What do you do when you are grumpy

  • Doordash. Even though I DD daily (bad, I know) if I'm really grumpy the bill ends up being just under a hundy.

The bill adds up quickly when you tack on sides and desserts! Worth it!

I can totally relate to what you’re saying. I’ve been caregiving for both parents and one fashion or another for over 10 years. For as long as I can remember I’ve always had friends or people on the street when I’m working, come up and talk to me and vent. In the beginning, I never knew why strangers would’ve come up to me and start talking and such. Now I realize it’s part of my nature of being a caregiver in general. Part of it is also I’m used to giving and not receiving. Not always feeling or receiving for myself I guess you could say in the last couple years I’ve slowly started to do more for myself in regards to self care. More to myself at times though.

I Make things worse by thinking of what if situations or what could’ve been. Reminiscing on the past mostly. Trying to understand things that I just can’t understand or trying to figure out why things turned out a certain way.

I know it sounds like a strange coping mechanism, but by me doing this, I overload my mind to where I just get mentally exhausted, and the grumpiness goes away

Years ago, as I was supporting a friend through recovery, he taught me the acronym: H.A.L.T. This stood for "Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired." He taught me that being in any one of these conditions can lead a person to low mood and, therefore, a higher risk of relapse. I know you didn't ask about relapse, just grumpiness, but it seems that there's a correlation. Just wanted to share..

Valerian root helps me a LOT when I'm crabby and want to beat up gnomes and flip off birds! lol The problem is that this stuff smells like a mix between dog poo and dirty socks. Yeah. That bad. But it's a cortisol antagonist that brings about a sense of quiet peace! :)

If i find myself grumpy at work i listen to a funny podcast or put music on. & If i’m at home i either love on my pets or veg out and make sure to go to bed early. I can be an asshole without a full 8hrs of sleep

  • Don't resist. Accept it. Like the matrix moment. Accept it until your mind no longer identifies the mood as something to bother with. It loses its grip, goes away. Like a snow under the sun. Also make sure you eat healthy, sleep well, exercise regularly :)

    Headphones and play spotify

  • I kind of like the smell and flavor of valerian root. Unfortunately, it has no effect on me.

Ideally, I'd cuddle with someone, but I seem to be in an area with very few cuddlers, especially ones who can host.

Glad to read some of these. (no I did not read through the whole thread lol)

Listening to music and taking a nap is one thing I do.
I used to cuddle but I haven't had someone in awhile, but having someone to just squeeze you and talk helps. (I don't know why, but good firm hugs are such a nice thing. It's like all the upset, all the lonely, all the tired just gets up and squeezed/massaged out of you.)

Someone mentioned cardio, I like to walk around and around in circles if I have no energy.

@Unscented_Lemon ~ You're only the 2nd person I've heard this from!! I soooo wish it did... When it works, IT WORKS.. But I have to agree about the cuddle thing, though. Even on my grumpiest of days, having someone hold me still, squeeze me tightly enough to feel mutual heartbeats, and whisper, "You're not in this alone.." would fix EVERYTHING!!!

May you SOOOON find not only a Mega-Cuddler, but one who can happily, and willingly, Host! :)

Among other randomness, I sorted through my collection of kites today and got them ready for an upcoming playdate I have scheduled with my honey's kiddos. 🪁

    edit -
Posted because I was grumpy prior and now I'm not.
That's one way I deal. By prepping for something I'm looking forward to.

  • I typically stay in bed. Sometimes eating like.. straight up nutritional yeast dry with some lemon pepper seasoning. I call this goblin mode. Or maybe distract by reading a book.

  • Apparently banannas do it for me, I must be a monkey 🙊. As long as I eat many banannas and eat well every day (high protein too) I tend to not be grumpy, but banannas are a key factor. This discovery is given credit to my Spouse who knows me better than I know me.

  • @quixotic_life I just want to take a moment to absorb the fact that you have a kite collection that is of sorting size and capacity...

When I feel grumpy I talk to this dude in a trash can named Oscar. He gets me and I feel seen.

  • Talk about it to a random stranger I’ll never talk to again
Go on a date with someone just to get away
    Cuddle for same
Going for a really long walk for same, especially in the rain
    Listen to music
    Watch/listen to something inspiring
Write about what’s really on my mind and then erase it later
    Fasting
    Ice cream & cookies
Sleep - Sleep and More Sleep
    Taking a swim
    Shopping lol

  • Four-legged friends help with the grumpies.

  • @pmvines those actions you take all sound very positive to me. There are also quite a few good ideas in this thread. One thing I do is try to get quiet, without distractions, and pay close attention to my feelings. Feelings are messages that, when heard, tell me which of my needs is/are not being met. Then, I can take steps to meet those needs.

  • I take some time alone and meditate. I also watch old barbie cartoons, I find they comfort me 🥰

  • @JL_Borges I used to love silence , but the past several years I have a ringing in my ears that won't go away so I need noise. Silence is not my friend.

  • @pmvines

I have a ringing in my ears

    answer it then.

  • @Mike403 I see what you did there lol

  • I ....
    1. eat chocolate
    2. submerge in water (bath or pool to seek the quiet) - OP: sorry for the ringing in your ears.
    3. nap
    4. find a friend with whom I can connect to do something fun.

  • I never thought that I would see the day when I wouid become a grumpy old man, but here I am killing it !

  • When I'm grumpy I go around kicking puppies, screaming at babies, and starting deliberate religious arguments with little old ladies

  • Just kidding of course 👀😏

Usually it means it's that time of the month where food cravings are bad. So chocolate or sugar generally. I go to the gym too which might help if my energy levels are high. I do weight training so I tend to wear myself out and then I'm too tired for much after that. Nature, I love grounding out in nature. CBD gummies (they're THC free) help me relax when I'm over thinking.

Babies do give me quite the headache when I'm grumpy though but I suppose it's not quite socially acceptable to tell a baby to shut the f up ,😏

  • @RebeccaKe - It isn't? I tell babies to shut the f up all the time.
