CC Book Club πŸ“š

edited June 30 in General

The topic has been discussed previously, but no action was taken, and I was just reminded of it by @sillysassy πŸ™

(My current everyday bag 😁)

Who would be interested in participating in a CC book club?

Books would be voted on & chosen for topics related to platonic cuddling, such as:

  • setting & negotiating boundaries
  • consent
  • non-violent communication
  • self-therapy
  • love languages
  • attachment theory
  • science behind touch
  • history of healing modalities
  • sensory processing & somatics
  • books by cuddlers!
  • and more - very open to suggestions!

I'm currently envisioning 1 book a month, and then offering to host virtual discussions. I'm open to suggestions on timing and spacing - I tend towards flexibility and accessibility (i.e. no hard deadlines, offering multiple days/times, choosing affordable or freely available books, etc.)

If you'd be interested in participating, have book requests, or any other suggestions - comment below!

Alright folks, let's do this thing!

1) I'm setting us up to start reading July 1st (though you can start reading sooner!)

2) Click here to vote on books and meeting times! This form will close at 12am PT / 3am ET / 7am GMT on Saturday, June 27th. If you miss the deadline to vote, you're still welcome to join us! πŸ€—

3) On Saturday, June 27th around 12pm PT I'll post here in this thread:

  • the winning book selection
  • some places where you can purchase or borrow the book
  • the weekly meeting times for the month (you can attend as many or few as you wish)

4) I'm tentatively scheduling the final meeting for the last Saturday of the month: Saturday, July 25th at 3pm PT / 6pm ET / 10pm GMT. This will also be the deadline for August's poll.

5) All meetings currently planned to be hosted on Google Meet - no login required. I will send out links after 6/27 when the poll closes.

I think that covers everything, but please let me know if I missed something or you have questions!

  • I'm interested, would have to think about book suggestions cause i can't come up with any off the top of my head.

  • Books off the top of my head that would be great to explore:

    • The Art of Receiving and Giving: The Wheel of Consent, by Betty Martin and Robyn Dalzen
    • Speaking from the Heart: 18 Languages for Modern Love, by Anne Hodder-Shipp
    • The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, by Bessel van der Kolk
    • Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion, by Marshall Rosenberg
    • Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment, by Amir Levine & Rachel Heller
    • Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make - and Keep - Friends, by Marisa G. Franco
    • Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma, by Peter Levine
    • I Hear You: The Surprisingly Simple Skill Behind Extraordinary Relationships, by Michael Sorensen
  • I'm interested. Love that book selection!

  • I'm not sure if I'd get through books quick enough as I admittedly don't read a book everyday (though I will read other things such as articles every day) or when I do read a book it's not always the same one so I feel like I have started several but finishing one can be a challenge to me. Still this does sound interesting and I have to thank @cuddlefaery for informing me of Nonviolent Communication. I picked up the audiobook CD from my local public library and ripped the tracks so I could listen to it in my car while driving. 😊

  • I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do the Modern Love Language book Speaking From the Heart by Anne Holder Shipp (and I think it would be a great opportunities to explore more nuanced ideas and perspectives.)

I think it’s a brilliant idea and we could have a thread dedicated to each book specifically maybe.

I think it is incredibly kind for you to offer to host a virtual space and discussion for that as well.

    What a beautiful idea.

  • highly recommend "Your Resonant Self" by Sarah Peyton.. has some crossover with NVC (nonviolent communication).

which.. this forum could use some NVC hahahah

I want an in person cuddle meetup for the book "Hospicing Modernity".. about how modern life will die either painfully or easefully as we run out of ways to exploit our planet for the exponential-profit-driven shareholders.

I read the book and it slayed but I need to read it while cuddling to take it all in.

  • I’m down for a book club!!!

  • Count me in πŸ€“

  • I have a hard time reading. I've never been able to retain the info easily. In school I had to read multiple times over because I would read something and then not.be able to answer questions about it. I also have crap vision these days. So as much as I have enjoyed reading over the years it can get annoying.

