon as you get out of bed make your bed! That way you will have stared the day doing somthing productive! 😀

Always do your best. If you've done your best, then no matter how badly it's gone you can hold your head high: because you did the best you can do.

    Aim high.

Edit: Also, never piss into the wind.

  • And never piss on your friend

  • Unless they were just stung by a jellyfish. Then it’s OK

  • @Importance there could be other non medical reasons someone may want that but we won’t go into it here lol

  • @Importance What the? I wish someone had told me that sooner. No wonder all my friends are pissed off.

  • @hugonehugall oh yes. I’m dead... Thank you for that funny thought

  • Cut once, measure twice.

@Importance I'm not sure if you're joking, but the peeing on a jellyfish sting thing is a myth. I swear, someone was just like 'oh, Bob's been stung by a jellyfish, I'm going to make his day EVEN WORSE'

  • I didn’t know if it was the truth or not, honestly but I was just trying to be funny

Not to self: don't piss on someone's parade 😊👍🏻

  • It's not true. In many cases it's actively harmful.

  • I need new parents! They never told me about jellyfish and piss. 🦧🦧🦧🦧

  • Never quit your job till you have found another one .👍

  • My dad had a saying - "hasten slowly".

    @BuggleBear

    Don't spit into the wind,
Don't take the mask off that old lone ranger,
    Don't mess around with Jim.

  • Don't agro the quiet ones, when they snap they go HARD!!!!

Never start the fight but never be afraid to finish it.

Expect the worst, but hope for the best this way you are always prepared when things go sideways and pleasantly surprised when they work out.

Never waste time on those who don't show you the basic respect you deserve.

It's ok to take time to fall apart and be a blubbery mess when you need to, but always pick up and carry on when you're done. This is not being weak it is required self maintenance.

    Asking for help/support is OKAY!!!

Things I wish my parents had told me^^^

  • Look both ways before crossing the street (it amazes me how many people of all ages obliviously walk into traffic like they are Superman).

    • Your rent should never cost more than half your salary. One third, if you can help it.

    • Exfoliate your skin before you shave to reduce your chances of knicking yourself

    • If you wait for the perfect moment, you'll be waiting forever

    • It's okay to leave an uncomfortable situation. It's more important for you to be safe than it is for you to be polite

    • Clean the filter on your washing machine. (You're supposed to do it once a month but I do it maybe twice a year)

    • Another washing hack, if you use some distilled vinegar with your detergent, it's supposed to help the colors last longer. And as an added bonus, your clothes won't spoil if you accidentally forget about them for a day. (I can't confirm or deny the first part, but the second part is definitely true.) Vinegar discourages the growth of bacteria, which may also be why I can get away with cleaning my filter only a couple times a year.

    • I like to rub toothpaste on my teeth, floss, then brush my teeth in that order so that the toothpaste gets in between.

And that's all I can think of for now. ☺️

Don’t believe anything you read on a forum... 😂

  • @barto first time I’ve seen you post!

I never follow my parents' advice, but uh... I guess it would be good for anyone who wants a lot of excitement in their life. Most of it boils down to this:

"When you're faced with a decision, big or small, choose the option that is easy, fun, convenient, and/or that immediately satisfies an impulse. Don't worry about the consequences, you can deal with those later."

YMMV. If that's your jam, have fun, lol :joy:

  • Finger foods are fun and educational

    Don't cry over spilt milk

    Question authority

Always keep $20 hidden in your wallet (would now be $40)

If carrying a defense weapon, be sure it has a leather wrist strap

    Stab with an upward thrust

Don't act like you know everything, because you don't and neither does anyone else

Don't take the lord's name in vein in public. Just because it doesn't bother you, doesn't mean it's not highly offensive to others

Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Stop hating yourself for everything you aren't and start loving yourself for everything you already are.

If at first you don't succeed then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

When walking with a friend, make sure your valuables are between the two of you.

Always consider that others more important than you.

Never eat the last_____ when with others.

Yesterday never was and tomorrow never will be, so make today as wonderful as you can for yourself and others.

@Mmart should I also not tug on Superman's cape?

@EarthlyAngel003 the toothpaste tip is genius, I never would have thought of that. Same for the vinegar thing!

@squeakytoy I'm not sure what YMMV means?

  • Don't sweat the small stuff.
    Life is beautiful.

Those are two gems from my dad.

What I say to my daughter: Follow your heart, do you what you love, there's plenty of time.

  • [Deleted User]DeadGirlWalking (deleted user)

This is great advice everyone! Thank you for your input- keep them coming ❤️

  • I had some good and bad from my parents.

If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

If you ever wear a skirt too short, I will staple it to your ass.

Don’t ever rely on a man. Sustain yourself.
(My mom was very unjustly hateful towards men)
