And Today's Holiday is... πŸ“…

edited March 11 in General

Sup. 😎

There are a ton of really fun, interesting, random, and impactful holidays, national days, world days, and whole-month celebrations out there!

I thought it would be cool to check them out and see which ones catch our fancy. πŸ—“ Maybe for once in my life, I'll know ahead of time that Spoil Your Dog Day, Donut Day, Letter to an Elder Day, or Housewife Day is coming up...

Then, I'll finally have enough warning to actually buy that new dog toy, get up at 5:00 A.M. for those free Krispy Kremes, write that letter of gratitude, or become a housewife. πŸ˜ƒ

So here's the dealio pershmeelio...

Visit National Today's overview of each month.

Click on See Month, and you can either scroll down starting on the 1st, or you can click a date from the calendar at the top, to jump to that day's specific holidays. (You can also shortcut to "today", here, or browse and filter by category if you click "Holidays" from the dropdown menu at the top of the site.)

Click any holiday to read more about it - some have tabs for History, FAQ's, Timeline, etc. Maybe you want to check out what's happening on your birthday?

Share the days here that you find interesting, funny, or that you care about! Are you going to do anything for it? Did you even know it existed?

Are you going to ride your bike to work, bake cookies, or call your friend Jeremy, now that you know there's a day for that? πŸ˜„ Shaking your head and moving on with your life is a valid option, too. But if you do participate, we'd love to see pictures! πŸ“Έ

Have fun celebrating the obscure and the original! πŸ₯³

    Here's the link for August:

    I'm intrigued by International Childfree Day. My boyfriend and I are happily child-free (as opposed to "childless"). It's an ongoing choice that we frequently revisit with relief and gratitude that we are in this position of freedom, in life. We like kids, and dote on our nieces, but each have our personal reasons why this is the life we have chosen, and we are so happy that we are both still on the same page, six years later. We channel our parental love and affection toward our dog, and love our little family. πŸ‘«πŸ»πŸ• There's also a lot of ways to nurture and share my maternal side, through cuddling, and just plain friendship.

    National Planner Day sounds cute! I love using planners or making my own digital ones, and watching YouTube videos here and there on how others keep their lives organized. πŸ“’ August seems a bit of an odd month to celebrate this, but hey, I guess it gives us plenty of time to get our booties in gear before the coming year!

    August is apparently Hair Loss Awareness Month, which is a subject near and dear to my heart. I don't have hair loss, but I've had boyfriends who did, and I've seen how it can affect them, their self-esteem, their confidence, etc. Similar to guys who are short, I will shout this from the hills…I do not care. You could have John Travolta's glorious hair from his younger days, or his bald head from today that he covers with a wig. John Wayne, my childhood hero, had a toupee. You do not need to have a full, thick head of hair to be attractive, manly, or look young. As for hairpieces, I've never known anyone who used them, but I would say do whatever makes you happiest. But never do it for anyone else. And you would never have to do it for me.

    What August holidays catch your eye?

  • August 2, National ice cream sandwich day! I'll definitely celebrate that!

  • August 6, National Fresh Breath Day, and
    August 18, Bad Poetry Day

    Breath mints and reciting Vogon poetry. Does it get any better than this?!

  • 8/2:24 Happy Friyay. Today’s days are:

    National water balloon day,
    international beer day,
    national coloring book day,
    national ice cream sandwich day

  • So on the 27th I'll buy some lottery tickets and fill my gas tank. Hopefully in that order. πŸ˜†

  • I'm definitely gonna have to celebrate National Coloring Book Day a smidge late, as I was super busy, today... But rest assured, I have just the pony to color, and juuust the bright markers to do it! πŸ¦„

    @Snickerdoodle17
    I bought a friend a massive ice cream cookie awhile back; biggest one I'd ever seen! Next time I'm at the shop, I'll have to forego the cake, and give one a try.

    @TxTom
    National Fresh Breath Day, haha! So perfect for a cuddle site. Yes please, peeps - the secret is to brush your tongue! πŸ‘… Scrub that thing - you'll be amazed how clean you feel and what a difference it will make.