  • I would like to try. Lately I’ve done more articles and similar on line. I had stopped reading for a long while. I had a bad experience with it you can say

  • @pmvines fwiw, I'd try to pick books which have audiobook versions if that works better for you. I sometimes will read along with an audiobook to keep me focused.

  • @cuddlefaery

Yes that's true. I do find my attention span works better with podcasts and YouTube vids. Audiobooks are nice for when I have more consecutive time and attention to dedicate though.

  • @pmvines me too! don’t worry. We’ll sit at the back of the class and get the cliffs notes. πŸ˜‚

  • I feel a little uncultured when I tell people that I don't really read, but thats ok. Doom scrolling is fun .

  • Not being a big hobby reader isn't a bad thing or uncultured - not unless my general lack of interest and knowledge of sports is equally uncultured πŸ˜…

Everyone has different interests and strengths. It's not a bad thing to lean into what you enjoy, nor is it bad to challenge yourself now and then. I try to go to live sport events about once a year 😁

  • @pmvines You are not uncultured, you are self aware and that in and of itself is cultured and often lacking in many who claim to be cultured.

  • edited June 10

Cultured like a microscopic bacteria yo

  • Love reading! I’d be interested, currently reading the body keeps score

  • Here’s a compromise:

  • I'm down for that sounds interesting I mean I have the money to buy the book but maybe I can read a summary on it and still try to participate LOL

  • This sounds amazing! I’m in πŸ™‚

  • Nonviolent communication is a great book for everyone, either single or in relationship. It opens up some doors to look at things from a different angle and it works. Highly recommend. Another books that I read and it changed my perspective I would recommend is "the power of now" , opening up (polyamory book, but has so much thinking material for us all) and the girl that runs with wolves. Great idea for the book club for lucky ones that have time to read extra (I'm in school and have too many text books to read for a while) - though I'm trying to find some time for pleasure reading and my last two are "the long goodbye" and practical one by Evy Poumpourus "Becoming Bulletproof" - enjoy.

I'm going to be out of cell service this weekend, so wanted to post a reminder: I'll be closing the book poll for July at 12am PDT Saturday, June 27th.

Voting isn't required to participate, but if you want to have a say in book selection and/or meeting times, please fill it out!

I'm excited to have more formalized reading in my life again ☺️

  • Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg
Another vote for this one! It’s short and compact, and Dr Rosenberg has an incredible track record in helping people on opposing sides come to satisfactory solutions and good feelings, sometimes on the opposite sides of blood feuds.

  • Reminder: the poll to vote on which book we read for July and what times I'll host meetings closes tonight at midnight PDT.

If you'd like to help us pick, click here & fill out the form.

I'll post the results tomorrow afternoon πŸ™‚

  • And the book for July is...

The Art of Receiving and Giving: The Wheel of Consent, by Betty Martin and Robyn Dalzen!

πŸ“– Where to get the book (click to expand)

Also check your local library (some offer free ebook/audiobook access through apps like Libby, Hoopla, or similar), Buy Nothing groups, and local bookstores!

I'll be DMing Google Meet invite links to those who've indicated interest, as well as emailing calendar invites to those who provided email addresses. Book Club participants are welcome to join as many meetings as they wish, but none are required. This is a low pressure group, just to gather and discuss the book and how it relates to our cuddling. While these are video calls, you are not required to talk, be on video, or even text chat unless you wish to. I'll be asking participants to agree to behavior expectations when joining each meeting.

  • Thank you @cuddlefaery for navigating this on behalf of the community!
What a great book choice. πŸ˜ŠπŸŒΌβ˜€οΈ

  • I would so, so love to be a member of CC Book Club! I am having dental surgery on the 17th (which I am terrified of), so will be out of action for a few days after that, however, whatever the next book is, count me in <3 Great suggestion!
