Cows truly have a wonderful life---as long as they can avoid getting eatten!

Generally I am happy with my own life although there are plenty of times I wish I was another species. I have to say that in the Summer time,, I really admire the life of a cow enjoying the sun on a warm sunny day in some lush pasture out in the middle of the country. After all, the only major concerns are a cool spot to take a nap in a relatively fly free zone next to an apple tree where free snacks fall in front of my feet on occasion. There is a lot to be said for leading an uncomplicated life and just enjoying the warmth of the sun! Is there a species you are envious of on occasion? If you your could change places with another animal---what would it be?

    Birds, maybe. Horses! They don't get eaten, they graze, have fun, get treated well (that ive seen). They've got some benefits of a pet's life, while retaining some freedom and respect. But, they don't run the risk of being eaten and are allowed to live as long as they can

    @lonelytauros ha! Yes. I remember when all those silly men got really angry when women overwhelmingly choose in a hypothetical scenario to be alone in the woods with a bear rather than a random man.

    Birds or a great white shark :)
    Just imagine soaring up high flying place to place, pooping on people, or scouring the depths of the ocean, torpedo bombing the hell out of a seal for your dinner. So awesome :)
    Plus you don't have to worry if you lose a tooth.

    @dennis22554 i cannot agree with your assessment of a cows life. Unless there is a such thing as a wild cow. Never heard of one before. But the idea of being a bull being occasionally taken advantage of doesn't sit right with me. As well as my sisters and mother being forced to carry my children is a no for me, everytime. Not to mention the other things the lady cows go through just to fatten up all the people walking around.

    I admire an elephants life as long as it's not in a circus or some silliness like that. Elephants shape the world around them, not harming anyone and also not really getting messed with constantly.

    Bears are cool too, much preferred over people.

    @bashful --I respectfully disagree--but do like your assessment of elephants. To your point---when I think of a cows life---I am really focused on a real rebel cow----one thats not concerned about her girly figure-or whether she has too many spots on her stomach---a cow that doesn't put up with bs from other cows---a cow that knows what they want in life and just goes for it

    I don't envy any animals. I am free to go live in the woods if I wish so I don't see the point unless you're a bird or fish which get different travel options compared to humans.

    I do see the appeal of living a simple life though. Mine is generally more simple than most but I do sometimes wonder how I would feel living more off grid and growing all/most of my own food. It comes with some downsides of course which is why I am not doing that currently.

    I feel that I would enjoy trying out making a house and growing my own food and everything.

    Beef cattle are not the only cows who need to worry about mistreatment. Dairy cows are impregnated manually by humans, their calves are taken away very shortly after they are born, and the cows are forcefully impregnated, again. This is to ensure they are constantly supplying humans with milk.

    The baby calves are put into tiny pens, alone, with a sort of igloo for shelter. The baby males are sold to butchers for veal. The females are raised to suffer the same perpetual forced impregnation as their mothers.

    As for the bulls, they are also manually, shall we say, stimulated, by humans, to acquire their semen, so it can later be injected, by humans, into the cows.

    Ever used Bag Balm? It was invented for dairy cows, because in winter, their udders crack and bleed.

    The image of a happy cow living her best life in a green field is a nice one, but unfortunately, is simply very unlikely to be reality.

    Wild horses do get eaten, sadly - their main predators are mountain lions, wolf packs, and bears. Humans cause most of their deaths, however. Culling of wild horses has long been a thing, and when it's outlawed, they simply ship them across the border to slaughterhouses.

    As far as domestic horses, the classic book Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (or the 1994 film version) well describes the awful treatment that horses can experience.

    If you really want to upset yourself, which I don't recommend, you can Google modern practices such as "soring", which is done to the gorgeous Tennessee Walking Horse, to make them prance higher in the show ring. Let's just say chemicals and nails can be involved. Humans are depraved.

    I used to wish that I was a deer. I envisioned a completely carefree life, not having to work, make money, cook or clean, or have any of the worries and issues that we humans deal with. But eventually, I realized something. Deer spend their entire existence doing two things...eating, and avoiding danger. In other words, their life is every bit a struggle to survive, just like ours. Less complex, but likely no less stressful.

    Also, deer have no healthcare. When they get sick, or caught in barbed wire, or hit by a car, no ambulance rushes to their side, no doctor gives them morphine and puts them back together. They die in agony, in pain, often starving, sometimes eaten alive. 🥺

    It's easy to romanticize something we've never experienced...but honestly, everyone and everything has their own struggles to overcome, their own dangers to avoid, their own persecutors to fear.

    It would be nice to live a simple and carefree life. But the life of an animal, especially wildlife, is probably not that.

    That's a tough question, maybe an ocean critter, like a dolphin. The freedom abd swimming everywhere would feel like soaring in the sky. I did debate a bird but I would need a lot of ademdims for that haha

    Tough call. As @SunsetSnuggles points out, nearly all wild animals live by the law of the jungle, and every day is usually a struggle for survival. And of course being a domestic animal wouldn't be much fun, unless you were a very VERY lucky housepet. But I can think of a couple critters which might be fun to be.

    Bald eagle - has few predators, and it would be amazing to soar among the treetops, picking off whatever prey was fit to eat.

    Great white shark - ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-DUM. Need I say more? No, seriously, being an apex predator who only has to fear orcas would be awesome. Especially knowing that humans aren't allowed to catch me or harm me - cause I'm a Federally protected species dudes and dudettes!!. Just cruise up and down California and pick off lone surfers or swimmers, maybe scare the crap out of people in kayaks or small boats from time to time (can a shark get a secondary high from eating a pothead?) When the people get all bent out of shape and want to go kill me, it's like MC Hammer "U can't touch this"! Could even greet people with " 'allo, mah name is Bruce"

    my posts are never intended to be political in nature not and are normally a lead into the real topic---this case "leading a carefree life"---it may be a misrepresentation--but I always view cows as generally "happy"----although I do say I would also consider leading a life as a "dolphin"----the post please note no ill will or harm to any animal species was intended

    @Jubal I think basically the opposite of you regarding being a domestic pet. I wish I lived as well as the average spoiled American cat or dog, lol. They eat as well as I do and have more toys and positive attention than I've ever had, lol. I know people that have changed their whole house and consistently put their cats' comfort over their own. I enjoy going to their houses but I wouldn't want to live like the owners do, only like the cats do.
