@lonelytauros - I am only 58 and I am planning to work for at least another 17 years. I seriously do not expect Social Security to be around when I retire and I take a very long term view of the stock market. In other words, regardless of what the market does over the next 6 months, I am not going to lose sleep about it.
The job market is bad now and I suspect it will get worse before it gets even worse than that. My skill set is about as recession proof as it gets but it took me many years of working full time while going to grad school to get to where I am now. I genuinely feel sorry for Gen Z trying to get established in the current environment.
@Sooson - you make an excellent point about putting at least a small amount in crypto because of the limited down side and potentially large upside. Now that I have completed making my planned purchases for getting through expected rough times this fall, I will probably start putting some money into crypto.
@TxTom - I think you are referring to my previous post about the Gartner “Hype Cycle”.
I do think AI has just passed the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” and is rapidly sliding toward the “Trough of Disillusionment”.

@JohnR1972 Yes, that's it. I was now able to find your original comment. Here it is, from July 2023. You were spot on.
I believe AI is currently within 3-6 months of the “peak of inflated expectations” and within the next 6-12 months it will begin sliding down the backside of the curve toward the trough of disillusionment. Probably 18-24 months from now (my best guess) it will start back up the “slope of enlightenment” where it will start making a bigger impact than it is currently making but a much smaller (for most people and businesses) than many people are predicting based on “inflated expectations”.

A former employer of mine just posted my old job for $5k less at their highest tier than at the lowest tier when I hired in. They just went through a rash of high-wage (cost) terminations in the past 2 weeks and their job postings are plastered all over Indeed. People think it's job creation because many of these job have similar titles, except add in assistant, and report to "managers." The managers are gone, so all the responsibilities fall to the new, vastly underpaid assistant manager. Same job description, same responsibilities, but less title and less pay. Sneaky.
@starrynitecuds - Without naming your former employer, can you tell me if they were a publicly traded company?

200 applications, 25 interviews so far. No job offer yet. I even got rejected by Walmart.
@Mike403 Ahh, I see you're new to layoffs. I've been out of work since May 2023. In 3 months I applied to hundreds, maybe thousands of jobs. I get laid off yearly.
@TxTom networking groups are just people trying to sell you their coaching course or MLMs. There's nothing anyone can do outside of just wait until the job market improves. It's always bad before an election. I've been laid off almost yearly in tech and have been unemployed 15 months.
@Mike403 Fiserv laid me off May 2023 in Denver. They actually betrayed me by begging me to be a direct hire off a contract & then laid me off right after being onboarded. I see we are both live near eachother. The market in Denver is probably one of the worst I've ever experienced because it's all temp jobs.

Yeah! Right on! Shame on all of us who have offered suggestions on finding work based on our personal experience. We deserve to have our necks rung 🙄
I hired numerous permanent employees in my last corporate job (I still keep in touch with a few of the people I hired via LinkedIn). I also hired nearly a dozen short term contract employees to work for the company I started when I resigned from my last corporate job.
But don’t listen to any of us, we don’t know anything about finding jobs or what employers are looking for when posting jobs. The best thing any unemployed person can do is give up looking for work and wait until the job market improves 🤦♂️
Over the past 40 years, I have been unemployed 1 time when I was laid off from the automotive industry and I had a new job (that paid more than my old job) within 6 weeks.
I am well aware the job market today is a LOT worse but giving up and waiting for things to get better is a really bad idea.
I don’t take financial advice from people who are broke or career advice from people who are chronically unemployed, but that is just me. I’m probably missing out on a lot of “life changing” advice.

That actually is not surprising as they may consider you overqualified and/or assume you will still be looking for a better job while there and only plan to be there as a temporary solution. You may want to consider having 2 or 3 different resumes and when applying pick the one that fits best. Maybe a resume that looks a little less professional and gives more of a blue collar vibe when applying for retail.
While I have not used the Career Networking Group that I referenced on page 1, my sister did during her job search and found it extremely useful; not only with a successful job search, but resume building support, interview coaching, networking, etc.
Even if one doesn't land a new career, the networking connections alone are valuable. Because sometimes, as they say, "it's not what you know, but who you know."

10-15% of my applications leads to an interview which leads me to believe there is nothing wrong with my resume. I'm just not coming across as somebody they want to hire when they talk to me apparently.
I was contacted by a temp agency a few months after signing up with them saying there's an opportunity for a 3-6 week assignment paying $20/hour. Better than nothing I suppose...and I'll still keep looking for more permanent positions. I just completed an online assessment they sent me and it looked like I did really well on. I hope it goes through as I want to return to work asap

I updated my resume to 3 jobs included the key words for the position I applied to and then ran it though AI to fix it up.

I just had to quit my job at a resort. I was working there for three years as a spa coordinator at minimum wage. All of a sudden, the owner of the place wanted to move me to different departments, give me a whole lot of extra work and make me do managerial tasks. I said I would do all this if I’m paid more. He said “I only pay you minimum wage because legally I can’t pay you less. Your job deserves less than what you make.” If my job is so worthless and I’m such a worthless employee, why try to make me do multiple tasks and put me in charge of two entire departments hmm? So yea, I quit. Most jobs are great, it’s purely management that makes you feel like garbage.

@Sheena123 - wtf... I would've flipped my boss the bird before walking out. Sounds like he wanted you to quit but didn't want to fire you because he didn't want to pay unemployment.
@gem7 thanks 😊 it wasn’t easy. I absolutely loved working there but once he started messing with the spa department for no reason at all, everything went to crap 😣
@Mike403 yea he definitely never liked me. Any time he would try to move others around or have them do more and more and more, they would all just say “sir yes sir” but then again, they were getting paid $20-$30/hour, so when he started doing that to me while I’m only at minimum wage,, no thanks… I had to leave or I would have cried every single day at work….

I haven't read the whole thread. Just the original post. But I feel you. I stupidly quit my job in July as, in November, I had multiple job offers and the one I picked wasn't a good fit. Since then I have applied for about 50 jobs. I am a fairly highly qualified person. With evidence of being a loyal employee on my cv and good references. I now have 3 casual jobs, have had for about 3 weeks and still no shifts. I guess I keep applying and keep going to interviews. I move jobs every 7 years or so. It has never been this hard before. Hope you find a job soon xx
My place just canned 12% of the workforce. And not the first time this year. So more OT. And also more temps if needed. And not replacing anyone that leaves. Been that way for more than 2 years now.
