What height do you consider to be tall?

I guess this is all relative. What do you think is tall for a man and what is tall for a woman? And then what is super tall or even too tall. And all the same questions for short. I want to know how you feel about your height.

What is your prefect height for a cuddle buddy?

I think we probably don’t want to admit it, but height can play a huge role in our friendships/relationships. I’d really like to hear your thoughts, especially the thoughts of shorter men or taller women. And this doesn’t have to be in relation to cuddling only. I would also be very interested in hearing from little people. I can’t even imagine their challenges. I’m asking this to better understand how people feel about themselves and their relationships. Please don’t judge too harshly.

  • Well at 5'8 I'm the runt in my family (not counting the actual little person) everyone else is 6'2 and up and my aunt was 7' of Amazon so my perception might be a little skewed here. But 6'8 is tall to me, I don't really care about how short someone is though tiny people are so cute!!! Ahem carry on netizens.

  • Females - 5’7 & up

    Guys - 6’0 & up

As far as the perfect cuddle buddy, I don’t mind how tall or short she is

    I’m 5’7

  • I think average height for a female in the US is 5’4” and for men is 5’9”

  • I never thought of a female at the height of 5’7” as tall. I’m very happy I asked.

Anybody taller than me seems tall to me. Anybody shorter than me seems short. When cuddling, pretty much all heights work just fine. In fact, I've never met anyone too tall or too short to cuddle properly. In other situations....

Well, I'm short for a German-descended dude. Stuff's about the right height for me in Asia, but in the States it's really handy to have somebody taller around, you know? For higher shelves.

  • My son is 20 and 6ft 2 so he stands over me by 3 inches. He has 3 half brothers that his mother had with other men both prior to our relationship as well as after ours ended . His two older brothers are 5ft 8 and the other 6 ft 5! But his younger bro who is 16 going on 17 ? 6 ft 9!!!! 4 inches shorter than shaq and two inches taller than his dad who is already a giant at 6 ft 7 !

I'm 6'1" and my wife is 4'10", so yeh ... doesn't matter to me.

I’d consider a woman over 5’6” tall, though I have met one as tall as 6’2” as recently as 2012. For a dude to be taller than average in my eyes he has to be 6’+.

My height has varied throughout my life. My record was 6’1” when I was 16. Depending on who’s measuring me and how accurate they are I might be as short as 5’9” or as tall as 5’11”. I’d rather measure myself metrically as averaging somewhere between 172-178cm. Scientists including doctors and nurses use metric measurements on the job.

As long as I’m not bending very visibly to hug my cuddle partner while standing, her height doesn’t matter to me at all.

  • I guess size does matter. ;)

  • [Deleted User]verona (deleted user)

I am 5’9” I don’t pay attention to the hight of my partners but I have had men be intimidated by be and that makes me laugh because I don’t look at things like that but I am becoming more aware that people do.

  • Being under 5 feet tall, anyone over 5’7 is considered unnecessarily tall to me hahah but seriously, please donate some of that height to me. Thanks !

  • What is your prefect height for a cuddle buddy?

It doesn't matter. I've cuddled or canoodled with all heights from about 5' to just over 6' (I'm 5'9") and it's just not a thing.

However, I have been repeatedly shocked by how much people care about the heights of prospective romantic partners. It's clearly a big deal for a lot of people, which goes a long way to explain why the divorce rate is so high.

I found stats to the effect that US males are 5'10" on average, and females 5'4.5". Apparentely the standard deviation is about 5.5% of the average, and if we take one standard deviation as being 'slightly' tall or short, and two standard deviations as being 'genuinely' tall or short, we reach the following numbers.

Just over two thirds of the population lie between the 'ish' figures, and 95% are between the Tall and Small figures.

    Female
    Tall 5'11.5"
    Tallish 5'8"
    Average 5'4.5"
    Smallish 5'1"
    Small 4'9.5"

    Male
    Tall 6'6"
    Tallish 6'2"
    Average 5'10"
    Smallish 5'6"
    Small 5'2"

Figures for other nations may be significantly different. Americans are tall by global standards.

I am always shocked when I am told I am tall and I am just 6 ft tall. So I think people have a low bar (pun absolutely intended) for what is considered tall.

  • edited December 2020

I don't think I notice anything much under 185cm or so as being tall. I think that applies to both males and females, from what I have noticed sex makes no difference as to what I consider tall.

For reference I am 178cm so a lot of my noticing of people I consider tall is likely due to my own height.

  • I passed by a guy who was 7'6". I'm 5'8" and that's a HUGE difference. I later heard that a female friend of mine got a pic with him. She's 4'10"!

  • I stopped to help a couple with a flat tire on the interstate. After the spare was put on, the lady tried to pay. I told her that I stopped to help because I've been in their shoes and besides they would need the money for a new tire. Then the guy tried to get me to take the money but I told them no thanks. I told them that the best thanks would be a hug from a 6 ft 6 in basketball player (her), but she would have to get on her knees. She got on her knees and gave me a 5 second hug. He came over and did the same. He was 6 ft 8 in. Best thanks ever. As far as height when cuddling, who cares.

