Friendly touch

Yesterday I had an amazing experience. I was having breakfast at a Cracker Barrel before a fight, and I had the friendliest waitress. She was friendly and personable, but she also would touch my arm or shoulder every time she came to the table to check on me.

It felt like a mini cuddle, every time. It felt warm, even if it was quick.

Yes! I always love those interactions - or when the cashier puts her hand under yours, when she's giving back your change! I'll sometimes even stand in a longer line at the checkout, if I see there's a cashier that does that, just to experience the feeling & connection!

Anyone else really enjoy things like haircuts and chiropractor appointments because of the touch element? It seems kinda silly but with no one to cuddle with, those appointments always brighten my day.

  • I had a client years ago who recanted touching someone's hand when they handed them a to-go cup which was the only touch they received in a long while. I know it didn't feel like a mini cuddle for them, but, it was touch. Touch from another can help us to feel alive and as if we are apart of something.

So beautiful to hear you experienced such connection.

  • I personally don’t like being touched in situations where people are trying to be friendly when the expectation is that I won’t be touched like by a server in a restaurant. I don’t care that they think they’re being friendly.

Pre-Covid I was in a grocery store and this woman was selling lotion in a really aggressive way. She just said, “open your hand.” I did and without warning she had lotion in my hand and was massaging it in. I hate the way most lotions feel on my hands and this one was extra gross. It was small a violation and it made me unhappy.

Consent is always important. Everyone is different.

  • I hate to say it but I am one of those people that touches people all the time. My coworkers used to say, you always have to have your hands on somebody. Mainly it was old people at the nursing home. But I love a light touch on the shoulder when I have an interaction with someone that makes me feel loved. I just don’t like men putting their hands my hips.

I wore my free hugs T-shirt on the beach and I got to hug quite a few people. I always ask them if they need a hug though. Some people say no. That’s never going to be me. In a touch deprived world those little light touches are so kind.

  • I had an Asian man give me a pedicure once and he was so loving with my feet and how he cared for them I cried through the whole thing. It was kind of embarrassing but I couldn’t help it I felt so loved by a total stranger. I tried to thank him but he didn’t speak English but with my smile I hope I got it across to him I gave him a $10 tip. On a $35 foot massage. I wish I would have taken a picture of him and got his card and follow him everywhere.

    Yes. Those moments are gems.

  • Touch is definitely so under rated in our society…..leaving so many touch deprived.

  • Once, years ago, I was extremely foolish and got drunk alone. I could have been taken advantage of, but instead, these two wonderful men from the tire store came to my rescue. One got me food and the other held his arm around me so protectively and tightly, and kept telling me I was safe. It was incredible. I can never forget how amazing it felt to be held so tight and reassured that everything would be okay, by a complete stranger who could have reacted so differently.

Personally I am a big fan of platonic touch with friends and family, but I don’t usually want to be touched by a stranger in public. And I don’t mean meeting someone for the first time or receiving a service like a pedicure, more like when someone touches me to ask me to move. I am almost always the first person to reach out for a touch on the harm or a hug with loved ones, new friends and of course my clients.

I think I get this habit from my dad, who is also a very touchy feely person, but he has gotten in trouble for it before by someone who took it the wrong way. It hurt him to know that he’d made someone uncomfortable when he thought he was just being friendly. So, I think one must be cautious when initiating touch. Either established trust with the person, or make sure they consent.
