That's disgusting, wow. Humanity is depraved.

    @TxTom

Regarding Planet Fitness, their policy reads:

"If a serious concern or significant doubt about the bona fides of a personโ€™s transgender or nonbinary status/identity arises and which the team member can articulate, the team member shall address their concerns with the member. If discussion with the member fails to resolve the serious concern or doubt, the club may ask for external evidence of the memberโ€™s asserted gender identity. If it is confirmed that a member is acting in bad faith and improperly asserts a gender identity, they may be asked to leave and their membership may be terminated."

    https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/planet-fitness-policies

It doesn't specify what the evidence would be. But I imagine driver's license or a letter from a psychiatrist?

    @Unscented_Lemon

I feel you may be missing the point - @Mike403 is concerned about the actions of straight, biological male pervs. He's not said anything about identifying trans people, or suggesting they aren't the gender they feel.

  • @TxTom I know you have a, shall we say, different point of view on this. But "just asking questions" like this in order to discriminate does make you a transphobe.

  • @Unscented_Lemon
Yes, I do have my own point of view.

But "just asking questions" like this in order to discriminate does make you a transphobe.

No. Your premise is absolutely flawed. It just means you can't or won't answer a question. Asking a question is not an act of discrimination.

  • @SunsetSnuggles If the "solution" is to keep anyone out of the women's room where there is any doubt that they are AFAB, what's the difference?

Maybe I'm inferring too much from all the bathroom bills which do exactly that.

  • @SunsetSnuggles

So, I wonder if society starts posting TSA-like guards outside of all restrooms to perform some kind of background check?

I hope not. Wow, what a totalitarian nightmare.

  • Anyone can use any bathroom Iโ€™m in, I donโ€™t give a crapโ€ฆ. oh wait ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ’ฉ

  • @TxTom You somehow missed the "in order to discriminate" part. Was that deliberate? Are you a transphobe? I'm just asking.

  • @Unscented_Lemon I understand. Name calling is all you've got.

  • @Unscented_Lemon

You posted: "If the "solution" is to keep anyone out of the women's room where there is any doubt that they are AFAB, what's the difference?"

I didn't read the Planet Fitness policy that way at all. To me it sounds supportive of trans people by giving them a blanket pass, and is careful to include a caveat to keep bio perverts accountable.

    However...

I went to your profile and see that you are trans; as I mentioned last night, I would be delighted if a trans person stepped into this conversation, as thus far it's almost entirely been support by allies, transphobic nonsense, or comments by the curious.

Since you are trans, I will happily put forward that your opinion and knowledge on any and all of these matters holds more weight than my limited perspective as an outsider. I do still think you're reading into what Mike has said; however, I'll let you take it from here, if you wish.

Seems like some donโ€™t understand that the thread is called โ€œSupport for transgendered peopleโ€. Support does not mean questioning them, or tearing them down, or hypotheticals in bathrooms.

Name calling is all you've got.

She didnโ€™t call you anything. She merely asked if you were a transphobe and said she was just asking. In short she tore a page out of your playbook.

And I support her asking that question because she is transgendered.

  • @SunsetSnuggles @Unscented_Lemon

Maybe have separate shower and changing stalls and the rules that they must use them will apply to everyone? There is no reason why anyone should be walking around naked in locker rooms.

  • [Deleted User]natickben (deleted user)

Ah yes, the old "separate but equal" argument. ๐Ÿ™„

  • Companies like Planet Fitness has caused a huge outrage by letting trans people into the women's changing room. Any creep can say they're trans to be allowed in there

The Planet Fitness policy seems okay at first glance, unless you're unable to provide documentation, e.g. due to lack of support, inability to find or afford a therapist, living in a state where being transgender is being made illegal, etc. The issue is that their inclusive policy caused an outrage, with the second sentence being the excuse. It's usually fake pearl-clutching by transphobes, and at that, often transphobes who normally couldn't care less about women.

@TxTom Which is it? Am I name calling, and the "just asking questions" people I was referring to are being transphobic? Or is it all just asking questions?

@BoomerSpooner Thank you, you got my point exactly. Not that I think it was that subtle. One minor correction, though. Transgender (current and ongoing) rather than transgendered (happened in the past). Not mad, just pedantic. :) (I can't wait to see how TxTom accuses me of attacking you for a trivial mistake)

  • @Unscented_Lemon Thank you for letting me know. I love to know when I am incorrect because it saves me from repeating the wrong thing to people who say nothing.

  • @Unscented_Lemon

Some people who complained were other women who was uncomfortable having a person with a penis getting undressed in front of them.

  • My daughter has used Planet Fitness for 4 years and she said that whole guys coming in thing is stupid. Never seen it nor has any of her friends. She pointed out that cis guys coming into bathrooms has nothing to do with transgender people using the facility. A door has never prevented pervs from coming in and taking under stall pics. Guys coming in to womenโ€™s bathrooms to do creepy things predates the transgender argument. The argument about transgender in the locker room, in her opinion, says more about the minds of cis guys who are afraid of change and live out hypothetical scenarios in their mind where there fears are validated. I agree with her.

@BoomerSpooner - Google. There is so many sources I don't even know where to begin. The one I'm thinking about is one where Planet Fitness cancelled a woman's membership for complaining about a naked guy in the women's locker room shaving in front of her 12 year old daughter. I don't believe they cancelled her membership just for complaining. It's the fact that she took a picture which you obviously don't do in locker rooms.

complaining about a naked guy in the women's locker room shaving in front of her 12 year old daughter.

That doesnโ€™t say anything about transgender.

Even if it was a guy pretending to be transgender that is on the men who do that. You donโ€™t ban whole groups because one person that wasnโ€™t even a part of that group did something. This is pure hysteria based off one incident.

    politics are a no no

  • [Deleted User]natickben (deleted user)

Gender is literally WHO people are. Telling people they can't talking about their literal identities is a no-no.

    .

  • @SweetCuddler33 It's pretty normal for people to get bitter/salty over disagreements on here.

Hopefully we can veer this thread back to just being supportive to transgender people

  • @SweetCuddler33
The progression of this thread was entirely predictable given how so many other threads have devolved over the years. Iโ€™m just waiting for the first reference to a certain group of WWII era soldiers in Europe and their infamous leader with the funny mustache.

About a year ago, @CuddleDuncan (who lives in the UK) created a thread discussing the coronation of King Charles. It was a well written, thoughtful and informative post explaining the history and symbolism of the coronation ceremony. The VERY FIRST response on that thread was a negative comment about the Monarchy and within a few posts there were obligatory references to colonialism.

Likewise, a couple years ago on July 4, someone created a thread wishing everyone a Happy Independence Day. Within a few posts that thread turned into a list of grievances of everything the United States has ever done wrong and reasons why we shouldnโ€™t be celebrating Independence Day at all. I didnโ€™t bother looking it up but if I recall correctly that thread ended up getting locked after a couple of people were given multi-day timeouts for their inflammatory posts.