  • Who cares in terms of cuddling here too, though they are different experiences. Because I am often the "big one" emotionally, it's just nice to be dwarfed physically sometimes. Ahhhh, to be the one being held instead of the one holding, and to be dwarfed has an extra nice aspect to it in that regard. That said, there are so many factors in what makes a satisfying cuddle and there's something about being dwarfed, dwarfing, and matching that are all good and different flavors. I sometimes feel bad for super big guys who never get to feel scooped up by anyone. I imagine there are ways to create that even if it's not the height that creates it.

I come from a line of super tall people up a few generations (6'5" and 6' women). Generally 6' and above is tall to me regardless of gender. I used to be tall for a woman (almost 5'8") but these days, whoa... my daughter is almost 6' and when she and her 6' dad are around, I feel like shorty. That's a sweet feeling actually as I've never thought of myself as small.

I like my height. If I were to be offered to move in one direction or another, I'd prefer to have another 2-3 inches, probably purely for basketball purposes. Sometimes I wear clogs when I'm with my daughter that jack my height up a couple inches and there's a cool feeling being "big women" together.

  • @verona

but I have had men be intimidated by be and that makes me laugh

    Of course they were.
The general online dating consensus is that majority of females has a cut-off height for the man at 6'

Which is something men have zero control over (unlike, say, weight).

Understand, please, that I am not complaining here. I, myself, stand tall at 6'3", so this doesn't apply to me, at all as it's statistically almost impossible for me to meet a woman taller than 6'3"

  • The average man is approximately 5’10” and woman 5’4”. I am 6’4” and many people call me tall!

  • [Deleted User]Ennea2HugU (deleted user)

I agree with @littermate when it comes to cuddling.
I have been 5'10" since I was in middle school and have been called a "big" girl/woman forever. (I hate that term). In high school I figured I would want to date someone taller so that I could feel more feminine, dainty, and taken care of. (I unfortunate dealt with a few cases of shortmen's desease, which added to the feeling that I needed to be smaller in order for someone to want to care and love me rather than be antogonistic with me). I have come to realize that choices and attitude (both my own and my partner's) have a lot more to do with how I feel than their or my hight.

  • [Deleted User]tjalex (deleted user)

I considered myself on the tall side (6' 1) until I got in an elevator with some of the girls from my college basketball team. It's like anything... intelligence, looks, personality, age, etc...just depends on the group of people you're with.

  • I really like reading all your thoughts on height. And Duncan, excellent post again! I also really appreciated hearing from the women who are tall saying that it feels nice to be the one being held. Good job on letting us guys know that littermate!

  • You bet @ChibiShema. I'm an open book. I'll let you know anything you want to know, almost.

  • You can probably tell from my name that height is a big part of my identity. I'm 5'11" and have always been tall. Hated it in middle school but by high school i could easily order drinks in a bar, which also has a lot to do with an attitude and confidence. Now I love my height for a lot of reasons, and just last week I no joke reached a box of crackers on a high shelf for a woman in the supermarket. It's my obligation, as one vertically gifted.

My older daughter is 5'10" and mad she didn't beat me in height (she's very competitive). Younger daughter hit 5'6", said well that's enough to be a pilot, and got herself a 6'6" boyfriend.

For cuddling, I have no height requirements. I like cuddling all shapes and sizes of people.

Romantically, I have dated from 5'7" to 6'9". I am definitely drawn to a physical type, but energy and personality is what really draws me in.

Too consider a man "tall," I think he's gotta be about 6'2"+. Women, 5'9"+

Drawback: last time I put on an amazing pair of platform shoes, my daughter told me I was "drag queen tall" ( not really the effect I was going for)

Least favorite line, and one I hear really a lot: "We're all the same height in bed"
Um, no. No we are not. Just saying

  • @littermate YES to being the big one emotionally. Plus as a tall woman don't you find people turn to you more to solve problems or do things? Like height carries with it an inherent capability or authority.

It's nice to put all that away sometimes and melt into a pair of big strong arms.

  • It is all relative but as I am only 5'6 I will go with 6 feet.

  • @SixFootRedhead I'm not that tall honestly, but I am solid in the "doesn't freak out in the face of ANYTHING" and so people lean into me that way. I've not really felt that tall since high school... I feel average these days... but I'm betting that's a phenomenon. I'm with you though, however it is we're used to being the "big one" it's so awesome to be the one that's surrounded somehow. Ahhhhh.

  • edited December 2020

I love hearing from the tall women! @littermate @SixFootRedhead thank you! I have always been insecure about being a short man. I think it is hard to be a short man or a tall woman when it comes to friendships and relationships. I honestly wish that I was 6 foot 2 inches tall. I guess we don’t always get what we want. And I agree with you, Miss redhead, we are not all the same height laying down. We can cuddle all different heights and sizes and shapes… But there are just certain needs I can’t need for taller ladies. I tend to find that women want to feel held and protected. As men want that too, But it doesn’t seem to the same degree.

  • How do the rest of you all short men feel? I feel completely inferior. I feel like I can’t provide the emotional support a woman needs. I’m extremely insecure.

  • [Deleted User]DarrenWalker (deleted user)

@ChibiShema: Well, I'm short. And I am absolutely terrible at providing pretty much anyone with the emotional support they need.

Not because I'm short, though. No, emotional support doesn't generally require height.

Nope, I suck at emotionally supporting people because I see things in ways most people find unpleasant and I don't typically lie... so unless the emotional support required involves complete silence, I can't do it.

Nothing to do with how hilariously short I am at all.
