Random tips/tricks/advice

This has always been fun for me. I love reading random facts/ tips/ advice for things you might not have learned up to this point. Can be about anything as long as it’s appropriate!!

I’ll go first:

Rub your knife with olive oil (carefully). It should stop you from crying when chopping onions!

  • A properly sharp knife will cut the onions smooth enough you won't cry! Most kitchen mishaps I have seen are because people are using dull knives. They should have a very nice and fine edge and you should cut effortlessly through all meats and vegetables. Bone, you might need specific equipment. Also, if the onion is refrigerated, it won't produce as much of the cry juice. I apologize for my childish nickname, but the academic name escapes me and I am too lazy to look it up simply to sound smart on the internet for stranger points.

One thing I learned way too late in life but thanks to my reflexologist is the importance of a full sized body pillow when sleeping. Spoon it between your legs when going to sleep. It will help keep your back, hip, and leg tendons/muscles in line. It has greatly reduced my chronic back pain. I also found out I was sitting wrong so in case you are wondering, knees forward lads and back straight up.

  • @lesmis33 I figured your name came from Les Miserables. How is your nickname childish? And how were you formerly
    sitting?

  • oh lol. @achetocuddle "my childish nickname" was in reference to the nickname I gave the onion juices that spew forth when you cut them and make us weep unfamiliar tears. This nickname would be "cry juice" lol. It is rather infantile but I prefer a certain childish whimsy especially when cooking. I apologize for the confusion.

Yes, my namesake is a reference to Les Miserables which is one of my favorite musicals about my favorite revolution. Et, je parle un petit peu francais hon hon hon.

As for how I was formerly sitting, I would hitch my left foot underneath my upper right thigh and move it all about. I am unfamiliar with the colloquial terms for sitting postures though. I will look up a more formal name if that description is inadequate.

  • If you have hiccups, get a cup of water, take a piece of paper towel and hold it flat to the top of the cup and drink through it. The way your throat changes its movement when drinking through the paper towel forces it to relax and makes the hiccups go away :)

  • @lesmis33 I think that’s where we go wrong. My knives are never sharp lol I don’t want to spend the money to get proper knives lol 😆 I actually used to work in a butcher shop and sharpening our knives was a morning routine.

@cudbud64 oooo I like that. I’ll have to try that. Thankfully, I don’t get hiccups a lot, but when I do, it’s friggin annoying. And then everyone around you tries to “scare” the hiccups away 😂😂

Here’s one: apparently, if you put lemon wedges in your boiling water while boiling eggs, it makes the shells pretty well fall off. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m going to for sure!!

If you tie your shoe laces into a normal double knott one of the two solo lace ends when pulled hard enough will untie the knott entirely in one single pull. The other solo lace end will make the knott worse to untie. After doing it you will quickly understand which one to pull.

Saves time should you have wet and muddy laces, your hands are freezing and lack dexterity. Or you are in a rush to get your boots off.

  • @lesmis33 After I posted my questions to you I realized I was not firing on all cylinders, lol, but you answered beautifully.

@lonelytauros I have laughed so many times because of you. Thanks.

Lemonjuice and vinegar can clean mild rust off copper and metal and steel surfaces. It smells terrible but gets the job done

Also you can make your own Carmel glaze to add to any dessert by combining butter brownsugar and milk, mix together put it on stove for 10mins stir it frequently. Then lt it cool for 10mins

Leaves you with similar Carmel glaze.
you buy out of the bottle at a store

  • Ooooo I’m learning so much 😁😁😁😁

  • My knives are never sharp lol I don’t want to spend the money to get proper knives lol

@Sheena123 just buy a decent knife sharpener. I use this one https://www.amazon.com/Orange-Ninja-4-Stage-Knife-Sharpener/dp/B09PZDXSLL/ref=sr_1_36?keywords=knife+sharpener&qid=1701883549&sr=8-36

It works great even on the cheap knives I have had since college! No need to get a nice set. You'll probably need to start a bit with the more coarse grinds and then once you have a nice edge, you will just use the fine sharpener once or twice between use. No more anthropomorphizing onions for you then!

