  • It's a breed of cow from Belgium that has a genetic disorder that causes the muscles to double in size, or something like that. They are so cool lol

  • Here in Ohio it is State Fair Time ! 😎. One tradition that we have is a life size cow made of butter. 🧈. Over 2000 lbs of it ! Mmmmmm

Given how old this thread is, people will be discussing this subject until the cows come home... 😐

That girl's eyes behind the counter are freaking me out.

She's got the whole Exorcism of Emily Rose thing going on.

  • @TxTom hilarious steak pic. I wonder what cut that is?
@TeddyCuddle45 Now I want to meet a Belgian Blue. It's neat when genes mutate in a good way.
@Sooson I'm tired of most of the lightweight threads also, but not feeling up to starting a thread. My head is baked by heat.

  • @achetocuddle I heard it referred to as the "Bevo cut."

    If you know---you know.

  • I could never be a rancher because I'd let all my cows live.

  • @HanShotFirst
Good for you! And there are certainly ranches that don't raise beef cattle, who treat them like every other pet.

  • We took the back roads home nothing but open country, fields of corn, wheat, bales of hay. And lots of cows an horses, being a country boy man closest I've felt to home in a long time.

  • "Why Love one but Eat the other?"

Because every living thing gets eaten by another living thing, eventually.

Didn't you see Avatar? The monogamous, non-vegan Na'vi thank and praise Eywa whenever they have to kill some six-legged critter. They absorb its spirit when they consume it. In that way, the entire planet is connected. Better than 5G.

You should love what you eat. Your its Last Shadow.

But, of course, it's easier if you don't name it. I think that's why ranchers don't name their livestock.

You posted: "Because every living thing gets eaten by another living thing, eventually."

That doesn't actually answer the question. It would answer why we eat animals. But not why we pick and choose, and have such strong feelings about which are okay to eat and which would be morally appalling to eat.

I think it's simply American culture. We eat cows; India protects them as sacred. Other cultures eat sheep's face, cat meat, etc. Things we would generally consider grotesque. They find it normal, because they were raised in that culture.

While I think "culture" is the answer to the question, I, personally, think we can contemplate it deeper, and go beyond how we've been raised from birth, to truly ask ourselves if there is any difference in these types of animals.

In my opinion, there is no difference between a dog and a cow...they both deserve to experience pain-free lives, and be treated with care.

We pick and choose because of cultural preferences. And there's nothing wrong with having those various preferences.

Yes, as humans, we have a moral responsibility to care and treat all animals humanely, whether they are pets or livestock.

    @TxTom @SunsetSnuggles

Both dogs and cows are domesticated animals. Cows have been bred for thousands of years to make them a good eating animal. Dogs have been bred to give them various characteristics, including the whole bond and companionship thing. Not that you can't be friends with a cow, you can, they're just not as good at it.

Also, cows are herbivores while dogs are scavengers bred from carnivores. Carnivore meat isn't usually very nice for humans to eat. So the difference is that cows were made to be eaten, and dogs weren't.

You could of course argue that that difference is irrelevant, but that's a different point.

Obviously I heartily agree that all animals should be treated with care and respect.

My grandparents raised all sorts of animals, mostly to consume (or their products like eggs and cheese and honey) themselves or sell, and I remember back in the 70s that my grandmother had this one red cow named "Bossy," who was a beloved pet and died of old age. I believe she lived about 20 years, maybe a little longer.

I'm reminded about her and my grandparents everytime I see a Bobcat with a backhoe attachment because that is what they used to dig a hole in the pasture to bury her. They put up a wooden marker, which is gone now, as are both of them. The last time I was there, I put a large stone on the grave using the old Bobcat, but that was almost 15 years ago now.

  • I'm craving a big juicy steak.
