@Shake honestly they probably stole your friend’s laptop. There’s tons of exposés and deep dives where they’ve found that overwhelmingly, cops steal items from what they confiscate, for personal use. It’s rampant and unchecked because the police unions fight so hard against third party oversight. If they weren’t doing anything wrong, they wouldn’t mind a little oversight…

@SunsetSnuggles I learned the hard way that I'm easy to net stalk because of having a unique name and profession. Add to that how much info is under public domain and so unable to be removed from Internet searches, and the best one can do is control what is shared where. Short of never interacting on the Internet or remaining completely anonymous and never sharing any personal details ever, learning how to utilize the tools available and think like the stalkers has gone a long way.

@Morpheus all pms are private, but mods are permitted to see those messages if a member(pro or enthusiast) is reported. We cannot actively look at someone's private conversations unless there is a report active. It's never been outright said, but I always took it as a smart way to supervise & limit moderators from abusing power.

Fair enough and I didn’t ask because I’m out there saying stuff to people that I shouldn’t, I’m just an extremely private person when it comes to one on one conversations. I don’t even like being around anyone when I’m talking on the phone.
@Morpheus I'm similar, and it deeply bothered me when I first realized how the site worked in this regard, because PM's on any other platform have always truly been "private" as far as I'm aware, so it felt unethical.
However, as long as one is following the rules, they should have nothing to worry about, and frankly, my reports opening up someone's PM's have led to some creepy people being removed for activity beyond what I was even privy to, so it is a valuable resource.
As far as our emotional privacy, I've accepted that the mods very likely lack the time or desire to read through our personal conversations.
@SunsetSnuggles communications between users on most sites is viewable by admin - it has to be for legal liability purposes. The disclaimer is usually buried in the TOS which no one ever reads before hitting agree.
(Edit to add: it should be noted though that usually admin will not be reading DMs unless they have just cause - such has violation reports or subpoenas)
Usually the only platforms where DMs truly are 100% private, they'll make an effort to advertise the fact. For instance, Google is notorious for it's poor privacy policies, but alternatives like Proton make a point to advertise their encryption and privacy features.