  • Uber/Lyft often detect if one another is installed on the same device and will adjust their prices down accordingly. Always check both apps before purchasing a ride to save the most money. I have seen the same ride go for $20 on one and like $60 on another. If the prices are very high on both apps, wait 10-20 minutes if you are able. Usually this happens when a big concert or event just got out and everyone is mass purchasing rides at the same time. Once the initial shock dies down, you will have a ride for a more reasonable fare. I've saved as much as $50 on a single ride following these guidelines.

  • @FutureHeart2023 im going to see if I can make that Carmel glaze using coconut milk. It’s worth a try.

  • Random Tip : To eat an elephant you must still take one bite at a time. No matter how big the task may seem you can break it down into smaller more manageable chunks.
Random Trick : Wipe a screw or nail through your hair before driving it in. The oils will make the wood less likely to split. Not sure if this is sage or not, but my father used to do it.
Random Advice : Learn how to say I'm sorry.

  • County highway departments have incinerators for disposing of animal carcasses. If you look online you can find out who runs the equipment and sometimes you can pay them to… wait, that might not be an appropriate topic to share tips about 😂

  • Have baby wipes on hand. Never know when the use for them will come up.

  • Ooooooo! Fun! Kinda wish I liked onions now 😉 But I can at least tell others and appear smart!

@achetocuddle I just always love your comments! And I totally do the same things! 😂 And you're right @lesmis33 replied perfectly

    @JohnR1972 🤣🤣🤣 🤭🤭🤭

Tip: Anybody can become angry ...that's easy. But to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way....that is not within everybody's power, and is not easy. -Aristotle

Trick: When cutting apples for snacks.... Set a bowl of ice water next to you and squirt about 1- 2 teaspoons of lemon juice in it. As you cut the apples, throw them into the bowl for a few minutes (make sure they get fully dunked). Then put them into a container and they won't get brown and squishy!! 😇

Advice: When someone comes to you with a problem (kids, friends, siblings, partner....etc). Hold your advice or even encouragement. Always empathize first! Listen and empathize and validate their feelings (even if you wouldn't feel the same in their shoes). This is the best thing. Maybe ....after they are done venting....they might want your advice or help. But let them tell you.

  • These are so awesome to read 💖💖💖

    Here’s one I read:

There’s a song that’s been proven to reduce anxiety by 65%. It’s called Weightless by Marconi Union. The song was written and produced to actually slow down your heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and lower cortisol levels. It actually works so well that it’s recommended NOT to listen to while driving.

    Weightless by Marconi Union

What an amazing song. I am listening to it now and at such peace. Thank you for suggesting it @Sheena123
Songs like this that have such a palpable effect makes me cognizant of how we humans have such simple monkey brains that are easily manipulated by well crafted stimuli.

  • @lesmis33 its mesmerizing isn’t it?? 🥰🥰

  • 😂😂😂😂

  • Instead of scraping ice off your car, mix 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 water and spray. It should melt right off 🌸🌸

  • Oooooooo! The macaroni song is awesome! 😎😎😎 Thanks for the reminder @Sheena123

  • @RedFox16 you got it!!! 👍🏻🥰👍🏻

From personal experience...at 10:00 last night on a mountain pass... 😆🥶❄️🏞

If you lose your phone in the snow at night, and it's on vibrate...call it anyway, and turn your flashlights/light sources off! The phone will light up the snow like a storm cloud, even if it's completely buried!!!

@RedFox16 Ooh, I'm gonna try the apple one, thanks!

I have very sensitive eyes and I swear by these onion goggles. They're dorky-looking, but truly the only thing that have worked for me other than sticking my face in the freezer and blinking several times after my eyes have already been assaulted.

For hiccups, saying out loud, "I am not a fish," has worked surprisingly well for myself and others.

  • @cocoabomb I think that's the best one I've seen so far. lol.

  • I really don't understand why
Her eyes can't remain fully dry.
    While prepping her meal
    With sharp blade of steel,
The onions are starting to cry.

  • @JoyfulHeart beautiful as always but if you want an answer...

refrigerate the onion first. It helps keep the onion fumes from wafting up.
