Excercise

I'm curious what you guys and gals do to stay healthy.

I used to dread working out until I discovered boxing. While working out, I'm also developing a skill and the workout can be as intense and technical, or dynamic and playful as I want.

There is a lot of technique to boxing, in terms of power generation, weight distribution and movement.

There is also an extremely playful aspect to it, as a lot of it is about deceiving your opponent and moving your weight around. Good boxers are like ballerinas; intimately aware of how their weight is distributed and balanced between their legs, and when they move, they move in a way where each hop places you in another balanced position.

This really has kept me coming back and kept me from getting bored.

To the point that I look forward to it rather than dreading it.

I got proper training in a legit old school boxing gym for about four years, which taught me the technique.

My gym is gone, so I do my workouts now in a local mma gym. The teachers aren't pure boxers but it's good enough as I've already developed a good foundation.

Anyway, that's how I stay healthy. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

  • Exercise outside you sweat more, do free weights. Don't join a gym it's a waste of money. Drink water. Eat bake chicken, fish, shrimp, veggies and fruit. Protein shakes to relieve your muscles. Jog and walk do 3-5 times a week. You will shed pounds fast. It will make you feel better, look better, more dates, probably more mutual cuddles. Shop where you want as far as clothes

I stay in shape (or lack thereof, lol) by speed walking, and not driving. I drink water and eliminate soft drinks from my house including juice. I don't cut foods out, simply because I don't believe in that, but I do let things naturally fall out of my diet that aren't necessary, like meat or eggs and most forms of dairy. There's enough recipes and alternatives out there that I just don't need the extra stuff.

I used to attend Zumba classes, and we used to have a Springfree at my family's home. Dancing and trampolining are probably my favourite forms of cardio. Trampolining can get your heart rate up better than a run can. I'm thinking now that I'll be on an 8-4 work schedule, I'll take up Zumba again. Zumba is the only reason I'd pursue a gym membership. I really miss it (minus the cliquey in-group ladies and instructors that can come with it).

  • Does walking to the fridge to get a doughnut count?

  • @Gary whoah whoah. donuts don't go in the fridge man. they have to be eaten fresh and warm. if they're old enough that they need to be refrigerated then you might as well just throw them away.

i know grocery stores sell those weird ones the last forever, but those things are an insult to donuts.

  • Hey, I love those little $2.50 packs of grocery store bakery section donuts! (when I'm inebriated)

  • I try to once a week do one of each: swimming, free weights, road bike and yoga.
I'm in Brazil resolving a few personal things, but went to the farm today and did some horseback riding... it's amazing the way you feel when you do an exercise totally different from the usual routine...!

  • Balance nutrition and self discipline.

    Burpee Thursdays twice a month.

If I have not done a lot of physical activity I'm not going to eat for the sake of eating. Now if I am hungry, I'll get to the root of it via self inventory.

  • I try to walk/jog with the Leslie Sansone program four to five times a week and occasionally add resistance bands, sometimes I'll do one of those full body workouts with resistance bands, but, some weeks I'm exhausted so 5 days out of seven becomes difficult and I pull back, I'm also a single mom with a full time job. I try to drink a lot of water but I am having a passionate affair with coffee, try to eat lean meat and enough veggies(funny rabbit trail story, I tried the vegan bit for six months back in 2013 and made myself anemic, it took almost two years to recover and I realized recently I don't eat nearly enough fat and that's why I was having such awful brain fog). Health is hard, I have a chronic neurological condition also which impacts my energy all around.

  • I live on lots of land and get exercise walking around and taking down low hanging branches and carrying them into the gully to act as a barrier or to the burn pile. @MalikN Burpees only twice a month? That's weak sauce! haha 100 burpees, 100 crunches and 100 pushups everyday and throw in some P90X also. I'm a retired Marine so I am sick like that. lol

  • @Gary - of course it counts! 😊

  • My job is physically demanding, so that's where I get most of my exercise. I do walk, too when I want to do additional exercise. 😊

I have found my attitude is better when I exercise first thing in the morning. Less depression, more energy, I sleep better. And if I don't everybody first thing, I try to find 30 minutes in the day where I can do something intentional, even if it just a walk. If I know my schedule won't allow an intentional exercise, I work sorry ones into my day (3 push ups after every door painted, plank after every room done, etc.)
My morning exercise usually consists of walking 1.5-2 miles, biking or swimming 30-45 minutes, and weight training/lifting 30-45 minutes. I try to drink a gallon of water a day and avoid sodas. Eat balanced, but allow myself 1 meal or day a week where I don't pay any attention to my intake. (It's makes the rest of the week's controlled eating more bearable if I have a reward somewhere.)
This has worked for me this year as I have lost 65 lbs since January. (284 to 219).
    Goals: 200 by Christmas
    Start running in 2022
Target goal of 160 by May when I will run a local 5k.

