Can't believe I didn't realize this was also today earlier when my grandpa is a Vietnam Vet. Thank you all. He did manage to get his free meal at Applebee's like he wanted.

Hey, thank you. It’s great to be appreciated on vets day. Especially for those of us whose suffering and sacrifices have been largely ignored because our biggest battles in service were waged within our commands and worst traumas dealt by enemies who wore the same uniform we did.

You’re welcome. I was able to attend a special ceremony today at Arlington National Cemetery. Really puts everything in perspective.
@TheMidnightOwl There are lots of vets on here.but you're the only one I'm aware of who is one that I've met. Appreciate you and all you've done, and I whole heartedly appreciate that you realize that loving.your country doesn't mean accepting the status quo

Veterans don’t have the luxury of letting their political views determine where they are sent and what they are required to do. They obey a chain of command that is bigger than the individual.
Ironically-this is the very thing that allows the individual the freedom to speak his mind. To be able to voice his displeasure with the very country that fights for his right to do so. No one should ever take that for granted.
How much time are our veterans away from their families? How much have they sacrificed-mentally, emotionally, physically? How long have their wives/husbands-and kids-mothers-fathers -family members been without them?
We can all safely spout off opinions and do what we like when we like because this is still the one country where people are given the most freedom- PARTICULARLY-those who exercise their right to speak against what they see as wrong or unfair.
We can only hope that everyone will at least recognize the impact that veterans have had and continue to have on the lives of all of us who are able to live Freely.
The commitment they make is not for the faint of heart and I personally, am extremely thankful for each and every one of them -regardless of their political or personal views on anything.

You're welcome. I had to tell someone to make sure that she kept her kids out of the service. Too much of what's been happening would have put me in the position of having to carry out unlawful orders according to the UCMJ. I am thankful that I'm out. I feel really badly for those currently in uniform about what they have to deal with at the top of the chain of command.
Over the weekend, I heard someone complain that Veteran’s Day should always fall on a Monday so that we can all have a three-day weekend. They might not have realized that Veteran’s Day is specifically observed on November 11th for a reason. Originally called Armistice Day, it was meant to not only commemorate the end of World War 1, but to memorialize the exact time the great guns all along the Western Front fell forever silent: It was at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
I grew up being mentored by WW2 vets (including being taught how to fly!), and many of them insisted on referring to "Armistice Day" even in the 1980's.
@Jubal : I’ve been seeing that going around for a while now. People want it to be like Memorial Day. The day of the week for Veterans Day always changes.
Though I recently learned not all states give it as a day off for school. My take is we should honor & remember those who served & still do, regardless of the day.
@SeekerInVA I have been to the Arlington ceremony on a couple of occasions. My mom, dad and great-uncle are all buried in Arlington. I appreciate the ceremonies, but i appreciate the veteran groups who take care of the graves with flags on every holiday. To me the place is not patriotic—it’s personal.