  • International Day Of ...... actually, d'you know what, I can't be arsed.

  • @TeddyCuddle45
    Yep, there's an International Sloth Day, just for you! πŸ¦₯

    @CuddleDuncan
    Naw, there's not a day for that, yet, but I'm sure no one would mind looping in the very lackluster celebrations with Blasé Day. 😜

    National Friendship Day is a sweet excuse to spend time with local friends...but I have to draw a line somewhere for sending out cards in the mail! πŸ“¬ πŸ˜†

    We are currently in the midst of Clutter Awareness Week. I derive great joy from watching videos on minimalism, decluttering, and organizing, so this one's right up my weird little alley. 😏

    One of my favorite concepts regarding clutter is The Silent To-Do List. Among other things, it explains why we are so at peace in a hotel, or spending a week with family, versus in our own home.

    Here's the video that introduced me to the subject, though it is initially from a book:

    Today is National Just Because Day.
    Celebrate who or what you want, how you want. Don't worry about why. (RAoK*s are a big part of the day. Why? "Just Because.")

    *Random Acts of Kindness.

    @Auroradream
    Was that one put in place after Covid? πŸ˜†

    Yesterday was National Edge Day, for the Straight Edge movement where punk rockers bucked societal norms and renounced their engagement in things such as drugs, alcohol, smoking, eating meat, casual sex, and even caffeine. These intimidating guys were tatted and pierced and performed metal-style music on-stage to screaming fans at sold-out shows, but they had a moral code more in line with conservative Christians, the Amish, etc. πŸ‘€

    When I lived in Vegas, I met several guys who were part of the Straight Edge culture. Some grew up with drinking and everything else, and adopted Straight Edge later on in their teens. Others naturally gravitated toward it because it fit what they already felt was right for them. Now, as adults, most of them are still Straight Edge. Some are not. Some still have the tattoos, the art hanging in their houses, and some still listen to nothing but punk... βœ–οΈβœ–οΈβœ–οΈ Life is fascinating.

    Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, today is World Okapi Day!!!

    I just love okapis, they're like a mix between a deer, a zebra, and a giraffe. They have the most insanely velvety coats, and I wish I could work with them at a wildlife reserve or someplace.

    Today is also National No Beard Day, gentleman. Personally, I've never liked beards, but I think a two-day scruff is divine...

    Anyone planning on shaving their wild whiskers?

  • I'm on board with
    No Drugs
    No Alcohol
    No Tobacco
    No Beards

  • Happy National New Friends Day!
    Happy Sweetest Day!
    I vow to make a friend today offline and do something nice for someone for sweetest day. I will be the sweetest me I can be today!

  • I have a strong moral code, I don’t eat my food β€˜s food because that just seems wrong on so many levels /s.

    Seriously though, I don’t need drugs, alcohol or tobacco. I used to drink VERY moderately but I have given that up completely and don’t miss it in the least.

    I had not heard of straight edge culture before. I am genuinely happy for them that they found / established a code they embrace and identify with but I personally do not consider having a beard and eating meat as moral issues. A few months ago my beard was long enough I could have put on a wide brimmed, black felt hat and easily been mistaken as Amish (don’t ask how I know πŸ˜‚).

    I’ve since gone back to my short, well groomed beard that most of my cuddle partners from here have seen.

  • Today is Sweetest Day, which has turned into another (overrated) Valentine's Day but without the holiday candy.

  • I've never had Okapi. Are they good eatin'?

    Saw this thread so I looked up today. Apparently it’s not claimed yet so act fast if you want it! Not many days left unclaimed per the website. πŸ˜€

    https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/

    Edit: nope, I was wrong. Just saw that @SunsetSnuggles posted a link to another website and it’s more comprehensive. Apparently among many others today is National Absurdity Day. Wonder if Albert Camus would have been proud or appalled? πŸ˜‡πŸ€£

  • Yes, thank goodness National Absurdity Day is behind us and that National Gingerbread Cookie Day has arrived!

  • Happy International Women's Day
