NYE Loneliness?

With everyone going out and celebrating the new year, can holidays make someone feel more alone and isolated than normal?

  • Yes, a thousand times yes. 💔
Once upon a December things were joyful. Now, this entire month kicks my butt.
    It's almost over. We're almost there 🫂

  • Any holiday that's supposed to be about people getting together can do that. Especially if the holiday is about forced cheer.

  • I'll blame the whole commercialization of the holidays. For the most part I have usually stayed home (a couple parties when I was younger) or when I worked in restaurants being forced to work them. Now I avoid them. As a semi-retired bartender, I call them amateur night. People end up over indulging as much as I may have tried to prevent. Never mind the whole midnight kiss

I haven't been out on NYE since 1984, so used to staying in.

  • Why do this faithfully every year if its a struggle? And are things really starting fresh? Do we need fresh starts? I appreciate that most people dont have to go to work. Besides that im struggling to understand why are we yelling and shooting guns and setting off fireworks and out after midnight?
I got your back on this one granny!!

  • @UglyDuckling No one here has declared that there must be NYE parties.

@UglyDuckling Because people like to hold on to hope that the new year will be better than the old. Or you can just see it as celebrating surviving another year.

  • @maidensamia It doesn’t have to be lonely, but that’s a real risk if you’re not into the common celebration of it.

I’m not really into the parties and mass celebrations.

I typically take it for what it is, a nice day off.

But I do appreciate the cycle of it; I can appreciate that without getting subsumed into other people’s expectations for it. I admit I do get a little introspective about past years, and and do evaluate if there is anything I want to experience or do differently in the coming year.

Being alone with my thoughts is a welcome thing.

  • You can make it as fun or as sad as you want. Choose to make it a happy one. :-) there are some that will just be miserable no matter what don’t let that be you! Join a volunteer organization that’s in your neighborhood and you can make connections that way! :-) Here’s to 2025! Make it a great one!

  • @Ironman294 Yup, people who suffer from depression and isolation or who have had bad things happen can choose to just enjoy it. /sarcasm

  • @ironman has a very valid point...its a new year, life is meant to be enjoyed, noone is forcing you to have fun..we don't live in a facist society..there is freedom of choice. There is freedom of choice. Mark the new year with joy..after all you all are alive..soon the birds will be chirping! If paralyzed vets can find positive purpose in their lives then so we can all. Happy New Years day to all!

  • So its is a healthy or unhealthy outlook on 1 pivotal day of the year. Hmm. To each their own

  • I choose to have mac & cheese for dinner tonight. And to be kind, compassionate, and supportive of those who are or soon will be living under the yoke of tyranny. And to continue fighting for this to be a free society.

    My path is clear. :)

Others are free to choose more traditional paths if they so desire.

  • My experience is people tend to avoid miserable people..there is always time to change and lead a more positive life..traditional values including one's associated with family and friends could help

  • traditional values including one's associated with family and friends could help

I know I'll get nowhere if I ask what these are.

But I always encourage people to find support amongst their friends, especially when their families have toxic traditional values. Many a person, especially LGBT people, have found much happiness in cutting all ties with their families. Their friends become their chosen families. Everyone deserves a fresh start and a chance at happiness.

New Year’s Eve is an absurdly perfect human tradition.

    Make stuff up? Check!

Pretend that’s it’s totally normal? Check.

Get drunk and shout together at inanimate objects? Check!

Some of us die from drunken misadventures? Check!

Some of us are assaulted, and worse, by drunken, emotionally charged people? Check!

January and December simply have better marketing than the other months…

@dennis22554 some have advised to fake it until you make it. That has worked for me and many people. I wish the states were more traditional like Japan and Korea. People there are so much more polite and orderly. Basically no crime, no shoplifting. Women can walk around and not be harassed by men unless it’s a bar where alcohol is involved.
Public transport is quiet and people get up in buses and trains for elderly passengers. We used to be that way here but unfortunately there are people who think that’s too normal bad. I’m my trip to Japan and Korea last year was amazing. We should strive for that kind of society. And Hapoy New Year to everyone! 🎉🥳🎊

  • I am a social worker . I have all of my documentation and other people's burdens, so I am never lonely.

  • @pmvines I don't know if all your clients are having a good NYE, but I think we can be confident that their NYE is better because of you.

  • @IronLemon
That's very kind of thanks ! The world is better with you in it my friend

  • It can be very lonely but even when I’m asked to join friends i like to stay in.

I use New Year’s Eve and New years day for self reflection and for meditation. I journal about what I’m grateful for this past year and about my hopes and desires for the coming year. I wrote about what I would like to make better and what I’d like to leave behind. I show the people closest to me how grateful I am for them with a short note.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

  • It’s been that way for me since last year. Especially since my immediate family has passed.
