Ways that platonic cuddling differs from dating

In light of the recent mandate for "social distancing" and the suggestions on various discussion threads on this site and others for "virtual cuddling" or "social closening", it might be useful to continue or revisit the conversation on the differences between dating and platonic cuddling.

What are some of the ways that platonic cuddling differs from regular dating?

The following are some I can think of:

  1. Intention

In dating the aim is to impress with one's best self with the intention of scoring a committed (romantic) relationship. The focus is on covering, dressing up or discounting flaws and imperfections that may be deal breakers or makers to scoring that coveted commitment.

In platonic cuddling the aim is to share oneself as one is, flaws and all with the intention of building a deeper connection. The focus is on being oneself and expressing oneself in such a way as to make others comfortable with us as we are with or around them. There is no commitment nor obligation that comes with it. It is a connection that is reflected in how we feel, how comfortable we are in conversation or general interaction with the person. It is fluid and organic. It flows with each set of individuals needs, schedules and desires. It's voluntary and free giving. You can come and go in interaction with one another as desired or preferred between the individuals. As folks are free to be themselves. The emphasis is on being vulnerable to and with each other in a respectful and life giving way.

  1. Communication

In dating communication is often frequent and obligated by intention and emotion. There is usually so much ego and emotion involved especially initially that there's enormous pressure to respond to messages and phone calls.

In platonic cuddling communication can be frequent and infrequent depending on the individuals involved and their schedules. But if done out side of a need for attention and rather a desire to connect, communication in platonic cuddling is more driven by the evolving connection between people. The desire to share based on a continuous conversation around what each person wants and needs. There's usually no obligation nor pressure by one on the other to communicate. Unless of course one person needs more attention than the other. At which point it's no longer purely platonic but something else.

  1. Function

In dating, the relationship that grows out of whatever connection is made serves a romantic purpose among other things. Sexual intercourse is often an expectation.

In platonic cuddling it's a connection with no expectations for sexual intercourse. It is just that: strictly non sexual and platonic. The purpose is social interaction on a strictly platonic level.

So what in your opinion makes platonic cuddling different from dating? What specific gestures, behaviors, emotions and so make them different?

  • I'd say it's the intention to do more than just cuddle, though some might say that a romantic attachment can also involve no more than that.

If pizzas are $5 each, or $10 for all you can eat, and I can only eat one, do I get charged $10 ?

  • @geoff1000 It all depends what's on sale and what you order. If you order 1 pizza, you pay $5. If you order all you can eat, and can only eat 1, it's $10.

Was that supposed to be a rhetorical question? I couldn't see the application to the statement.

  • I was making the point that if a person is happy to have a "romantic relationship" which involves no more than platonic cuddling, they are indistinguishable from a person who only wants platonic cuddling.

The waiter would not say that being satisfied with just one pizza, meant they must pay the higher price.

  • @geoff1000 If you ordered all you can eat (usually a buffet) then unless you're really good buds with the waiter, he's not changing your order/price because you only ate about one pizza's worth. (Don't forget the salad and the breadsticks!!)

    Answer your questions:
So what in your opinion makes platonic cuddling different from dating?

Most dating can Be exclusive between two peoples or more. While I think cuddle buddy more like open work relationship and learning to be cool with people and respectful of ideas like privacy. Outside what they are comfortable or willing share about personal lives.

    =====

What specific gestures, behaviors, emotions and so make them different?

    Behavior:

The depending individuals beliefs and experience “body language” for platonic Cuddle.
I found better to ask/request platonic touch then assume to touch someone in my opinion.
(Especially if it’s something new both people trying together.. )
    Vs.
Dating someone (that’s already agreement romantic relationships and not before/or assuming you’re in a romantic relationship)
This a bit room interpret “body language” and “go for moment” if relationship been a good length time of months with experience getting to know each other. Like you know 100% it’s okay get a hug without asking. What you think your partner needs, but I think it’s better to communicate and learn a person boundaries and preference first..
So you don’t accidentally/potentially trigger someone’s past physical trauma or emotional trauma. Not everyone on cuddlecomfort looking for physical platonic touch, but connection.

  • In my opinion the difference is what platonic cuddling lacks. The absence of sex, romance and invested time.

In dating a platonic relationship should develop into more, that’s about it. K.I.S.

  • A date is one step in possibly finding someone for an extended friendship or relationship.
A platonic cuddle is a one-off experience with no expectation of a repeat or it leading to anything else.

  • @UKGuy
So would regular platonic cuddling between two people to the exclusion of others, be dating ?

I feel we risk getting into the "how many hairs in a beard ?" question.

It seems that the real difference, to me, is in the expectation. With cuddling, I >expect< to be touched, squeezed, cuddled, and contacted, but that's all. I have no "claim" on another person; nor does he or she have any type of continuing claim on me.
In dating, there is the expectation of the relationship deepening, becoming monogamous, even obligatory--almost like a contract. There's no "contract" expectation with cuddling.
