Do you attend any conventions?

I don't often, but I'm going to my first anime convention in March just to check it out. The cost of the badge(needed to get in) was $55 for 3 days. Of course they'll be a lot of people in costume dressed as their favorite character, but they'll also be a video gaming room, a rave(dancing), a Manga library, and more.

    So many memories from going to anime conventions in my youth. The rave definitely got debaucherous, but when I got to be in my mid 20s, I was in the older crowd. One year, I accidentally attended a movie during the "After dark" hours which turned out to be rather obscene and had to excuse myself. I made sure to double check every panel I went to after that.

    I tend to go to tech conventions though.

    @lesmis33 - This convention warned that the panels after 9pm will be limited to 18+ audiences only as they will be exploring sexual and violent themes.

    @Mike403 Yep! But I really must warn you. The depths of depravity I bore witness to during that fateful night, I dare not mention outside of a cautionary tale. It still is in my top 10 most uncomfortable moments of all time. Some would call it a top ten anime betrayal. There were fun late night panels though like history of anime and others that might break TOS for the forums..... Just know what you are getting yourself into is all.

    I’ve been to DragonCon about 8 out of the past 11 years. It is an incredibly fun event, I am planning to attend again this year.

    @JohnR1972 That is awesome! Which tracks do you attend? The paranormal/table top/board gaming ones are the most interesting to me!

    I had been going to the E3 Video Game convention every year since like 2005 (RIP). I also have gone to the Penny Arcade Expo, as well as the San Diego Comic Con a bunch of times. I had been going to Blizzcon from its inception to when they started going digital (I mainly want the digital goodies). Most recently I went to the LA Comic Con, and the Pasadena Comic Com is coming up this month. The only other one I can think of was a Vinyl Toy convention in Pasadena years ago when I was collecting Kidrobot vinyl figures. I want to go to an anime expo now because I have gotten super in to One Piece haha.

    I had gotten Funimation for when I exhaust the Netflix One Piece episodes and need to continue watching the many hundreds more on there haha. I haven’t tried Crunchyroll but I have a feeling once I am done with One Piece I will get sucked in to other shows.

    Edit: Oh wow if I can swing it maybe the Colorado Anime Fest can be my first!

    @CharlieBear - I think both Funimation and Crunchyroll are similar in the content they have. They both get brand new anime as soon as they air in Japan while Netflix only gets select shows after the entire season has aired.

    @lesmis33 - I mix it up. I will usually attend 3 or 4 EFF (privacy & digital rights) sessions, plus 2 or 3 science track, and 1 or 2 zombie apocalypse (emergency preparedness) track.

    I also attend some purely ones like the Monty Python Experience, something from the Dr. Who track and something from a Star Trek panel,

    @lesmis33 - one of my favorite parts of DragonCon used to be having dinner one night at “Fires of Brazil” but they have since closed. Last year I discovered “Iron Age” which is an excellent restaurant and it will become a regular part of my DragonCon experience from now on.

    Dying to go to MAGFest this year. 🥲 (Music and Gaming Festival in Maryland)

    I've worked at CTCon here in Connecticut and miss it. (General geekery convention much like MAGFest or Comi-Con.)

    Went to Comi-Con once... (Eh!?) Been to iCon and DerpyCon one time each, enjoyed them.

    Lastly, I have either attended or staffed "other" conventions before that were more adult themed. (Although one of the adult themed ones also had a Comi-Con, geek element to it.)

    Conventions are my happy place! I love the energy.⚡

    @JohnR1972 literally all those tracks sound awesome and aligned with my general interests. Okay, it is settled. I will try to go to dragoncon this year. I will convince some of my fellow dorks to attend as well.

    @PixiePassions MAGFest is great! I tend to just stay in the japanese rhythm arcade :D

    I had not attended any conventions so far! But I would like to attend a tantra retreat preferably amidst nature with plenty off the grid time. Like a forest or a beach. I would also like to visit fair/convention for livestock.

    The one I usually like to go to is Anime Midwest in July. Some of the 18+ panels are funny adult card games where you get to see how creative and funny people can be. I still laugh when I remember the the guy dressed as Luigi telling his story/premise for a game.

    I go to C2E2 in Chicago every year and plan on being there for the weekend in April.

    Used to go to Comic-Con every year when I’d lived in San Diego. Have gone to BlizzCon too.

    It doesn’t really count as a convention but last September I attended “Hippie Living Fair” just outside Grand Rapids, MI. It features live music, numerous food trucks, camping, vendor booths, etc. I attended with someone I met on this site and we both thought it would be a perfect place to hold a CC meet and greet in September 2024.     I don’t know what the vendor booth / tents cost but I the way the event was set up, I suspect the prices were reasonable. There is plenty of parking and the vibe of the whole event was open, friendly and laid back. It truly seemed like an ideal place to do a meet and greet. We were only there for Friday evening but the whole event runs Friday through Sunday.

    There are a lot of CC members in Michigan and the Ionia Fairgrounds are about 3.5 hours from Chicago where we have a LOT of members. The event is early September which in that part of Michigan is beautiful during the day and a bit cool in the evening. Everyone will need to bring a lawn chair or blanket if they want to watch the live music in the evening (I found out the hard way the stadium seats were closed so you either have to stand or BYOC).

    I am not very good at coordinating such events but I am planning to attend again this September with a friend. If you and others want to make it an official meet and greet I will look forward to seeing you there!
