What are you passionate about?

edited July 2022 in General

I'm curious what people here are passionate about. If you'd like, share something interesting about your subject and perhaps why it interests you so much?

One of the things i'm passionate about is boxing.

It started as a purely practical thing, growing up in a rough neighborhood and having to be able to defend myself. I taught myself the basics.

But, as I learned more about it, I started to love the science behind it.

Mohammed Ali was an idol, because he was a Muslim like me (as a kid, these similarities really matter) and his personality was so badass and fearless. As a kid, he was the only positive representation of Muslims in western media that was around.

Bruce Lee was also fascinating because I grew up watching his movies. As I learned more about him, I was in awe of his ability to quickly generate explosive power through the physics of his body. He perfected the one inch punch. (I don't know how he would fare against a peak MMA fighter today, though)

Now days, I train about four days a week. The training is centered around endurance and generating power. I've been working on the art of creating power through the way that weight is distributed on your feet, the twisting of the hips, the rapid movement through the core, the relaxation of muscles until reaching a target, and finally acceleration through the target.

I've been doing this off an on for almost 18 years.

I'm not interested in using these skills on another person, but just the science and art of what your body is capable of through disciplined and rigorous training.

Some of the other things i'm passionate about are math, physics, meditation, engineering, art, human space exploration and neuroplasticity. But more on that later.

I'll add that between the consistent and disciplined approach to the physical training and meditation, I sometimes feel like living like some kind of urban modern version of a monk.

Also passionate about human space exploration! additionally general technological advancement, the pursuit of truth, mythology, introspection, the environment, the pursuit of meaningful relationships with others, and the adorableness of cats.

Think that the kind of training you're describing is a pretty great thing, the exploration of the self and discipline through things like that are rather noble I believe.

I enjoy boxing too I was initially skeptical thinking its was just sparring or competing but its been a fun experience with exercise drills. So far its been the best decision for me

  • Engineering and research. Especially in the field I'm working in.

  • Chinese Martial Arts, any combat sport (1. Boxing 2. MMA 3. Kickboxing 4. Brazilian Jiu jitsu/judo/wrestling), chess, philosophy, Latin Dancing, and sociology.

I'm gonna let you finish, but Terrence Crawford is the best boxer in the game now.

I'm passionate about helping at risk youth. Theirs a rescue that I volunteer at that introduces high risk youth to rescued animals. These animals came from awful situations, they were abused and some were set to be slaughtered. These animals have every reason to give up and distrust humans and yet they're the most affectionate and loving animals.

When I tell a kid an animals story and how the odds were against them, I watch as their face lights up and how they immediately feel a connection with the animal. They not only relate, they start opening up about their feelings. I met a 7 year old last week that told me he has dreams about helping all the hurt people and animals in the world. That he's a survivor, just like them. This little boy wouldn't even make eye contact with me at the beginning of our tour and by the end he was holding my hand.

I didn't intend for this to come across so sad. 😜 It's really an amazing and magical feeling to watch and be apart of.

  • @SCityCuddler That's wonderful!! Thank you for sharing.

    Edited to remove personal details.

  • As someone who grew up in what amounts to an alternate reality, surrounded by enough false information to make an entire parallel universe of fiction, my passion is truth.

Germs exist. Evil spirits apparently don't. Supernatural beings cannot be proven to be watching me at every moment. The universe is much more than 6000 years old. Blood magic is not necessary to save me from an eternity of torture. And so on.

@SCityCuddler thank you! It's from a song in the Heathers musical 😂🎶💔

I guess that's what I'm passionate about! I was sitting here racking my brains for an answer, but I think that's it. Music makes me feel things.

Also, like @DaringSprinter I'm passionate about something that relates to life after abuse- finding myself and living my best life now that I'm 'free'. I changed my name, cut all contact, and purged my life of physical reminders. I'm starting to like the person I am without the constant fear and sadness.

  • Trauma healing, facilitating, teaching, and guiding ... I'm deeply passionate about leaving this world a better place than I entered it.

  • I'm passionate about writing software that is as beautiful as it is functional.

  • Great thread idea!

Wildlife photography is a huge passion of mine. I bought a long lens and it was worth every single penny. I can't imagine trying to pose humans or create still life, but it thrills me to experience wildlife and maybe just catch that perfect moment. It's all up to patience and chance, with wild animals.

I'm passionately curious. I love learning about people, learning about the world, learning why people do what they do and why things work the way they do. I'm always wondering aloud about the most obscure things.

Travel is another massive passion. I spent the first thirty years of my life living in one place, very isolated in every sense of the word, and once I got out, I've had a voracious hunger for new places and new experiences.

Nomadic lifestyles are a deep interest and passion of mine. I lived in my SUV for two years and it was the best time of my life. I would be happy as a clam to move to a new state every six months, or to do full-time RVing, or van life. Any of those would be luxurious compared to my life on the road, which I loved, so they sound amazing!

I am really into organizing. It can definitely be labeled a passion, haha. I love documenting, organizing, setting up systems, all of that. It can be with physical items, or intangibles like computer files, it all makes me happy. Really.

Minimalism is a really big interest of mine. I had the chance to learn how few essentials we really need, when I lived on the road, and I absolutely adored the lifestyle. I got a taste of what it's like to live minimally, but without the hardship of giving up all of my prized possessions, which were put away in storage. Now that I'm living in a house again, I would like to pare down my belongings and live more minimally. I am obsessed with minimalism videos, on YouTube.

I'm passionate about self-awareness and getting to know why I do things the way I do, and what to do about it. I look forward to counseling sessions and reading self-help books that uncover the root of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. There's always more to learn.

  • I am really passionate about video games, particularly the earlier consoles from the NES onward. My first console (well, my dad’s console) was a Colecovision. I am too young (👶) to have any nostalgia for the hundreds of consoles that came before the video game crash in the early 80’s, but from the first Nintendo and onward, I am in love. And growing up with two families allowed me to not have to pick a side when it came to the console wars ☺️

What I love to do is modify my handhelds and consoles so that they can output much better video and sound (I still play on an old CRT television because it just evokes so much nostalgia.) The modding communities around these old consoles are amazing and they have been putting out some truly awesome mods. It’s super nerdy but I love it.

  • I am passionate about erratic behavior. Even I don’t know what that means but it keeps me guessing what I will do next. Probably hit the post button is my guess.

  • I love it when I guess right.