Thanks for the post. I needed the mental refocus.

Edit: And a 90 minute deep tissue massage every week. So many reasons...

  • I predominantly do dancing and martial arts to stay fit. It makes such a difference to energy levels. I used to get up really early and go and train Kung fu in the woods by my house and it was great. Exercising in nature is fab! I need to get back into that.

I have a bit of a chocolate addiction but I try and control it!!

  • I just moved downtown to the center of my city. There's lots of places to walk to from here, and that has helped me a lot. Also, I'm on the sixth floor of my building, and I try to use the stairs at least once a day.

  • I try to do free weights 2 to 3 times a week. In my building, I take the stairs instead of the elevator.

I put on some music and dance around my apartment.

I do planks every other day. I do push-ups every single day. I do wall sits. You just need a wall.

When I am outside, I take long walks, especially when it is nice outside.

There are many ways to exercise.

  • Good for you. Sounds like you get a mental/emotional release from it as well.

  • This is inspiring. Thank you for posting. Yes to kickboxing=power!

@creedhands morning workouts seem to be the way to go

  • Biking to work is my choice exercise

  • Awesome thread! I used to train kickboxing, jui-jitsu, and wrestling for years, have transitioned to rock climbing, slack lining, as well as hiking, kayaking and occasional workouts or gym visits with friends. Enjoy yoga in the mornings though this seems to be as much a mental boost as a physical one.

  • To stay healthy, I take my prescribed medications, visit doctors and specialists for scheduled check-ups, try to eat healthy (fruits and vegetables) and avoid excess sugar, salt and meat. I always wear my seatbelt when I drive and insist my passengers do the same. Most of my exercise is either walking or gardening.

I’m enjoying hearing about everyone’s healthy choices. I like step & strength class 3x a week. This thread reminds me that it’s now dark enough to walk my dog under the starts and moon in the woods without pushing bedtime later. That’s the serenity part of movement I enjoy. Plus the occasional heart-beating-fast with strange noises in the dark forest…good for a cardio function test.

I focus on trail running & weighted rucking (those familiar with Tim Ferriss may know rucking with a GORUCK backpack is a new obsession of his), outdoor bootcamp workouts with a local group, and pull ups & sandbag exercises in my garage. I also have a whole collection of great Yoga With Adrienne videos bookmarked on YouTube but I’m still working to consistently do those.

I love walking, dancing, swimming, and sometimes the gym.
    But mostly the former 3.

I lost weight during the beginning of the virus outbreak who's name I won't mention.

Entered a state of chronic anxiety and depression. Gained weight. Healed. And am now losing again and feeling healthier.

  • Starting with the pandemic, where I was cooking/baking up a storm, I started increasing my workouts and workout types and have dropped... roughly 10 pounds. And kept it off. I need a belt for all my pants, and shorts. Yeah, a nice problem to have.

Variety is everything to me, so pick from the following on any given day/season:

    • Tai chi long and short form, or staff exercises, fall and winter, only.
    • Core/freeweights/pushups, 30 mins, 3-5 times a week, any season.
    • Jog (and cry) for 5-10 minutes (I spend more time crying about jogging than jogging), once a month, any season.
    • Bike 60-120 minutes, depending on heat of the day/weather, once or twice a week.
    • Beat Saber on hard mode, plus faster song setting, 35-40 minutes, 3-5 times a week, any season.
    • Swim 20-25 laps, every other day, summers only.
    • Yoga, 30 mins, any season.
  • During Covid I discovered a friend in nature by hiking. I've done yoga since the sixties which is my religion as well. But I cycle, run, weights, swim in addition. I also get massaged hard and spa. I own a Zaaz platform which I stretch and workout on too.

  • Wonderful to hear everyone’s experiences! For me, I rock climb at least five days a week sometimes six if I can get outside on real rock.
I used to lift at a gym but I found the culture a bit off putting and not really my speed. Climbing is a very inclusive sport and 9 out of 10 people are pretty dang cool. Plus I find it fun and have become stronger so there’s that.
I do yoga here and there but not consistently. More just when I feel tight or need to unwind after a long day.

  • It doesn’t matter what activity I do, being physically active just isn’t pleasant to me except for a nice walk in ideal weather but I rarely manage to get going on time.

  • Im not on board with the "don't join a gym" . The gym is my church and routine. I wake up before 4:30 am daily and I am at the gym by 5 when it opens. But I understand that Different things work for different peeps. The key is to just do something. walk, bike, sit ups and pushups etc. anything to get active and move.

  • All exercise is unpleasant. It offers only pain, unburdened by the taint of other sensations.

  • I joined the gym a year ago. It motivates me to get there and make the time to do it. I do think if I didn’t have that, it would be more difficult to stay motivated. I do the weight machines and stair master. I can burn more calories in half the time of a treadmill. Always have a towel nearby.
