Time Out? What is this?

I was messaging with someone. And I came back on tonight it is says "time out" on his account. When I opened it up, it says banned. I know what banned means, but what does time out mean?
Does that mean he is on a time out or our discussion on a time out? Anyone know?
I've been on here for years and never seen that before.
Thanks!

  • I think it’s usually something that the mods do to basically keep them on hold while discussing what to do with them based on an issue they found. That’s my guess.

  • It’s literally a time out, like a child. They told him how long. And he should be back

  • @ThetaKitty thanks for explaining it. I've asked a member who was on time out, I've asked admin in a separate email and on another thread. I was beginning to think I'd imagined it! Lol

So paused is when they are investigating (I found that one) and time out us when they think the person needs a cool down period. 👍

  • I was in a forum timeout following the election but really who can blame me for wanting to punch a dolphin in the face

  • @pmvines Dolphin is the wrong animal to want to punch.

  • @pmvines really? Am I one of the chosen few who somehow has made it thru the gauntlet? Hehe.

  • Hmmm perhaps. Did you get a free toaster in the mail ?

  • People are timed out for various reasons, most of the time it’s never because they’re outstanding citizens. If people are on a forum timeout, I think they can still use other areas of the site. If you click on someone’s name and it says timeout, I think they are unable to access any areas of the site. I know of a couple pros recently who were timed out because their credit card on file had expired.

  • @pmvines To be fair, dolphins are awful. 🤷🏼

@Runawaycuddles To be fair, everything is awful.

  • Is there a reason it would say “banned” in the conversation portion instead of “time out” the way it does next to the name? That’s something I’ve been trying to figure out, especially since I delete banned members from my conversation areas. I’ve seen this happen to a few people, some new, others not so new.

  • When your credit card on file needs to be updated, it is a pause, not a timeout.

  • A Timeout usually happens when someone is being an a$$hole on the message board, or otherwise breaking rules of board conduct. Yes, it is a cool-off period. Oftentimes if two users get into a fight, they will both be put on Timeout, and sometimes the mods will block them from each other (though that usually happens organically, bahaha).

    Sadly, this is true. 😔

People who are on Timeout can be listed as Banned, because the site doesn't seem to have made a proper category for this. It has caused an uproar on a few occasions, as people who simply got put on Timeout for something on the forum, were thought to be banned, and banning most often means sexual misconduct. They should really fix that verbiage.

There is another option mods use, and that is a gag order between fighting parties. If either party engages, baits, tags, messages, or initiates contact, they're banned.

Prior to being a mod, I was given a gag order because we regularly antagonized each other and disrupted the boards. Did we earn the gag order? Absolutely. Was I an a$$hole about it? Absolutely. Was I wrong about the other person? Absolutely. Fast forward, I've even met him and we were mutually surprised at each other in a positive way. He's cool AF.

Time outs are easy, but sometimes when antagonists won't chill TF out, then a gag order is warranted.

  • @Sideon 👍 Glad you and @sillysassy could patch things up.

  • I think he put his own account on a pause. I think he did it in his settings

  • This was just recently brought up I believe. It happened to someone else recently. A timeout and band. I believe one of the mods said they get a time out to investigate. Then if needed, they ban the person.

So I believe with the banning, they are not coming back

  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate this.
