Can the hug be improved?

edited June 2024 in General

How does one prepare for a hug? The science of hugging, should we study this? Is this something to be left to magic, as it seems to show the sum of the relationship. We have choices that include not hugging, or giving hugs. It is amazing that we have a website devoted to connecting huggers. Is a hug just a hug? I believe yes and no. There's an energy being shared, that has been broken down to a chemical, oxytocin that we can agree on. But is there more? Can our intent amplify this chemical? Or reduce its effects. If we could measure the effects what would it show? An emogee would be great as it communicates emotions simply. It feels so much more powerful to me. In retrospect, I believe pondering of the event would reduce its benefits almost certainly. Kind of a mind no mind type of thing. We've all had the side hugs, one arm thing, the list goes on, but I believe the preparation for the hug mentally is the key. How is this done? Expect nothing. (and always growl when you hug, people love that) (I'm kidding)..but the preparation seems to be the key.

I have a friend I've known for 5+ years..will not hug me...it used to really bother me now it's a game..I've mastered the no expression pleasant face. I put no effort into the gesture now and I'm not disappointed (it still really hurts) ..it's so odd. But..I do overthink things.

One day when the hug evolves because of websites like this, humans will get the message that our universe is immensely more powerful because of our sincere hugging efforts, and maybe eventually we will use hug energy to create and power things. Maybe a wristband that measures hug energy causes a bell goes off when the hug is perfect. (Congratulations that was a 6)

I dream.

Thoughts?

This thread is making me chuckle

  • prepare? As with so many things life, like skydiving, I just jump in without thinking about it

    B)

  • @GuitarGar I know you are a deep thinker. My thoughts: don’t overthink it. :)

  • Giving and receiving a hug is extremely complicated, approach with caution.

  • I don’t want hugs to get scary. ;)

  • You wanna make something weird and awkward, just over think the crap out of it

  • He's even smarter now with those glasses on.

    I agree

  • @GuitarGar WELCOME TO THE SITE!!! 😊

And thank you for posing such a thought provoking question.

I really like what you said here…

There's an energy being shared, that has been broken down to a chemical, oxytocin that we can agree on. But is there more?

I do think the baseline chemical stuff is important to note, but I think you are right that there might be a little more nuance to it.

So many different personalities, so much different history, and maybe different practice of authentic relating as well.

A hug can just be a hug but it can also be a vastly interesting experience depending on the two (or TEN) people connecting.

Have so much fun with all of your musings and meanderings. And as always…. “May the Cuddle Gods be EVER in your favor!!” 😊

  • @GuitarGar
I agree with @sillysassy -very thought provoking.

it is extremely obvious you put a ton of thought into this.

We have all had really weak hugs and truly healing hugs.

The energy is palpable with both-

    Great Post

    I have a hugging methodology!
    I'll keep it simple...
    Disclaimer...all the hugs are awesome.
This is my intentional hug that I like to share during many of my cuddle sessions, and people who know me will greet me and say goodbye in this way

Place both arms around each other, one above and one below the arm/shoulder. Lean the body a little to the side so your hearts are close together. Hold on to the hug for a good 20-30 seconds or 4-5 breaths. I like to finish with eye contact and a very sincere smile ☺️

@Auroradream That's a good method. Science is golden.

Your greeting is now my new standard ha! (I have you to thank!) ..disclaimer- all hugs are golden

@pmvines I hang out in awkward, that's where the science is...but I see your point.

Expressing a theory requires a captive audience..otherwise it's me making more odd observations to regular people who may or may not be curious as to what makes them tick.

I will consider your position as advice.

  • @ShaneSchrute I'm starting work on those wristbands today..(I'm kidding of course) but agreed, hugs should be chill.

  • @BrianOcean I could never understand hugs as a child, my Mom, grandma and Aunts seemed to. So I pretended and waited for the explanation.

    It never came ..

So I'm taking matters into my own hands. This website prepares the mind for the answer..but the right question..

  • @sillysassy There seems to be a hug request posture and hug received posture. The vulnerability in the request creates an energy void. This is filled by the energy of the person accepting the request. The uncertainty in the spirit is where the vibration starts...we are never 100 percent sure at hug zero..(Sorry about all of this nonsense)

If the energy request is met they IMO create something. (Something we can't see but we feel) We don't know what, but whatever I'm saying guarantees ME no hugs hahaaa..but this must be explored or we allow the greatest power in our universe to be reduced to a greeting.

@CuddleHugs01234 I will try to be normal, (for you) but the cap is off and mentos is spittin a powerful coke geyser into the air!!

  • Great questions. Arm locations? Energy of hands? Length of hug? Speaking? (I often growl!) Breath? Awareness? Ending? Like snowflakes, every hug is different. I would love to explore the science of hugging while developing its ethereal art.

    @TxTom i just gotta say

  • When I’m feeling good, there are people that I give Text hugs to every day. There are three different kinds. In person, they are mostly just bear hugs.

    The 3.

Hugging you as tight as you can handle.

Wrapping my arms around you and giving a big squishy hug.

Wraps my arms around you and squeezes tight.

I have people who will request particular hugs from those three.

  • @Bear interesting approach, those three examples of hugs IMO shows your dedication to giving.

    I'm sure there's been a Ted talk on hugs..but
down the road we need a hug panel hahaaa

  • @Renofellow Great thoughts to ponder, with all of those considerations, I know people may see all of this as maybe a little too technical, but it's the wild west folks..

  • A few of my hugging styles:
Since I'm short, my head usually rests on their chest area, not cheek to cheek. Arms wrapped around back. (I will occasionally do arms/hands-on-shoulders hugs, but only with someone I know very well because it could be misinterpreted for a kiss.)
I have a friend who combines our hugs with cracking my back. It's a learned talent, I don't trust others to do that.
When hugging for a "I'm so glad to see you" long hug, when it ends, I like to go in for another quicker hug/squeeze. The levels off the energy drop.
I won't do back claps, half hugs or daps, too awkward, just can't pull them off. Coolest scene for those is in The Italian Job.

  • I have a friend who combines our hugs with cracking my back.

Hmmm. Possible new category? Enthusiast cuddler, Pro cuddler, and now, Chiro cuddler.

  • My chiropractor hugs me. Three times in fact. He seems pleased about the noise it creates. $40 for all three hugs in total

  • I used to not want hugs. It was 100% my touch aversion and 0% anything to do with the other person.

  • I have become known for giving strong crackly hugs (chiropractor style). If I'm going for a more emotionally fulfilling hug, I will usually go with one arm over a shoulder and one arm under the other person's arm - Which results in a mirrored hug the other way. The one arm over hug makes for a closer hugging experience and more of a mutual embrace (instead of one person being the hugger and one person being hugged).
