I recently received a message from a very intelligent, and articulate female acquaintance who implied I was “very brave” for posting on CC forums. I thought the comment was a little odd given that I reserve the term “brave” for combat soldiers, fire fighters, people that climb cliffs, etc.) But given the negative comments, memes, I’ve seen on display more frequently than when I joined (only a few months ago) I thought I would at least make some recommendation. Who am I to comment –nobody important – just an old beast with compassion for others!
Individuals are bombarded by negativity, bitterness, and other unpleasant experiences everyday—in my case that was why I was so excited when I joined–maybe I am naive–but my understanding is that CC was formed for both the physical and mental health of members–it certainly has helped me! I especially like the ability of posting on CC forums–especially helpful after a stressful day –and always nice when you can make at least one other person smile. I have thick skin–maybe that's why it's easy for me to post. But I sadly learned that only a fraction of members post–many avoid the forums all together. I would like to offer a few recommendations to make CC forums more friendly for all to participate!
Avoid the Urge to Immediately Attack: I’ve noted on more than one occasion if someone posts what seems to be a “stupid”--that person immediately starts receiving fairly negative responses. The person posting may be struggling with a personal issue, may be shy, may have other internal struggles and even though the topic may not be “cool” give the poster the benefit of doubt before attacking (funny- non-mean hearted responses can still be in-bounds depending on the topic).
Flag button: The CC flag button is a wonderful protection tool and is a fantastic resource for those addressing derogatory attacks, stalking, inappropriate language, etc. But pushing the flag button because you don’t like their posting or you don’t like the poster seems juvenile –especially on an adult site. If you don’t like someone–one always has the option to avoid reading their postings. Flagging individuals for childish reasons seems to create a lot more work for the over tasked moderators.
Going off posting topic to attack another member: I’ve seen postings where it starts on a topic–then two members who know each other will start an off-topic discussion that sometimes disintegrates into personal attacks—or so it seems.
Negative derogatory memes: Please correct me if I am wrong–but I have seen, on more than one occasion, memes posted that simply are meant to be derogatory or hurtful! These postings go against the CC spirit of community and stop!
CC is a very unique and special community, especially from my perspective! Normally I am not concerned about who responds to me–but in this case especially–it would be nice to hear from others how we can make posting in CC formulas more appealing to all!
Respectfully submitted by Steve (Dennis is my middle name—I would like to change my member name to three toed sloth–so people can get a better visual picture of me–if anyone can share the instructions!).
