What do you like to eat for breakfast?

edited February 2022 in General

I’ve always had trouble with breakfast. I grew up with the common practice of having cold cereal and milk for breakfast. Later, as a young hippie chick, it became granola and milk. Over time I’ve followed different routines. When I worked in construction I had a pretty hearty breakfast, usually scrambled tofu (because I wasn’t crazy about eggs) and rice. On and off I’ve had protein shakes. There have been lots of times that I did not have “breakfast food” for breakfast and, instead, would have leftovers for breakfast (pizza - it’s not just for breakfast any more!). Long before breakfast burritos became common I had bean or scrambled egg burritos for breakfast. More recently yogurt has been a common choice. Often it’s a piece of cheese, a piece of fruit, and a piece of some breadlike thing. (“Like an Italian!” my Italian cousin exclaimed.) But the fact of the matter is that breakfast has always problematic for me. I don’t feel like eating when I get up though I function better if I get some protein at breakfast. Often I just don’t eat until about 2 p.m. and that doesn’t necessarily work well for me. I’m 69 years old and still haven’t figured out what is a good routine for me at breakfast. I don’t face this dilemma with other meals.

So, what’s YOUR breakfast routine? Maybe I’ll get some inspiration.

Not routine, but the two breakfasts I remember most were:

Smoked salmon and oatcakes in an eastbound lay-by on the A85 just outside Crianlarich. (I don't think the lay-by is that important, I'm sure any lay-by on the A85 would do.)

A 'Catalan Breakfast' on a rooftop terrace in Barcelona: black coffee, orange juice, toast, softly scrambled eggs, a lightly spiced local sausage and a glass of rioja.

Cereal and milk, for the regular. Yugh. But functional.

Eating right after waking up always gives me a stomach ache. So I gave up on breakfast a long time ago. Now days I just eat when I'm hungry.

I have a weird sleep routine, so often am awake until around 5am, then sleep until midday, when I'll have my breakfast, which is usually not a traditional breakfast food. Since being diagnosed as diabetic I've tried to have something that won't cause a glucose spike, so wholewheat toast with a smear of butter, or a pot of microwave porridge. Sometimes I'll have a microwave rice pouch with a can of tuna if I feel like having 'lunch' type foods, or I'll have a couple of slices of turkey or beef, a piece of cheese, some houmous and some tomatoes, raw carrots and cucumbers. I usually try to have some fruits and veggies with breakfast too, usually some grapes or berries (rasp, straw or blue) and maybe some dried raisins, cranberries or tropical mix with banana chips, dried papaya, coconut and flame raisins and some yogurt. I tend to eat small portions of lots of different things through the day, and 'graze' rather than having big meals. I'd say I maybe eat every two hours or so, a small bowl of whatever I'm having, up to six meals a day, and I find that I can manage my blood sugar a lot better by doing that than having three bigger meals. Basically, I eat what I feel my body needs, when I feel it needs it, and I'm a lot happier, more alert, I have more energy, my skin is a lot better and I feel generally more 'well'.

  • I always down a couple cups worth of water when I wake up. On a normal day I'll quickly prepare myself a pair of buttered toast before I leave, then I might have a breakfast sandwich when I get to work. Love our crossiants! If I'm not in a hurry, I'll have a bowl of cereal.

On those rare occasions, can never go wrong with scrambled eggs and bacon. Every weekend I enjoy ordering from ihop. Love getting their breakfast brunch sandwich with a side of two pancakes and a lovely milkshake to wash it all down. 😊

I really like to smothee so I get the nutrients but it's not a whole meal that leaves me with a lot of dishes.

I'm raw/vegan and the only routine I use is an app called "The Daily Dozen." I check off whatever food groups I eat in the morning and it makes my eating throughout the day more clear. I'm 67, have zero meds, zero health issues and I'm the same size I was in high school. I eat all I want.

  • Ah yeah Gregor or however you spell it. I should look at that list.

I eat when I am hungry. Sometimes it's curry, sometimes chili. Maybe pasta or pizza. Whatever I happen to feel like and is doable. Sometimes it's right away, sometimes I am awake for ten hours before I eat. Really I have no routine as to what or when.

  • Weirdly a tall glass of water is what I need then hour or two later a snack maybe. If I have buddy then I’m binging😋 on cuddles🤗

Over-easy egg, with jam and butter on 2 toasts. Chai or Coffee based on mood. Every single day!

  • Two eggs over easy and scrapple

  • @JoyfulHeart - what is scrapple?

All - these are fun, inspiring, and validating that I’m not the only one who has a less than conventional relationship with breakfast.

  • @Babichev Scrapple is a Lancaster, PA thing that we have courtesy of the Amish. It's made from scraps of pork meat finely ground, (usually the trimmings), cornmeal, and spices. It's formed into a loaf, cut into slices and fried. I like it because it sticks to the ribs.

  • I usually do a blend using Garden of Life Raw Meal, sometimes it's accompanied with whole wheat sandwich with peanut butter and cheese.

  • @JoyfulHeart - that sounds interesting. I’ll have to try it some time.

@JoyfulHeart Scrapple sounds like what we call haslet in the UK (pronounced haste-lut) but it's boiled in a muslin bag, then removed and baked to finish, then cooled and eaten cold. It's nice, sort of like a loaf of herby cold sausage.

  • @Babichev If I think of it, I can bring some to STL in May. Spencer's Grill serves something they call scrapple, but it's quite different from what we have here.

  • Strawberry banana smoothie from the blender

I have a rotation system among three breakfasts.
1.Cereal (which one varies) with cold milk (always skim), sometimes I add berries
2.Oatmeal (usually brown sugar/maple flavour) with either raisins, fresh/frozen berries or a sliced banana
3.Belgian waffle with fresh/frozen berries (blueberries, blackcurrants or strawberries) and real maple syrup
Each one is accompanied by hot tea and afterwards I have either a blueberry scone or a pecan whirl.
As I'm waking up in the morning, I'm thinking which breakfast is next in rotation.

  • Savory (Oat)meal. 🥣 hear me out!

Many think of oatmeal with fruit or brown sugar/milk or something of the sort

Oats are such a versatile grain! I really enjoy how oatmeal makes me feel, full enough all day with lots of energy! I typically will use low/no sodium chicken broth/vegetable broth and water. I cook as usual, then I make egg whites, sauté some kale, cut up some tomatoes add spices and make a beautiful breakfast bowl. Some may call me a perfectionist or strange, but don’t knock it until you try it! 😍

  • @SnshineScarlett That looks yummy and healthy both!

  • I’m vegan so breakfast food is really different compared to typical breakfast food. Air fried tempeh on sour dough bread with yumm sauce is my go-to breakfast.

  • I tend to save my larger breakfasts for the weekend

  • The still-beating heart of a horse, so that I can gain its strength and fleetness.

    Oatmeal and toast, usually.

  • Thank you so much @JoyfulHeart !! 🙌🙌

    @Morpheus, whatcha got there?

  • I get up and cook breakfast almost every single day. I almost always have iced coffee, a piece of bacon or sausage, one egg over medium, and a half a piece of whole grain toast. Sometimes I make it into a sandwich with cheddar cheese and jalapeños.
